The Capture process took a minute to get use to but now I’m treating it like a 1,2,4 or 8 Bar looper and it all makes sense.

It’s like the way i play into Loopy Pro. Set my clip length and play away.

Here’s hoping for Midi editing and Sample Slicing in the future 😉

    And Midi in!

Yep. Already sent a short list of feature requests to help optimize our experience with Note on iOS. 😉

Is it possible to export MIDI from Ableton Lite 11 and any good pointers when doing so?

Yes but it is only possible to export each cell at a time though, so it becomes a very tedious process if you have a full project. What makes this worse is that most MIDI imports on iOS assume you are importing a whole song so do not allow you to import multiple MIDI files into a single project. This adds another step into the process...you have to export all the MIDI from the cells in Live Lite, then import them into another DAW that does to a full project export as MIDI. I did this from the Ampify Groovebox app, into Live Lite, export cells from there, import cells into patterns in FL Studio, export the track to a MIDI file for import into Cubasis. I only followed this process once as it just was not worth the effort.
If anybody has any hints that I may have missed in Live Lite to enable easier export of all MIDI in one go it would be appreciated :)

If they add stem export I would find it useful. Odds are though that we’d never see this.

    I’ll take those odds. 😉

    Sneaky, sneaky!

If they add Push2 support I would find it useful. Odds are though that we'd never see this.

    😂😂😂😂😂 hilarious

I'm not a regular Live user, only using Lite on rare occasions, but also do not have koala so the sampler on it's own is useful for me. I turned down the chance to beta test this due to a possible conflict of interest with other apps I was beta testing at the time. Kinda wishing I hadn't declined that offer now !

I like it so far, the sharing between iOS devices very useful, and the immediacy of recording is great. A very usable tool. I can see me using this more and more, especially on the phone, while waiting in the queue at the chippy, or in the local shopping centre car park while waiting for the other half, safe in the knowledge I could progress any decent ideas that generates on the ipad or desktop later.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Agreed. Haven't noodled yet, but that whole 'in the chippy on my phone but later into my ipad' sounds perfect. Of course, there are no proper chippys in Austin...

We need more apps like AUM, Cubasis, Drambo, maybe even Beatmaker 3 (with is still unbeaten in sample-editing features) etc. But not another toy app. Remember the fail of Propellerheads with Reason. Currently, anyone can make a simple app like that. But going deeper requires more serious approach.
The only thing that's unique and I like is the integration with Ableton Live. But honestly, this also shows what's the goal of this app is: funneling new users into desktop version of Live.

This looks fairly mediocre in comparison to the other apps available in iOS. I feel like the Ableton branding is doing a lot work here.

It’s not an app for finishing, mixing and mastering tracks, it’s an app for starting or sketching ideas and ultimately finishing them in Ableton. Pretty much what Reason Compact is to Reason, but not being limited to only 3 tracks. If you own Ableton, especially Ableton Suite 11.2.5, you’re going to love it and appreciate it for exactly what it is. The one thing I think they dropped the ball with is not being able to use midi keyboard controllers. You can still get some great things from it but I prefer a hands on keyboard, at least when I’m using my IPad.
Yes, Ableton branding is doing a lot of work, but that doesn’t mean the app isn’t a beast in the right hands, especially if you own Ableton. If you don’t own Ableton you’re just not going to get the full advantages of this app.

My vote for the best comment of the thread

Lol, thx, just my humble and honest opinion

You gotta love the "I like this thing, so if you don't, shut up or open another thread because this one is for the fanbois" takes. Very democratic, way to go guys. 👍

I for one really appreciate the arguments both pro and con. They make me consider aspects of this app I wouldn't otherwise think of. Thanks everyone for making good points. The ABF hive mind is usually rather brilliant.

If you’re having a pop at me there, then I think you’ve misunderstood what I meant. I came to this thread eager to discuss and learn about an important new iOS music app, only to be rapidly deflated by lots of negative posts, mostly with nothing of substance to say about the app at all.

I have nothing against well reasoned criticism, but a number of posts were anything but that. I was just wishing that people who weren’t interested in the app and/or just wanted to slag off Ableton could do it elsewhere.

