Sorry if I’ve missed anyone mention this but my iPad purchase of Note isn’t showing in the purchases list on my iPhone and I’m just wondering if when I tap to buy it again it’ll, hopefully, say I’ve already bought it and so it’s free. The app is universal isn’t it? Cheers.

    Yes it's universal.

  • That play button with the loop indicator way down at the bottom right is a victory for left handers everywhere (of which I’m not one). Loving it otherwise, the sounds are great and it’s definitely fun.

  • I think the big news today on a purely Ableton basis is Ableton Cloud and how that will expand.

Yeah, sounds like a way to build a subscription based product.

  • If Note were an Android app, I would definitely buy it.

    Thanks @Tarekith.

  • This looks fairly mediocre in comparison to the other apps available in iOS. I feel like the Ableton branding is doing a lot work here.

  • Made the mistake of purchasing this. The app is weak. Basically a limited collection of synths and effects (effects which aren’t Ableton’s strong suit), and then the Simpler sampler from Live.

Absolute worst part is: The Capture function is garbage. It keeps resetting like it’s assuming you want a 1 bar clip of “funky beats like we showed you in the promo vids” every time. Want to do a slow cinematic phrase? Not gonna happen. Nothing like the capture in Live. So what good is it as a Note pad if you can’t do proper sketches?

I wasn’t expecting much, and it failed to even meet those low expectations.

Maybe a separate thread would be useful for the unimpressed and hard done by? Then this one can be saved for those who think it’s a useful app and something quite extraordinary for £4.99.

I’m already discovering you can edit clips in ways that weren’t immediately obvious, like any good app there’s a learning curve involved to get the best from it.

If you don’t want or like it there is no requirement to tell everybody.

I think a lot of people ragging on this app have not spent any time digging into it or even watching the Ableton video to know what it’s really capable of. I can see it making everything from basic sketches to full tracks. Sure, it has its limitations and will not be everyone’s cup of almond milk but let’s not forget it’s Version 1 on the first day of release. 🤦🏽‍♂️

    PS - it’s not limited to 1-bar clips…

  • @ipadbeatmaking : What’s yiur take ?

  • This is great.

Why?! I’m sure other people like me, who has not invested in it yet, appreciate the different takes!

Fine, here’s something useful I’ve discovered then:

First grab: double tap on the note lane to get further editing options.

Second grab: swipe right on the bar numbers to turn them yellow and duplicate (swipe left turns them red to delete).

Think the workflow is great got to be the easiest beatbox to get a beat going on very well put together once you start diving in. Remember it’s a sketch pad.

@Better_w_headphone Works in landscape and portrait, and in split view, which means you can use it alongside Koala!

AUM+Ableton Note is going to be a power house.

I’m going to record loops in AUM and import them to Note and call it a day on the desktop. 😜

Very interested in seeing this workflow!

    Me too.

  • a friend of mine works for ableton and she said please email [email protected] for any ideas for improvements etc.

  • I asked before but no-one answered - can it do time signatures other than 4/4? Can it do 3/4, 6/8, 5/4, 7/8? Ideally per clip, but at least globally?

That’s asking a lot, lol. Of course I wanna know too. Maybe I’ll email in a suggestion

  • Ableton’s 20-min video manual is worth a watch for the not-so-obvious options:

No, at the moment it's 4/4 only. Definitely something that got a few requests during testing though.

You can press and hold on an individual bar number to delete, duplicate, or crop the clip to that specific bar too.

  • Yah I really dig the bars, swipe left/right and the recording system. How you can just leave it looping for a bit before committing. Is this standard sorta Ableton recording behaviour? All pretty cool to me.

We need more apps like AUM, Cubasis, Drambo, maybe even Beatmaker 3 (with is still unbeaten in sample-editing features) etc. But not another toy app. Remember the fail of Propellerheads with Reason. Currently, anyone can make a simple app like that. But going deeper requires more serious approach.
The only thing that's unique and I like is the integration with Ableton Live. But honestly, this also shows what's the goal of this app is: funneling new users into desktop version of Live.

I like toys, the iPad is one of them. If you are serious about music you should get a computer.

    And I really liked Note!

One thing I’m missing is midi in… i would like to use my chord apps and midi keyboard with it.

Couple more cool things I haven't seen mentioned:

    • The cloud share functionality works across iOS devices too, not just to your desktop. I would often start something on my phone, and then switch to the iPad to keep adding to it once home. Or vice versa, start an idea at home on the iPad then transfer it to my iPhone to work on in a local park. This obviously includes any samples you record, and each sample can be up to 1 minute long.

    • You can take a picture to assign to the project file. I love this, as it lets me take a picture of where I started or mostly work on my Note projects. I take my phone all kinds of places deep in the woods to make music, I personally really like the little visual reminder of where I was when browsing my Projects.

Also, there are more features planned, including some of the things people have wished for here already. This is only 1.0, more to come. Don't honestly know if anything having to do Auv3 is coming or not, but I lobbied hard for it because I know so many of you here would want that. They definitely know there's a demand for it, FWIW.

    Is midi in planned?

  • Endlesss is still better.

    You lost?

  • I am having so much fun with this. Sequence with Drambo, sample it into Note… Amazing.
