Oh yeah I get that, I was just curious about swapping the effects and if that was a standard or above only feature. I’ve been editing the given parameters though, and it’s a lot of fun. I keep meaning to start the pro demo but I haven’t yet. Maybe I’ll do that tonight.
So if you go straight from free to standard you’re paying the same as the free-stage-standard upgrade path?
No, Stage and Stage demo both have all features for Effects (except for loading external reverb impulse files). You can definitely swap the effects. Try clicking around in UI and see if you can figure it out.
Yes.
Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I didn’t click around enough. Time to explore
I was hoping PianoTeq would accept Program Change and cycle through Presets but reading the manual it allows you to MIDI Learn each Preset. I assume they expect the user to be at a keyboard with CC options so I guess that makes sense. still PC messages to just flip through Presets would be nice behavior. Ah well, I will test to see if MIDI Learn work for an incoming PC message as well and just label the lot with PC numbers.
I think they are still in quiet mode on this one. Maybe when the first update drops they will do a splashy announcement with a Social Media campaign and we will get a rush of newbies to IOS music making.
Hey all, I'm curious about the buying mechanism here. Not because I'm going to purchase pianoteq but because what I've read so far seems like it may point to a rare App Store payment workaround.
Can you first install the free version through the App Store, then go to the Pianoteq site outside the store and buy a license that unlocks the app on your iOS devices (plus the two desktop devices), thus bypassing paying anything on the iOS App Store? It seems that way to me from what I've read here, but that seems like it would be a huge end-run around the App Store forced purchase model. That would be a significant development (in a good way) if true.
Yes indeed sir! Not sure how they’ve pulled that one off
That is very interesting and potentially huge. I wonder what would keep that from becoming a standard practice for other developers? Best not to discuss further here though. I'd hate to be the cause of a team of Apple lawyers descending on Modartt.
If I understand what you want, there's no problem setting things up so Program Change can cycle through (1) instruments, or (2) Presets. Go to Options, Midi page and spend some time looking around in targets (middle column) and sources (leftmost column). Look closely, dial down (e.g., find that 'Set parameter' menu option); there's tremendous amount of flexibility there. (I think all of that stuff may be available in host's AUv3 automation, but maybe looking at it in another form will help in finding all that's there. . . .)
That looks promising with the Next Preset target and Previous Preset. Probably driven from 2 pads or the Blueboard buttons.
Thanks.
Now I have 2 more buttons to consider like the Randomize function.
Still a lot to figure out and I do enjoy discovery through trial and failure and failure and ask the forum. The Modartt forum is still loaded with those guys that stuck with their piano lessons. I can’t call them musicians because they are more like stenographers with an attitude. I am a musical anarchist in their ears that refused to do the work. I asked a question about IOS but most of them didn’t know it was out and provided RTFM for the Mac and Windows behavior that IOS doesn’t have (yet if Gavinski is in the know).

“To give developers even more flexibility to reach their customers, Apple is also clarifying that developers can use communications, such as email, to share information about payment methods outside of their iOS app. As always, developers will not pay Apple a commission on any purchases taking place outside of their app or the App Store. Users must consent to the communication and have the right to opt out.”

Update. Apparently, IR can now be loaded.
V8.1.0 update!
Hold my beer! I have some crazy Impulse Files I made with Thafknar and will make more.
I want to hear the Steinway processed through a “vacuum cleaner” filter. Hopefully, it will have a useful
Musicall application. If NOT, I will bury it in reverb or delays.
Anarchy!
Please report back that sounds fantastic 😂
I haven't been able to get the automatic midi recording working at all. Has anybody gotten this to work? It's a feature in the standalone mode only.
I've tried with free demo version on one iPad and with licensed Standard version on another. Neither of them seem to be recording anything, despite 'Automatic Recording' being enabled in Midi Archiving Settings. Works fine on my desktop version, so I have some idea of how it should work.
The ones I have handy from Trafknar show some promise… particularly for adding extra “shadow” notes for any strong pulses in the Impulse file. It sounds like 5 second delays but buried in reverb. So, useful to create environments of events with massive reverb rooms. I’m sure some of my OwnHammer Guitar amp reverbs might be useful for the traditional tone shaping we expect from IR files.
What questions did you ask McD? I reminded Modartt yesterday that they hadn't got back to me about the idea they need to make the manual a bit more ios user friendly in parts - they whole keyboard shortcuts section for example should have a list of what the equivalents are in terms of gestures where necessary. At least we're seeing with the prompt fix of the missing ir loading ability that they seem a hell of a lot more responsive than, say, fabfilter.
