  • @RyoutaKira After last update I am not able to load any instrument in the AUv3 version…Do I have to do something (reloading anything, etc?)

The latest update definitely broke something with AUM, I haven’t tested it in any Daws yet. When I load it in AUM there’s no presets until I remove from the channel then load it again

  • Sorry for the issue. I will fix it soon.

  • I'm sorry version 1.1.1 also has the bug. Please avoid it if you can.

It also plays conveniently midi files (in a basic way, as it relies on the ios folders, but it's super quick and efficient). However, seems that it can't play midi files when it is opened as an AUV3, for example in AUM. Did I miss something or is it the normal behaviour of the app @RyoutaKira ?

You cannot play midi files on KQ Sampei Audio Unit.
    Sorry for the late response.

    Thanks for the follow-up!

  • The version 1.1.2 has been approved for App Store. I hope that the issue has been fixed.
It is 3:00 a.m. midnight in Japan. I will sleep.

  • Amazing app! Would really love a desktop version! Any desktop plugins similar to this one ?

  • I just bought and downloaded 1.1.2 from the AppStore in the US, so it’s up for some at least.

  • @RyoutaKira I just downloaded KQ Sampei on my iPhone 11 Pro, which is up to date with its iOS, and it doesn’t seem to import any SF2s I try. It says “Error: Some files are not imported.” and nothing is added. Any tips?

    Any SF2s?
    Could you try TimGM6mb?
    https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/soundfonts-and-sfz-files#list

If you cannot, try the followings:
    1. Check the available space of the device.
    2. Enable iCloud Sync of Soundsets.
    3. Open Files.app and put SFs into the iCloud Drive/KQ Sampei/Sound Set
    4. Check if you can use them.

  • @RyoutaKira Seems it was just those I downloaded from Archive.org. I’ll give those you suggested a try! Thank you for the quick reply, and apologies for bothering you.

No problem. There are many customized Soundfont-like formats. The app supports SF2, SF3(Ogg Vorbis/Flac compressed) and DLS.

Good to know! Thank you for all your great apps, by the way!

With KQ Sampei 1.3(.1), the on-demand loading is much improved.
I can use very large soundfonts with "Load on demand" set to 2 and "Preload Size" set to 8192 without a problem on iPad mini 5.
In the previous version, click noise occurred on note-on.

In quick tests, I can load a 4GB soundfont on iPhone 5s (1GB RAM) / iPhone 6s (2GB RAM) with AUM. On iPhone 6s, it is usable. But on iPhone 5s, I hear noise.

  • Looks great. I'm going to try it out with some of my larger soundfonts (around 400 MB). I love this app.

**Sidenote: I discovered today that I can export a microtonal scale with ScaleGen to MIDI file and play it back in KQ Sampei perfectly - it reads the pitchbend information to create the tonal shifts. Really nice.

  • Does anyone have this and bs-16? Or has anyone tried both? I’ve been using bs-16 for years but I’m curious if this is any better or offers anything more now that it’s been out a while

One advantage of KQ Sampei is that it does not collect data.
The bs-16i appears to collect and analyze user data.

Also, the bs-16i without IAP produces noise if the volume is turned up too high.

Thanks I have noticed that. Especially with user SoundFonts I’ve uploaded. I think I’d rather get your app over the IAP. Thanks for chiming in, will probably grab it soon!

I wrote this in another discussion:

    • KQ Sampei supports SF3 <3
    • I can convert SF2 to SF3 using Polyphone B)
    • One of the guitars from FlameStudios exported in SF3 is only 20MB (vs 160MB in SF2) :o

Which I guess helps if your iPad only has 64GB like mine 😅

Mine is 256 yet I still only have 30 gb of storage left 😅

So that definitely helps lol. Thanks 🙏

Nice! I've got Polyphone but haven't used it yet, so I'm going to try it on a couple of my larger SoundFonts and see how it does.
I've got BS-16i and have used it a lot, and it's great but for me KQ Sampei offers a bit more in the way of features and controls.

BS-16 has been my go to for SoundFonts since its release probably which is why I’ve been reluctant to change, but Sampei seems like the next logical step up. Thanks 🙏 next time it goes on sale I think I’ll grab it. Shoulda got it before the price went up lol 😭

Sounds interesting to me because I have 64GB iPad as well.
Is there an option to have soundfonts permanently off the iPad e.g. on external SSD or USB flash drive, @RyoutaKira ?

  • @filo01
    Currently no.
But I may implement it though I don't promise.

Thank you in advance. I think it will be really useful for all of us with limited iPad internal storage.

I bought KQ Sampai some hours ago and I can say I'm really glad I did it. Thank you @RyoutaKira
There is only one thing I miss now: I would appreciate it if the folders from which I imported the sf2 files were visible in the left side list in Collections-Patches window. I have imported almost 40 small sf2 files, some of them had very similar names and It was difficult to know which one was from which folder.
EDIT: I can move two 1GB soundfont files into Active soundsets in standalone version but I can't do that in AUv3 even when I use 2 AUv3 instances. Is it a feature which I don't understand or bug?

The available memory is more limited in extensions.
Please turn on "Load on demand" if you want to use large sound sets.
You shoud set the settings on each sound set.

  • @RyoutaKira I have set Load on demand to 1 on both sound sets and it works now, thank you!
