First time in months when I pick up my iPad to make some music.
For a 1.0, this is a heaven!!!
Good question! All of the testers of the app are Suite users, so we asked this too. As far as I understand, you'll still have access to the instrument rack (all synth sounds are in Rack format on the desktop) and I believe the 8 macros for tweaking. But like other sounds in the Live library if you don't have Suite, you won't be to open the racks to edit anything.
Just the mastered single, but you can always solo each track and export if you want them separate. The Exporting is a very fast process, doesn't take long.
That was definitely a wish some of us testers had as well. The dark background is great indoors, but working on ideas outside it can be hard to see I agree. Stay tuned!
Would be great as an Auv3/Midi..
Couple more cool things I haven't seen mentioned:
The cloud share functionality works across iOS devices too, not just to your desktop. I would often start something on my phone, and then switch to the iPad to keep adding to it once home. Or vice versa, start an idea at home on the iPad then transfer it to my iPhone to work on in a local park. This obviously includes any samples you record, and each sample can be up to 1 minute long.
You can take a picture to assign to the project file. I love this, as it lets me take a picture of where I started or mostly work on my Note projects. I take my phone all kinds of places deep in the woods to make music, I personally really like the little visual reminder of where I was when browsing my Projects.
Also, there are more features planned, including some of the things people have wished for here already. This is only 1.0, more to come. Don't honestly know if anything having to do Auv3 is coming or not, but I lobbied hard for it because I know so many of you here would want that. They definitely know there's a demand for it, FWIW.
I'm a bit miffed they haven't included V10 compatability - they could have used instruments included in V10 so it would work. Feels like a bit of an unsubtle nudge to get V10 users to upgrade.
Since the sounds have limited editing in Lite, and aren't going to be available if I then save a project in Lite, and open the project in my V10 full suite, it's not really offering anything to me that I can't already do in Gadget or Koala. Which is a shame, as I'm an avid Live user and should be part of their target audience.
for all those worried about Auv3 i get it, but Note is not for that. its literally a compact version of ableton, that you can open your projects on desktop to finish. It has a majority of abletons built in devices, including instruments and effects.
now, that being said, latest ableton does have Auv3 support, so maybe they are planning this on an update... ??
Haven’t seen these questions answered yet:
Had nothing to do with getting people to upgrade, a lot of functionality had to be added to get the Cloud syncing working smoothly. Doesn't make sense to spend so much time adding that to older versions that are already superseded.
Yes and yes. I'm a big fan of self-contained groove box style apps like Auxy, Figure, and ummm... Groovebox. So this is right up my alley, the interface is really good and I love the reliance on actually playing music and capturing it after the fact. It's a unique workflow for iOS devices I feel like, and it's very intuitive.
The sounds are great, like I said most of the synth sounds use the new Wavetable instrument. And there's a lot of the revamped Live 11 effects in it like the Redux and Reverb.
Yeah it's certainly a great beginning from Ableton so lets hope they grow it further
I don’t even have ableton but bought this to have a mess around with. I love how this captures midi as soon as you start tapping on the drum pads - this could be a great way to do midi clips in loopy @Michael
Ewwwww!
its a bit yucky
So to truly love Note i would have to install Live. Duh, I guess…
Stems export is on the feature requests.
Is the Sampler record only? Or can you import files from AudioShare or the Files app?
Edit: Looks like you can, from the Files app... Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
Have to say this is a nice surprise, solid if not spectacular. I kind of like that they went with a companion piece rather than a full fledged production app, as there would have been some redundancy if they had.
Yes you can import your own samples, via the Share Sheet to Live.
I upgraded my Live Lite and opened an .ablbundle project file shared via airdrop. The wavetable device sounds the same as in Note but all you can tweak are the macro knobs and you can save presets.
And @klangsulfat, too
I would if it didnt insist on taking up 3gigs on my c drive despite installing it on d. wtf Ableton I only have 10gb free on c!
great stuff, I rarely use the iPad for making music these days but Ableton on desktop all the time, nonetheless instabuy of course .. I can see myself sitting in the park using this too, but it's getting cold outside, so maybe next year
I'm interested as to why folks like @AudioGus and @cabo rarely use iOS to make music but still frequent and participate in AudioBus forums? We must really be an entertaining bunch!
1 in US App Store for Music.
Dang. So if you’re not using Live on Mac or PC, this app is somewhat limited, Correct?
It looks dope but I’m struggling to justify the purchase without any connectivity or even midi export. Even core/virtual midi would be dope. I barely ever use my PC.
I am still an app nerd into the workflow and GUI innovations and buy / play with them for fun (weee, cheap!) but not really with the intention of being 'productive' with the platform anymore. As for why I really come back it is totally for the culture of the forum. Haven't found any other music hobby forums that tolerate OT meandering and such. If there were a hobby Maschine forum or discord that would be cool but I have not found one that isnt just bro-y jock competitiveness.
You don’t need the Cloud to export projects, you can do it via Airdrop.
As for supporting older versions, all they need to do is mark instruments that are v11 only, and v10 users can simply avoid using them when starting a project. Better still, have an option in the preferences to select which Live version you have, and it then greys out unsupported devices.
I can’t see the above taking any more time than it has creating a whole new file system, and there’s a whole bunch of v10 users (which is still supported, and updated), who won’t buy the app.
Well it sounds good enough to make full tracks with and you can export the result as audio. I don't see it being any more limited than Auxy or Groovebox or any of the other self contained iOS apps out there.
I guess it depends on how you like to work though.
It doesn't and it won't ever work with Live 10, simple as that I'm afraid.
Oh well, makes that an easy decision for me then, I’ll stick with Koala!
Ok awesome. I’m also a fan of those things
Sorry if I’ve missed anyone mention this but my iPad purchase of Note isn’t showing in the purchases list on my iPhone and I’m just wondering if when I tap to buy it again it’ll, hopefully, say I’ve already bought it and so it’s free. The app is universal isn’t it? Cheers.
Thanks for your efforts @Tarekith .. You sure are making a case for Ableton Live for us “on the fence “types.. Really considering getting it now .
