    Bechstein then Petrof just behind.

Not sure I'm understanding. In the case of Amazon and Netflix, they already have a cross-platform subscription license. The situation with Modarrt is not common and would only apply to those companies who offered either/both iap on desktop and free iPad versions for desktop license owners.

Note that Amazon does sell digital products without a subscription. e.g. Kindle books. Although the cross-platform bit still applies.

I’m thinking there was at least one example of someone doing the end-run without a subscription or cross-platform license being involved, though I can’t think of one at the moment. (All that stuff fell out of memory once I was no longer considering trying to make money off of apps.) But as far as I know, there’s nothing keeping it from happening.

The rule is simply that if the purchase is made through the App Store or IAP, Apple gets a cut. And that you can’t directly tell customers in the app where they can go to make the purchase. (Although, were they recently forced to loosen up on that last bit? Not that it matters, because we seldom discover new music production apps through the App Store.)

And every software company is looking for ways to experiment with subscriptions, so I don’t think already having a subscription (if that were the case) would be an impediment. It would just be a reason to try doing one. 😄

A forum-wide search for “subscription” might disabuse you of such a notion ;)

😀 It won’t. I’m well aware of the vehemence against subscriptions. There is software I stopped using because it went subscription-only and I can’t justify it. But the market decides what’s viable rather than Internet punditry.

Somebody please explain the pricing to me again, my chemo brain is having troubles lol

I thought you had to buy “Stage” first then “Standard”

But on desktop is looks like I can straight up just buy the Standard edition??
Or do I buy stage at full and then the upgrade for discount?
    I’m not understanding this fully.
Trying to get the extra discount from JRR shop etc.

And also is Oranteq on the iPad yet? I didnt see it in the drop-down menu list in the app when looking?

Purchasing Standard directly or Stage and then upgrade to Standard should normally cost the same. Without the current sale prices:

    • nothing → Standard: USD 269
    • nothing → Stage: USD 139
    • Stage → Standard: USD 130

Both paths amount to USD 269.

With the discounts, on the Modartt site, it's USD 27.80 cheaper to go straight to Standard because Stage is not discounted:

    • nothing → Standard: USD 215.20
    • nothing → Stage: USD 139
    • Stage → Standard: USD 104

On JRRShop, the discount code "group" is applied on top of the ongoing sale values, so they are the most convenient:

    • nothing → Standard: USD 180.60
    • nothing → Stage: USD 116.76
    • Stage → Standard: USD 88.20

    tl;dr
    - It's never cheaper to buy Stage and then the upgrade
    - During the sale, buying Standard directly is cheaper
    - JRRShop is cheaper, while the "group" discount code works

Edit: JRRShop has stopped supporting discount codes for Modartt products as of August 16, the rest of the above remains accurate

  • Quite pleased. With the current sale and JRR shop code I got Standard (which includes 3 instruments) for £148.

  • Alright I’m in ! Thanks @Grandbear

Now to choose my 3 instruments… oh Lordy :D

Hope that organteq makes it to iPad too!

Take you time… you can use demo mode in 20 minute intervals to really hear them all in a mix. Reboot the DAW and reset the clock. In that 20 minutes you can also record so take you time. Anyone without funds can download and experiment too.
20 minutes to play and a minute to reset.

You also don't even need to use demo mode to try all the instruments - they're all there to try in the free version, with just a few silent keys. The only thing to note is that you won't get the free instruments which are not in the demo until you have chosen your paid instruments. Annoying and strange, but that's how it is 🤷‍♂️

Also, don't go by what other people say is the best. Take your time, use your ears and see how they feel to you, and make your own decision!

You don't need to reboot the daw btw! You just need to keep pressing the reset button until it reaches the max allowable time

Even better. I hope more explore this wonderful app and play around with all the expensive controls and obscure pianos, percussion, guitars and such. It’s also very light on CPU so you can fire up a lot of instances without crackling or crashes.

Definitely... A lot of people missing out on this because they think they only like synths.

Which is strange because this is a synth that can model actual instruments and yet you can change the settings and make a lot of typically synth-like timbres too. Of course, I like synths that sound like physical instruments that don’t exist so it’s spot on for me.

  • I went funk mode

What I also love is how truly excellent even the fx are. The reverbs are gorgeous, and well chosen for their presets - in fact, the Pianoteq sound designers really dial everything in so beautifully on the presets. In that regard I guess my only complaint would be that you can only load 3 fx at a time (apart from reverb, mic position etc). I feel that the Pianoteq devs really understand coding but also really understand sound design and musicality. To find all 3 of these in a dev, at least on the ios platform, is A LOT less common than it should be!

Now they just need to fix the finicky preset menu 😉

Overall though I just love this app so much.

  • Yeah the preset menu is a bit annoying on the touch device, I noticed that.

I preferred the Blüthner overall. The other 2 were tied for second place.

I had to get the Hohner pack with mine a few weeks back. It’s fantastic.

Perhaps you didn’t find the other way to scroll/choose presets?
Press the button on the screenshot and you’ve got a better view of everything…

  • Thanks @ErrkaPetti
Never saw that. I haven’t played around much with the interface, just played the pianos a lot.

I want every app to be cross platform now like this iMac and iPad, lol.

No, hav’nt yet upgrade from Standard to Pro…
And, full unlock would be nice, but I hav’nt the need for that for now…

Overall, Pianoteq is the best app ever on mobile platform (after Logic Pro) - so pleasant to play and listen to!

Also, if you star your favourites, and hit the "favourites only" tab, then you can scroll with the arrows on the main screen, and it will only scroll between the ones you have starred.

  • Anyone with experience purchasing through JRR shop ? It seems they have bigger discount now. How does it work exactly in terms of licensing ?

I do, it was great experience, they just send you a license code that you activate on Modartt's website. Then you log in on the app and that's it.

As a testament to their customer support: I purchased the wrong upgrade (stage to pro instead of stage to stabdard), and they took care of it. It took a while because they have to request an RMA from Modartt, but I eventually got my refund.
