Does anyone here know if Reason Rack works in Ableton Live Lite 11? I tried to search but only get demos on how to use it
I'm a total noob on Ableton but I do have Reason+ (for now) and I see/hear a lot of people embrace using the rack in other DAWs. Anyway, I can't see Reason Rack but all other VSTs are there so something is not right. Sorry to ask here but if anyone knows ... :)

That's pretty nice, although Ableton set export would have meant it could have been more backwards compatible with Live 10.

    Yeah, bit disappointing that.

So can you import your own instruments from Live into Note? Hopefully yes. That's pretty crucial for me in using this.
I hope they find a way of making it more bi-directional like that if not, as I'd like to be able to jam with kits I create in Live via ipad, more than I want to create kits on my ipad I think.

  • Very cool move, Ableton. Maybe AUv3s will follow. Anyone tried if the als files of projects started in Note could be opened Bitwig and played back with all instruments correctly?

Does your op1 field show up as an audio source in the Sampler in Note when connected to your iPad/iPhone?

Yes. I don't see where you can select a source, but if I play a synth in the OP-1 F it shows up in Note's sampler. Also, you can record from Note to the tape/sampler/etc on the OP-1.

This would make it more interesting for me too.

I've asked them via Youtube so will see what they say, but I'm guessing not as they aren't saying this in the any of the descriptions. I hope they enable this as it would be a great workflow, one way only is a bit meh....

  • Getting samples in is easy enough copy in via files app. The app has automation. Hoping Notation and Ableton will provide Launchpad support with midi in.

  • That’s a no from me..until AUv3 🤷🏾‍♂️

@Better_w_headphone Works in landscape and portrait, and in split view, which means you can use it alongside Koala!

AUM+Ableton Note is going to be a power house.

I’m going to record loops in AUM and import them to Note and call it a day on the desktop. 😜

Very interested in seeing this workflow!

  • "Live Sets and devices cannot be transferred into Note"

    Boo, meh

So, I tested it myself. Basically same as with other Ableton projects. The problem is that the device chains sound different. Bitwig does its best to substitute the Ableton device chains. Drumracks contain the same samples for instance, but it still sounds different. The SAmpler tracks are fairly the same. Worst are the tracks with the Wavetable device as it is substituted with Bitwig's Polymer and doesn't even use the correct wavetable.

Also other problems occurred now, probably because of the newer als file format of Live 11. For example the clips, scenes and tracks had no name. With older als files that was correct.

Bottom line: as a Bitwig user it works to capture sketches with Ableton Note on the go but still Korg Gadget is the better sketchpad as it sounds really identical after import into Bitwig (if you own the Gadget plugin suite).

Honestly, I am afraid this is targeting the same group as Korg Gadget, Auxy, Blocks wave, Reason compact, FLStudio mobile,...
I don't think we need another walled-garden, dumbed-down, "beat-making", "ideas-sketchpad" app. There's ton of such apps on app store.
What we need is serious production tool that get's all the potential out of AUv3, that has a serious file management, serious time-stretching (and talking about Ableton - serious warping feature), ideally some semi-modular system behind (Bitwig or Drambo-inspired) etc...
Of course, this is the toughest part. But honestly, without that, iOS will never be a serious production tool.
We need more apps like AUM, Cubasis, Drambo, maybe even Beatmaker 3 (with is still unbeaten in sample-editing features) etc. But not another toy app. Remember the fail of Propellerheads with Reason. Currently, anyone can make a simple app like that. But going deeper requires more serious approach.

I am still hoping for the return of a serious headphone jack. Seriously.

  • Wish they would have asked actual users of the platform what they want (auv3).

I think iOS musicians are not the target group. It's Ableton users that want to jam on the go.

  • I doubt they will ever support Auv3 as it won't be compatible with Windows and then they could also release an Android version of Note etc

Concur. As a non-Ableton user, I can’t see any particular reason to get excited about this.

  • Sampling is absurdly easy in a drum rack.

Tap a pad, tap the mic to sample, play a sound, tap the next pad, play another sound, etc. It auto trims the start of each sample. Adjust and trim by dragging and pinching, swipe up/down to adjust clip gain.

Almost as good as Koala. Almost.

  • Never used Ableton Live and am happy with desktop Maschine etc etc but dayum this is smoooooth and intuitive. Wish it was around five years ago.

On the fence for this. Seems kind of basic on surface. Can do most of this with Gadget or Koala and Ableton Live Export.

Looks like an ok alternative revenue stream for Ableton. Pretty much how Groovebox was/is for Novation. It's a way for them to test another market. TBD if this will be maintained in the long run.

Likely download to see workflow but not impressed. Good to see them trying something different tho.

    Also, only 8 tracks.

Bitwig users, you can import Ableton Live sessions into Bitwig. So exporting from Koala and Gadget will work.

  • Very nice, surprisingly a lot of features in such small app. Hope it will not end just like container for IAP sample packs (like Novation Groovebox or Reason Compact) but they will add new features and eventually iPad version …

A unique feature would be the ability to record a jam from the clip launcher, into a timeline, as with the desktop version - since none of the other apps I have can do this. Even just AU functionality, so you could load it into AUM, play and record a jam into an audio file would be good, but without this (even though I'm an Ableton user and fan) it's not really giving me that much more functionality than what I already have with Gadget, Koala etc.

Price-wise it's a bargain though, and if I had Live V11 (and more disk space spare on my iPad) it'd be a no-brainer.

  • @monz0id I agree. This isn't really for most active iOS music makers but trying to be a broader app and not tied to iOS ecosystem at all. Main goal is get users to use Live on a computer.

It will 100% be an IAP sample pack impulse buy machine for sure. Something for running out the door and making a dreary commute or dull coffee break more tolerable.

If iOS in the future ever has a cross platform plugin which is supported by Windows and Ableton then it would be more likely.
