so sound fonts… i know very little about them? where
do you get them, where do they come from? can you make your
own on ios?
sounds cool from what i heard so far
There are many free soundfonts available. Check out Soundfonts 4U to get started. Then you can search for others. This was discussed recently in this forum, and we put together a short list of possibilities. Here is that discussion. Lots to dig into there.
You cannot make your own on iOS.
Hey @RyoutaKira Love your apps!
Right. It really wowed me. I was wanting to see the keys even bigger for more visual effect.
Literally search Google or DuckDuckGo or whatever you use for “Free sf2” or “free SoundFonts”. If looking for something specific simply add that in “free electric guitar SoundFonts” also search the forum cause lots of links have been shared talking about SoundFonts in the past. Cheers!
Here’s a few to get you going.
SoundFonts 4 you has some great ones. Pick the packs or get them all

So can this handle .sfz ? I’m getting grayed out selections with all my Samples From Mars stuff. Was hoping this would finally allow me to chunk Auria.
Don't think so. The AppStore description says sf2, sf3, and DLS. Doesn't mention sfz.
Yeah I would love SFZs here too.
+1 for SFZ, but I’m not complaining.
Hmm, totally confused by this. Can someone explain how to access the split layer mode please? Not at all obvious to my tiny brain
Each 'Part' (Top Left) has it's own key range...
...select the Part, set the midi-channel (same for all if you want layers/splits on one channel) and pick a sound and key-range.
That should do it...
Thanks @Samu . Still not quite there. When you say select a part, what do you mean exactly? I can change the midi channel from “omni” to 1,2,3 etc… but can’t change the “part” param…
Are you using the app as Standalone or AUv3?
In the AUv3 just tap on 'part' and select one, the AUv3 can only show one part at a time thus the part menu is needed.
If you're using 'Stand Alone' then each part already is shown and you just need to change the midi-channel...
The part selection works in the stand-alone too as it can only show 4 parts at once.
For those struggling with layering sounds in KQ Sampei...

You’re right I should have clarified- as AUV3. Think I’ve got it now. Thanks again @Samu 😊
That's cool. I haven't bought this yet but I like the dev's other apps that I have. Is this part layering very similar to the layering you can do in Mitosynth?
I don't remember everything about MitoSynth sorry
In KQ Sampei you just pick and choose any sound from any of the active SF2 files for the 'parts' and tweak with the available parameters.(simple filter, envelope, depth for pitch-bend effect send etc.).
You can have up-to 16-parts per AUv3 instance, key-range and midi-channel can be set per part.
As far as I've seen there's no 'velocity layering' and I don't expect that to come either but for that other apps can be used such as Midi Tools, just process the midi (Ie. filter a velocity range to a specific midi-channel) before sending it to KQ Sampei.
If you don't already have a SF2 player for iOS/iPad KQ Sampei really is a no-brainer, it will grow on you
Ah, ok. Different. In Mitosynth you can sort or morph/blend various sounds together in various ways. This one sounds like a winner too though and Mitosynth isn't AUv3 (sadly)
thx!
Nice demo. I noticed I can also assign parts to MIDI Channels as well and use
multiple generator apps on different channels.
It's such a good MIDI file player that I wish it also had MIDI output capability like BS-16i does.
I've been making do with Musk Player for my MIDI file player. It would be nice to see this added in an update.
@McD You weren't able to change part in "KQ Sampei MPE" version 1.0.
With the new version 1.0.1 it is solved.
Question: What does "Load on demand" mean?
Is it comparable to Disk Streaming like in AudioLayer or does it mean that only the selected SF2 programs are loaded?
I'm asking because the SF2 files I'd like to use in AUv3 are much larger than the device RAM.
The second one.
Internally disk streaming is implemented but it cause much pop noises (Buffer under run).
I can load Enchant!, 4GB sound font on iPad mini 5 which has 3GB RAM.
Only in standalone I can load Enchant!.
Thank you for the quick answer @RyoutaKira!
Just curious: How large is the preload buffer for each sample in disk streaming?
Just a single sample size.
Samples are divided commonly, it is OK in most cases.
This might be not disk streaming.
I wonder pop noises would be gone if I can implement fully disk streaming.
@RyoutaKira It would be cool if it was possible to have all the layers and mapping views available in the AU just like standalone.
Also it seems the AU only supports AU parameters for the first two parts only.
I guess the preload buffer would have to be at least 20..50ms to give the iOS file system the chance to deliver the samples in time even at higher polyphony.
Funfair rides come to my mind! Carouselles etc
