Yeah I didn't wake up this morning thinking I'd be spending money on a 303 emulator, but here we are. I watched some YouTube videos and the added modulation and effects really put it over the top for me. I've been kind of hankering for a good solid 303 for Mac since Pure Acid doesn't run there.

I wasn't looking for that either, but listening to some of the more ambient sounds made with it, and with Arturia offering it to me for €49, I could be tempted. But I have a budget and a plan this week. Does anyone know when the deal on it ends?

I think these offers generally last a couple weeks but I bet you could send a message to Arturia support and find out for sure.

Depends on the installation process. If the devs included a 'receipt' then all the various files and folders can be located by this app. Sometimes that's not the case - there may be a separate uninstaller provided in the original install package or often there's no exact way to find all the crud that gets installed / created. In this case, a tool like Find Any File is really useful to track stuff down - https://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

I tried it too, as I’ve been thinking for a while that I’d like to clean up some software that I don’t use much. It did an OK job on the plugins, but when I did some looking around I realized it left a lot of supporting files and samples behind. Still, it saved me some of the work.

Aside from that, more effects, vibrato, advanced distortion, extremely powerful modulation, sub osc, and fine tuning parameters. And integration with Analog Lab V, which means deep integration with Arturia controllers. To be fair, there are a lot of 303 emulators out there and there have been for a long time. But this seems like a really good one, especially if you’re invested in Arturia software/hardware.

Yep, agree with this… why not learn to use the “find” command within a terminal window? Much much more powerful and you can be assured you’re not giving root access to anyone. Mind you, I’m a UNIX tech and think in regex, so maybe that’s why I think it’s better! Lol 🤣

It's not essential to start the app with root access - that's only granted if you hold down the option key when starting a search which prompts for an admin password (not root). I've never used it and it works fine for my purposes. In any case, 'find' only does that - you still have to locate and manually remove files either from Terminal or Finder. I admire anyone who lives for command lines (I grew up with DOS), but prefer to make my life just that little bit easier...

I'll concede the point about not being a VST (anymore?). But modulation is one of FLs main strengths and it has a huge range of effects that easily work on the sound. Sure, not from the same interface necessarily, but the final sound doesn't care about which UI it was born from.
Maybe I should have worded it like this: Could anyone make Acid V 303 make a sound, that Transistor Bass in its FL Studio environment cannot? Since I use FL, Acid V 303 would be in that environment regardless.

I mean, any two given synthesizers will each make sounds that the other cannot make, so it depends on whether those unique sounds are valuable. And sure just about any 303 clone in just about any DAW environment can be modulated and have effects applied. It's a convenience that it's built-in to Acid V so you can save a complex patch as a preset and move it to a different DAW/environment, but maybe that's not a use case for you. The fine tuning knobs that provide things like pitch drift are nice, and the sequencer is a very nice 303 sequencer with up to 64 steps per pattern with easy transposition and arpeggiator modes.

For my part, I didn't have a good 303 plugin yet and the ones that were out there hadn't inspired me to spend the money, but since I already own a bunch of Arturia software I got this one for $50. It was an easy call for me, and I certainly don't think I'm missing any features or quality vs. the other plugins that are out there.

At the end of the day though, if you don't value it above what you already have, then it's probably not worth buying. If Pure Acid was available on MacOS I probably wouldn't have bothered, to be honest.

  • Pure Acid is perfection. I’ve tried out just about everything for acid on desktop and Pure Acid is still my favorite and I wish I could get it on windows. I’ll just route the audio from my iPad into my interface and use ableton link a lot of times or sequence some hardware with it
