Does Note have a decent landscape layout on iPad? (All the screenshots in the App Store are profile.)

    Yes

Agreed - I think it’s great. And once you know the layout it’s easy to get around.

Dang. So if you’re not using Live on Mac or PC, this app is somewhat limited, Correct?

Well it sounds good enough to make full tracks with and you can export the result as audio. I don't see it being any more limited than Auxy or Groovebox or any of the other self contained iOS apps out there.

I guess it depends on how you like to work though.

    True. Right on.

You gotta love the "I like this thing, so if you don't, shut up or open another thread because this one is for the fanbois" takes. Very democratic, way to go guys. 👍

I for one really appreciate the arguments both pro and con. They make me consider aspects of this app I wouldn't otherwise think of. Thanks everyone for making good points. The ABF hive mind is usually rather brilliant.

I’m definitely an Ableton fan boy at this point, I own Ableton 11 Suite as well as a push 2, but like any other app, this isn’t for everyone and it’s ok. I’ve bought a lot of apps that people love that just didn’t gel with me. I won’t mention said apps but there were many so called game changers that didn’t change anything for me. As far as this app goes I do think some will miss the whole point of this app. Let’s be honest, are we really expecting a full or even half full version of Ableton, that supports auv3 , has audio tracks, export stems ( although I’d like that very much also ) for like basically $6?
Personally I love almost any app that export projects as Ableton projects, I use Groovebox and Gadget into Ableton all the time but I don’t know of any IPad app that export Ableton projects and uses Auv3, but I kinda get it. Even though newer M1 Macs let’s people use Auv3, PCs don’t and I don’t see it happening anytime soon. But who knows? But again, at the end of the day every app isn’t for everyone and it’s cool.

I think we just need Note to be an auv3 option, so we can host it in AUM or Drambo so we get samples into it a lot easier ;)

That was my request at least to the Dev Team.

Being able to record jams with it too would tempt me to buy it, rather than being stuck with the current, limited, song export method.

Like Koala via AUM - you can sample in, run multiple instances, and record the resulting mess.

It’s all a bit last decade, otherwise.

Koala was rather limited as a 1.0 as well...Note will evolve. All the right pieces are there with the CORE of the app to go to great places. Right now I am just recording my sequences in Drambo and exporting the Samples to Note to integrate them into the track.

    True.

I really like this so far. I’d love to see midi and launchpad support would be really cool. More sample editing would be nice as well but it’s great at a little groovebox/sketch pad so far

Any good for ambient / experimental stuff etc? I got put off by some early comments here but am intrigued

yes and no... i made a pretty lofi weird song in it, there are some great ambient and evolving presets, but its no AUM with a plethora of granulars etc. If they ever add a timeline, instead of clips, it would probably be better suited for ambient.

Attached said weird lofi thing here. I should note i "finalized" this on ableton desktop, but really just slapped a quick master on it, didnt really tweak the session. its 90% Note

I asked before but no-one answered - can it do time signatures other than 4/4? Can it do 3/4, 6/8, 5/4, 7/8? Ideally per clip, but at least globally?

No, at the moment it's 4/4 only. Definitely something that got a few requests during testing though.

Thanks for the answer. That’s a deal breaker for me.

    Does it have Link?

Yes, but not where you would expect to find it near tempo, you have to press the … at the bottom of the sets screen.

  • @shinyisshiny trippy! @Jumpercollins thanks guys, I'll probably pass on this, I never sample from live instruments, or hardly ever

Honestly, I am afraid this is targeting the same group as Korg Gadget, Auxy, Blocks wave, Reason compact, FLStudio mobile,...
I don't think we need another walled-garden, dumbed-down, "beat-making", "ideas-sketchpad" app. There's ton of such apps on app store.
What we need is serious production tool that get's all the potential out of AUv3, that has a serious file management, serious time-stretching (and talking about Ableton - serious warping feature), ideally some semi-modular system behind (Bitwig or Drambo-inspired) etc...
Of course, this is the toughest part. But honestly, without that, iOS will never be a serious production tool.
We need more apps like AUM, Cubasis, Drambo, maybe even Beatmaker 3 (with is still unbeaten in sample-editing features) etc. But not another toy app. Remember the fail of Propellerheads with Reason. Currently, anyone can make a simple app like that. But going deeper requires more serious approach.
The only thing that's unique and I like is the integration with Ableton Live. But honestly, this also shows what's the goal of this app is: funneling new users into desktop version of Live.

Pretty my thoughts on this. I dont need another “sketchpad” app.

I did think that at first when deciding if I would try it or not. I never really got into the novelty sketch apps, this is different.

Yeah what I 'd like to see is Ableton release is an extension of Push for iPad, not a replacement for Push like Touchable, but an extension eg being able to visualise more of the set and create a bigger display for working with the Push without needing a computer monitor. That would be great :)

But like Apple with logic, Ableton would never spend resources releasing a direct competitor to their own product on another platform with a tiny market share in comparison to the support and resources it would take. Most people including me quite rightly prefer to work in a DAW on a big desktop system where it is more efficient and multiple screens etc.

