We need more apps like AUM, Cubasis, Drambo, maybe even Beatmaker 3 (with is still unbeaten in sample-editing features) etc. But not another toy app. Remember the fail of Propellerheads with Reason. Currently, anyone can make a simple app like that. But going deeper requires more serious approach.
The only thing that's unique and I like is the integration with Ableton Live. But honestly, this also shows what's the goal of this app is: funneling new users into desktop version of Live.

I like toys, the iPad is one of them. If you are serious about music you should get a computer.

    And I really liked Note!

One thing I’m missing is midi in… i would like to use my chord apps and midi keyboard with it.

+1 on the midi in, would make it much more viable with bluetooth headphones...

Yah I really dig the bars, swipe left/right and the recording system. How you can just leave it looping for a bit before committing. Is this standard sorta Ableton recording behaviour? All pretty cool to me.

Not sure I would say it’s standard behaviour, but the MIDI capture functionality is from the desktop version of Live.

  • @cokomairena said:
    Is midi in planned?

I can’t say what exactly is planned or not, NDAs and all that. But Ableton knows people want it.

  • Ableton Note into Koala.

  • I'm not a regular Live user, only using Lite on rare occasions, but also do not have koala so the sampler on it's own is useful for me. I turned down the chance to beta test this due to a possible conflict of interest with other apps I was beta testing at the time. Kinda wishing I hadn't declined that offer now !

I like it so far, the sharing between iOS devices very useful, and the immediacy of recording is great. A very usable tool. I can see me using this more and more, especially on the phone, while waiting in the queue at the chippy, or in the local shopping centre car park while waiting for the other half, safe in the knowledge I could progress any decent ideas that generates on the ipad or desktop later.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Thanks for posting. I’ll check this out later.

I am having so much fun with this. Sequence with Drambo, sample it into Note… Amazing.

how do you sample into note from drambo? through aum or audiobus?

it doesn't suppor neither, just record the note on drambo and import the file to Ableton.

Also, Ableton chosing of names is terrible, I can't speak of "note", nobody will uderstand, the same happens with "live" I think, I end up calling everything Ableton

This looks fairly mediocre in comparison to the other apps available in iOS. I feel like the Ableton branding is doing a lot work here.

It’s not an app for finishing, mixing and mastering tracks, it’s an app for starting or sketching ideas and ultimately finishing them in Ableton. Pretty much what Reason Compact is to Reason, but not being limited to only 3 tracks. If you own Ableton, especially Ableton Suite 11.2.5, you’re going to love it and appreciate it for exactly what it is. The one thing I think they dropped the ball with is not being able to use midi keyboard controllers. You can still get some great things from it but I prefer a hands on keyboard, at least when I’m using my IPad.
Yes, Ableton branding is doing a lot of work, but that doesn’t mean the app isn’t a beast in the right hands, especially if you own Ableton. If you don’t own Ableton you’re just not going to get the full advantages of this app.

  • If they add stem export I would find it useful. Odds are though that we’d never see this.

My vote for the best comment of the thread

  • You gotta love the "I like this thing, so if you don't, shut up or open another thread because this one is for the fanbois" takes. Very democratic, way to go guys. 👍

I for one really appreciate the arguments both pro and con. They make me consider aspects of this app I wouldn't otherwise think of. Thanks everyone for making good points. The ABF hive mind is usually rather brilliant.

the audio export is blazing fast tho

Im also worried they won't add stem export as it make it esasir to work with any other daw and I think this is subsidized by the big bro Ableton.

Can you open the projects on live lite?

So am i. I just record the Stems into AUM or Drambo and share those recordings with Note 😉

    Sneaky, sneaky!

If they add Push2 support I would find it useful. Odds are though that we'd never see this.

Thanks bro, could you make sure they know people would like drag and drop support for external samples too? lol

This, midi in and stem export would make it perfect for me.

Made the mistake of purchasing this. The app is weak. Basically a limited collection of synths and effects (effects which aren’t Ableton’s strong suit), and then the Simpler sampler from Live.

Absolute worst part is: The Capture function is garbage. It keeps resetting like it’s assuming you want a 1 bar clip of “funky beats like we showed you in the promo vids” every time. Want to do a slow cinematic phrase? Not gonna happen. Nothing like the capture in Live. So what good is it as a Note pad if you can’t do proper sketches?

I wasn’t expecting much, and it failed to even meet those low expectations.

Yeah...It's essentially Ableton's version of iMaschine. About 10 years late in my opinion. iPads are powerful enough nowadays to run a full version of Ableton if they really were dedicated to iOS users. It doesn't look good when established companies offer so little and the biggest feature is you get to import your little sketch into the latest version of their desktop software.

Wish they would have asked actual users of the platform what they want (auv3).

I think iOS musicians are not the target group. It's Ableton users that want to jam on the go.

+1. And I’d bet they’re a bigger group than we are. An upside is that Note may introduce some Ableton Live users to the joys of iOS musicmaking 🙂

Given that even apple doesn't really care about musicians at this point I think walled garden IAP stores, funded from marketing budgets are about as good as it will get from large established devs.

    You are right! win win!

  • The app is intended as an adjunct/companion to Live 11… Ableton seems pretty clear about that. Its a fun app for Live users to generate ideas in the go.

It isn’t meant as Live for the iPad. If people that aren’t Live users find it fun that is probably nice but not super important.

If Live users like and use it, it is likely that they’ll continue to add features as it is good for their core business/interest.

The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Reinstalled Live Light on the mac for integration with this. It works very well. You get the same editing - eight macros - as you do in the app. They’re well chosen and you can do quite a bit with them. The sounds are excellent, and there’s just enough tweakability in the sequencer.
As someone said, it’s what Reason users were hoping for from Reason Compact.
And the ableton cloud synch works very well between phone and ipad, and then to Mac for finishing and timeline stuff.
Happy user here, and tempted back towards the Live ecosystem, which I guess is the point.

The Capture process took a minute to get use to but now I’m treating it like a 1,2,4 or 8 Bar looper and it all makes sense.

It’s like the way i play into Loopy Pro. Set my clip length and play away.

Here’s hoping for Midi editing and Sample Slicing in the future 😉

Try making music on Android and you'll see what not caring about musicians really looks like.

iOS isn't perfect, but bang-for-the-buck it's probably the best platform. IAPs and apps are a fraction of desktop software prices.

This is great. If I know Ableton, this will only get better in time. Happy day for Live users 💪🏽

For me, GarageBand to Logic is unbeatable and I imagine it’ll only get better this year with new OS and devices on the way.

My backup is Zenbeats which is a 1:1 port from iOS to Desktop.

I think you’re right, and it’s a good start that I expect to see improvements to.

Zenbeats is not too bad, but I haven’t grown to like it any more than when I first got it. Perhaps Ableton will improve the app and make it as usable as Zenbeats or even overtake it.