I’m definitely an Ableton fan boy at this point, I own Ableton 11 Suite as well as a push 2, but like any other app, this isn’t for everyone and it’s ok. I’ve bought a lot of apps that people love that just didn’t gel with me. I won’t mention said apps but there were many so called game changers that didn’t change anything for me. As far as this app goes I do think some will miss the whole point of this app. Let’s be honest, are we really expecting a full or even half full version of Ableton, that supports auv3 , has audio tracks, export stems ( although I’d like that very much also ) for like basically $6?
Personally I love almost any app that export projects as Ableton projects, I use Groovebox and Gadget into Ableton all the time but I don’t know of any IPad app that export Ableton projects and uses Auv3, but I kinda get it. Even though newer M1 Macs let’s people use Auv3, PCs don’t and I don’t see it happening anytime soon. But who knows? But again, at the end of the day every app isn’t for everyone and it’s cool.

I think we just need Note to be an auv3 option, so we can host it in AUM or Drambo so we can get samples into it a lot easier ;)

That was my request at least to the Dev Team.

Being able to record jams with it too would tempt me to buy it, rather than being stuck with the current, limited, song export method.

Like Koala via AUM - you can sample in, run multiple instances, and record the resulting mess.

It’s all a bit last decade, otherwise.

Koala was rather limited as a 1.0 as well...Note will evolve. All the right pieces are there with the CORE of the app to go to great places. Right now I am just recording my sequences in Drambo and exporting the Samples to Note to integrate them into the track.

Gadget export to ableton with Auv3, at least I've tried it with VST on windows

Made the mistake of purchasing this. The app is weak. Basically a limited collection of synths and effects (effects which aren’t Ableton’s strong suit), and then the Simpler sampler from Live.

Absolute worst part is: The Capture function is garbage. It keeps resetting like it’s assuming you want a 1 bar clip of “funky beats like we showed you in the promo vids” every time. Want to do a slow cinematic phrase? Not gonna happen. Nothing like the capture in Live. So what good is it as a Note pad if you can’t do proper sketches?

I wasn’t expecting much, and it failed to even meet those low expectations.

As soon as a I seen the screenshot I’ll suspect a big hoax.
It look like a prebuild iOS template with some samples.
When you see what 1 person company can produce on iOS ( loopy pro,Aum,) and big companies producing this kinged of crap.
Hope most people will support those who deserve it, so they give us better and better product.
i doubt Ableton ever produce a descent app on iOS, except if Apple or other big name company lead the way.

I’m loving this app, sketching on my IPad and going straight to Ableton with the same instruments is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Of course some are gonna hate it cause…different strokes and all but it was money well spent for me personally

  • I don’t use Ableton or my Mac for music but I like this app. I’m finding myself more productive on this app than any of its kind. It doesn’t fight me or get in my way.

I just sketch out ideas as simple or as complex as they need to be, export to wav, import to FLSM for final touches and I’m done. That’s how I like to make music.

  • Yeah I also think the color palette is not very professional... /s

    SMH

It's a great groovebox, I don't have live 11, I will try it now with live lite, if it works it is definitively great way to finish your ipad sketches

You’re welcome. I always like to look at the glass as half full! It’s a healthier way to approach life.

  • I really like how this app makes it easier to separate music doodling from the work of developing and refining ideas. Having a limited, but smooth and seamless music sketch pad lets me Ableton in stray minutes and is already encouraging me to accumulate a lot of nice starts without getting sidetracked into finishing work. At the end of the day, it’s clear which of the starts are worth exploring further on the laptop and Push.

This app actually solves my biggest Ableton problem by giving me a way to devote stray minutes to music while keeping good snippets easily accessible for when I do have time for a “real” Ableton session.

  • Well said, I think ultimately that’s the whole point of the app.

  • Yeah that’s what is most interesting to me is what you all have said about it letting you be free to noodle around and then worry about the other stuff later. Not sure why I haven’t purchased yet frankly lol. Just draggin’ ass I guess 😂

  • @Tarekith said:

Exactly, but even as a non-Ableton user I find Note a well-implemented approach to creating music.

There’s more variety to sound sources than appears on the surface. The approach to automation is brilliant. The overall workflow is very intuitive once you learn the interface.

There are a few things I’d like to see added but I’m not bothered enough to bring them up just yet.

    😆👍🏼

  • Does it have Link?

Finally purchased and dove in. You guys were right, this thing is pretty damned clever even as a standalone. Love the way ideas are captured. I would like an option to be able to use free length but have it be independently detected for each instrument. And yeah, unexpected variety of sound sources for sure. With the synth templates and what not.