    @ipadbeatmaking : What’s yiur take ?

    I haven’t grabbed it yet.

On the surface it looks like what iMaschine was trying to do for Maschine. ‘Start a project here and finish it there’

Seems pretty cool if u happen to be an Ableton user with an iPhone, but don’t consider iOS your music making platform.

Lots of people seem to like it so that’s good for Ableton. The retrospective recording Im hearing about sounds great. Hopefully this inspires other devs to follow that feature.

Lack of connectivity is unfortunate, hopefully an update is coming soon that addresses midi controller connectivity and better audio/midi export options.

Well, after importing a Note project into Ableton Live, one can see its power. Everything is so 'lined up'. One can only imagine Midi, Auv3, and Key transpose (like Ampify's GrooveBox)... Hopefully, there is a 'content' store on the horizon.
    Pretty nice.

So, who is sharing their creations?

Finally purchased and dove in. You guys were right, this thing is pretty damned clever even as a standalone. Love the way ideas are captured. I would like an option to be able to use free length but have it be independently detected for each instrument. And yeah, unexpected variety of sound sources for sure. With the synth templates and what not.

What do you mean? they are independent

Here’s a track which i built up using a combination of Ableton Note and Drambo. Feel free to use it how you see fit:

  • Yes, it's a nice sketchpad but I must say that I'm pretty quickly getting bored with the presets. Sampling being the only remedy.

  • Maybe a lot of you use Ableton and somehow being able to import half-baked ideas is amazing, I dunno, but this just seems like another tinker toy like the Reason one, and several other ones, that got completely blasted. Not seeing this getting much if any love if it wasn’t branded Ableton. Voice Memos reigns supreme as the idea sketchbook.

“This software isn’t appealing/useful to me” does not mean any of the following:

    • it is crap
    • It is half-baked
    • people that like it are less discerning than me

If a lot of people like something and you don’t, it probably just doesn’t suit you and isn’t actually awful in some objective sense.

No piece of software will be a good fit for everyone.

This app is clearly intended for Live Suite-based users who finish projects there. It isn’t aimed at mobile-focused workflows as disappointing as that is to people that hoped Ableton would choose to compete with their core business.

Other people liking an app doesn’t mean you have to like it..telling them that an app they like is rubbish is insulting and not just truth-telling.

I still tinker with Figure, I keep forgoting making music is a serious business!

On a more positive note, I updated my phone (iphone 6S) to iOS 15 so I could try Note there, at it's a thing of beauty!!! It works great even in this small screen!!!

I will have so much fun with this! I've tried Gadget, GR-16, Drambo... but they are too small. Note fits just right!

The reason app was only 3 tracks, Ableton Note has 8 tracks and 8 scenes, if you’re not an Ableton Live user, you’re probably not going to really appreciate this app , it’s not just Ableton branded, it’s geared towards Ableton users. I have several apps that I love because they export Ableton projects but they only render the tracks as audio clips, this on actually uses some of the same instruments that are in Ableton and the macro control assignments. So you can actually edits the instruments once in Ableton. What you see in this pic is what you see once you open an Ableton Note project in Ableton and what one of the instruments looks like.

How many presets does this have? And how tweakable are the sounds?

I might get it to just have wavetable patches to play with it. I have plenty of drum samples to feed into this.

Not very tweakable, just 8 macro knobs

I opened it on Live Lite and wave table works, but only shows the 8 knobs, it works excellent!

setting aside the rest of your pleasingly Grinchy post i was curious about this-

Peter Kirn said this exact thing about Voice Memos in his review of Note (i think there is a link up the thread of his review)

(he is also an Ableton user/fan i think, so is understandably pleased about Notes arrival)

what is the sketch method with Voice Memos? Its a very straightforward audio recorder and editor. Youre singing into it, recording live instruments, etc.

i dont have much cred as a composer, producer, so I can’t judge that tool (amazing/not amazing etc) but i cant really use it for sketching - unless Im missing something. i ideally need something that does those 2 things along with offering midi editing, playable instruments (i like samplers, synths, drums of some kind). Clip launch too, if available.

Id prefer a drum synth like those in ED, but if there are synths onboard i can work it out.

If it doesn’t actually record audio tracks that’s ok- though i would like to import full audio tracks somewhere along the workflow.

so some stuff i’m not seeing in Note…still looking for supreme. getting all those things in one tool woukd be sweet! but might not be as quick to make stuff (on an iphone, for me) as something that has some trade offs built in, like the tinker toys.

anyways! Note got me to download Live Lite again. which i’ve used with other .als file supporting apps…we shall see if its a flow i use after today

If you solo any of your tracks on and off from left to right or in a random order then use the undo arrow I just found out works backwards what you just solo’d on and off ! Didn’t realised it worked for mixers!

Ableton cloud 🌧, is slow syncing going to make or break this app?

Are there limitations and copyright issues uploading other peoples sets to your own cloud and into Ableton?
