Waves went the subscription only route today, no more single plugin sales, there's a lot of noise at Gearspace right now, lots of people being pissed-off
Subscriptions have become pretty normal in most walks of life, but for some reason, we as music makers get mad about subscriptions. It turns me off too, but I already pay for subscriptions within other mediums without hesitation: I would imagine most of us subscribe to Spotify or Apple Music, iCloud, Netflix. Amazon Prime, Adobe, Microsoft Office, etc. Many also utilize payment agreements to buy the latest phones.
Most technology companies are seeing subscription as a way to maintain income, updates and quality with a rather low cost entry point for customers. It seems really annoying at first, but perhaps this is the new normal that will help us keep the software we love in existence and encourage some of us to be more choosy with what we spend money on, less gas 🤷🏽
I will admit Arcade by Output was intriguing for a moment, but I really enjoy doing my own sound design from the ground up. I have also utilized Splice to purchase plugins, rent to own, very convenient.
In fairness, that's a much more honest racket than their previous, "buy the plugins for almost nothing and we'll hit you with the unexpected yearly fees later on" one. 🤷 That being said, I haven't and won't use them, so my opinion is rather irrelevant.
Perfect timing for me. Every so often I dust off my waves plugins and fool myself that the installation will go smoothly. With this new sales model I can finally forget about Waves forever. Wooohoo!
Except for some freebies I received on top, I have exactly 3 plugins that I really like and want to continue using them: Pusher, OVox and Tune Real-time. Definitely I won‘t do the subscription. 149 per year is more than my „subscription“ for Bitwig but the value that Bitwig delivers is so much higher. However, will I be able to use these plugins without the subscription? It’s okay for me if I just can’t update them. I agree that the model is more honest but in my case they won’t receive any money from me anymore. In my opinion they will be doomed. Their plugins are not worth this amount if money.
Update: In case my current versions won’t work under future MacOS versions, which plugins could be alternatives for my waves plugins? OVox is really essential for my vocals ☹️

What I need is a subscription for Ableton Live Suite. That would be a subscription worth having.
I wouldn't touch a subscription, much prefer to buy the whole thing. V10 still works fine on my Mac - actually it works better than V11! I bought a second-hand license, worth doing if you can find one.
Thank you! Looks not bad but it misses all the great artist presets of OVox and the voice-to-Midi functionality. It can even do custom mappings of voice pitch to chords. That really turns your voice into a versatile Midi controller. I guess I need to look for an alternative in this department, too. Sigh
