I did it. KQ Sampei v1.4 supports external storages!

    Great news, thank you!

  • Great , thank you!

@RyoutaKira Could I ask you for brief information how the external storage should work?
From what I've tried so far, I think I have to choose between internal OR external storage and can't use them both at the same time. Is it correct? No big deal for me I'm just asking.
For everyone: External storage works even from SD card reader, kudos to @RyoutaKira !

    I forgot to mention that.
If you select an external storage option, the internal storage will become unavailable.

I didn’t think about using both at the same time.
    It might change.
I think the text is confusing. I will change the words.

  • Well, that was fast!

  • That’s a nice update. I love this app since Roland pulled support for SoundCanvas and it’s gone. (Hmm… I wonder if it’s still on my older ipad). Anyway, this is my favorite SF2/General MIDI player.

Do you prefer it over AudioLayer and BS-16? The Bismark app has been my go to but I’ve heard a lot of people say the KQ app is better and doesn’t clip or distort as easily.

    Off topic:
If you trust iMazing team, all of the deleted apps can be downloaded using iMazing for free. Once you download ipa files, you can install them into new devices.

AudioLayer cannot play General MIDI files but it’s great for pulling up a single instrument and tweaking to perfection.

BS-16i is also a great General MIDI player. I think I find KQ Sampei’s user interface to be more to my liking. I do have a tendency to buy several apps in any given category because investigating apps is a great use of my time. :^) I like those that expose their inner workings without too much pain or effort.

Thanks. Love exploring and dissecting new apps myself :)

bs-16 has been great for me so far, was just curious if I was missing out on anything huge with Sampei. Not sure if I need it right now but it seems great. The UI does look nice. Is it multi-out?

“Load as needed” is a huge advantage over bs-16i for large sound fonts when using as an AUv3. Other than Audiolayer and Auria Pro no other sound font player has this.

After initial hours I spent with KQ Sampei I have some beginner's questions and suggestions for improvement, @RyoutaKira.
First, something about new External storage feature.
I have my soundfont files in 2 folders "Soundfonts" and "Test SF" on connected SD card called "Untitled".
Would it be possible to add path of current folder to External Storage item? Something like this:

Now I would like to switch from "Soundfonts" folder to "Test SF". When I click on External Storage item, dialog (picture above) will appear. What does "... and copy overwrite" mean?

OK, then I click to "Change folder" and select "Test SF" folder and Open. After that this dialog will appear:

I assume that "Keep" means leave previous folder ("Soundfonts" in my case) as is but I have no idea why "Change folder" allows me to delete anything. Would you please explain last 3 options?

OK, so I choose "Keep" and I expect I see content of "Test SF" folder in "Inactive sound sets" category. But there is nothing:

Finally, I would like to ask to keep the highlighted Sound Set for the current patch even after reopening the dialog when I click on Patch in the main window. "All" is now preselected:

Excuse for my English I hope it is understandable.

    @filo01

First, consider that the folder used for external storage in KQ Sampei is primarily intended for exclusive use by KQ Sampei. If the specified folder does not have the name "Sound Set", KQ Sampei will create a "Sound Set" folder inside it and use that folder.

"Disable and copy overwrite" becomes "Use internal and copy overwrite" in the new version.
When you select this, the files in the external folder is copied to the internal.

I try to describe the window "What do you do with the previous folder".
"Delete": deleting the files in the previous folder.
"Move (Overwrite the new one)": Moving files in the previous folder into the new folder.
"Copy (Overwrite the new one)": Copying files in the previous folder into the new folder.

The text might be confusing. I am sorry.

Thank you for your quick response. Just FYI: I have a little bit different state on my iPad. I have no "Sound Sets" folder inside my "Untitled/Soundfonts" and I still see the contents of this folder as soundsets in KQS. But for second folder "Untitled/Test SF" I had to move my files into subfolder "Sound Set" first exactly as you descibed. Done.

    Correct thing is that:
If the specified folder does not have the case-insensitive name "SoundSet", "SoundSets", "Sound Set", "Sound Sets", "SoundFont", "SoundFonts", "Sound Font", or "Sound Fonts", KQ Sampei will create a "Sound Set" folder inside it and use that folder.

  • @RyoutaKira Completely clear now, thank you!

Sorry ... I misspoke ... it's "load on demand" not "load as needed".

Anything that plays samples has to load those samples into memory. Most apps load the entire sample set into memory. For a large sound font that can be more ram than an AUv3 can handle. AUv3's are limited in the amount of ram they can use, and I believe that is a shared amount among all instances of the same plugin. iOS doesn't provide ways for hosts to know when plugins are reaching that maximum, so it's difficult or impossible to keep plugins from crashing if they exceed the limit.

What @RyotaKira has referred to as "Load on Demand" is sometimes also called "stream from disk". I like his term better. What it means is only the samples that are expected to be needed at a particular time are loaded into memory. That lowers ram consumption. It can result in a performance hit due to the frequent need to get samples from slower "disk" storage into ram, but if done right is a huge benefit.

bs-16i will run up against AUv3 memory limits with very large sound fonts. So will KQ Sampei without Load on Demand enabled. If you're not making use of large sound fonts and aren't trying to use multiple instances, you may never see or need this feature.

There you have it! “Load as needed”. Thanks Wim. I knew I needed 3-4 SF2 Loading General MIDI player types of apps.
Did you know that iSymphonic can play General MIDI files and get most of the instruments right? It only costs $100+ to get enough packs to play Beethoven’s 5th.

Staffpad can load a general MIDI file and render the right instruments for orchestras and such too. And the new Muse libraries are free and default to the right instruments. $90 and you’re a genius orchestrator.

or $7.99 for bs-16i, which comes with a GM sound font and a midi file player.
[edit] + $2.99 IAP for added polyphony.

Okay I thought that’s what you meant but I wanted to confirm I wasn’t misunderstanding. That’s definitely another positive for Sampei. I may actually end up making it my default soundfont player for that, and a couple other reasons listed here. Thanks for clarifying!