Maybe contact their support? Did the Tonality dev not bring out an app for retrospective midi recording some time ago btw? I remember it had a beta version but don't actually remember any release.
I sent a request through their support portal on the missing “Use Wav Impulse”. I’m very glad they added it with this first update.
I should check out the keyboard shortcuts since I use a Smart Keyboard with my M1 iPad. It has effectively put my MacBook out of use except when I need to load a desktop only piece of software like PianoTeq8. Believe me Mac users are going to love iPad’s touch screen. 10 minutes of PianoTeq using the MacBook touch pad sent my carpal tunnel issues into severe distress.
So, the manual talking about shortcuts is still valid for iPads and iPhones support Bluetooth keyboards too.
I don’t think adding touch equivalent for keyboard shortcuts makes much sense.
I’d expect the manual to get worked over for IOS uses in due course.
My current point of frustration would be loading up the MIDI Playlist so that the files loaded survive a reboot. It also exhibits a bug where valid MIDI files that just played start reporting “Invalid file” until I reboot. Small issues that will be fixed in due course.
In general, it’s an exceptionally robust port that delights the users that have been using Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry PI versions of the app. They were exceptionally delight to learn they get access to the IOS product for free. PianoTeq has a 3 device activation limit… but Modartt has decided that with iPad and iPhone being common they would allow all devices running the same Apple ID to be granted access as 1 “Logical” device. Unfortunately, for me… family sharing is not allowed. I’d like my wife to get back to her daily piano playing on her iPhone or iPad.
Sounds fantastic! Another good reason to go with standard. I don’t have many IRs but it’s something I want to get more into. I love apps like THAFKNAR
I contacted support, will see what they say. It really adds to the functionality to have this built into the app, always on, never need to think about it, just have everything you play recorded and archived for as long as you want.
But only if you use the internal keyboard or any time you pipe midi into the app? Why would it only work in standalone? > @hes said:
Guys, please, I can’t take it anymore. You seriously have me on the verge of spending an ungodly amount of money. I’m trying to hold out until Logic is officially released and we know for sure whether it will support loading instruments from external storage. If it doesn’t, I’m all in on pianoteq. If it does (and I’m pretty sure it will)… damn. Deciding between an external SSD and pianoteq is going to give me a few sleepless nights lol
Install the PianoTeq app for free. Select the PRO demo and really use it for 20 minutes until the pop-up arrives.
Reboot the app and go again.
If you just like the instruments as is… not editing then Stage for 2 instruments might do it
For $129. Sales likely around Bkack Friday I think but do not know. 20 to 30% discount.
Organize a group and negotiate 15-20%. It took 10 for the first group to get 15% off. Each can choose their own product level and get their email recorded to apply the discount at purchase.
The Pianoteq free demo has been enough for me for more then a year. When I finaly got a hammered 88 key midi keyboard (StudioLogic had one with pitchbend and modwheel) I "splurged" on the Stage license. One hundred dollars at that time. Last year around black friday I was looking to upgrade to version 8 for m1 compatibility.
Because of the sale I chose to upgrade to Standard ($100) and also got an extra pack (Höhner for $30). The standard edition makes the most sense for its morphing abilities, but the Stage version was more then enough for years.
Waiting for thanksgiving might be smart if you don't have a 88 key keyboard yet.
I don't think pianoteq is by any means only for serious pianists, though it will definitely make everyone who's not a great player wish they could play better. Just for people who love quality sounds, pianos, tuned percussion, plucked instruments etc it is a joy to explore and tweak. Even just playing with a good onscreen auv3 keyboard like Xequence Keys AU it is a pleasure to play around with. As long as you have decent rhythm and are happy to play with a scale quantized keyboard, you can come up with some good stuff even if you don't know your way around a keyboard. Generative midi put through it, especially if you pay attention to making sure you vary velocities, can also sound great.
Tldr - I don't see this as an app only for serious pianists. It seems though that many here need to be convinced of that. McD will agree. Piano apps are always a niche interest here, where most people are more into synths. But with the standard edition opening up morphing, and all those parameters to tweak, this should really be considered a synth. I mean, it is a synth.
My main interest when buying virtual instruments was physical modeling. Also got a wivi license at that time (the studiologic keyboard also has aftertouch and breath control).
When wivi stopped being sold they upgraded all users to the ultimate edition :-)
Looking forward to the sculpt synth in logic.
Also looking forward to Sculpture! > @Alfred said:
@wim Affinity has gone this route now too. As well as Syntorial
