Let's see if Logic can dethrone Nanostudio 2. The interface looks interesting and promising at the same time but also a bit too similar to Garage Band

  • Sorry, milliseconds 😂

A little something for you to read while waiting for Logic Pro. I bought myself a new pair of 3rd Gen AirPods via Affirm Loan on Amazon. My Beats headphones cracked, so I went with AirPods instead. I didn't get the pros as I don't like earbuds sticking into my ear canals. The AirPods sit comfortably inside of the tragus and antitragus without poking into the ear canal. Great sound clarity, although I had to turn off that spatial audio. A cool effect that makes the sound sound like it's coming out of the iPad's speakers in relation to your head movement, but definitely not conductive to mixing and production.

I also like the fact that my AirPods aren't cumbersome when laying back in bed just mucking about within Garageband.

I remember reading somewhere in this forum that AirPod latency is less worse than other BT headphones/speakers, I forget the technical reasons, but would you care to comment on that?
How would you rate your experience when using a step sequencer?
Does the visual play marker represent what you’re hearing?
Is it ok enough to record trigger input into a piano roll editor on the fly?
I realize mileage will vary depending on how sucky one’s timing is to begin with, but I am curious to know. Plus, anything to derail a logic thread. 👿

I've found the BT latency to be near minimal with both Beats and AirPods. Far moreso than your run-of-the-mill Walmart/Asda BT headphones which have longer latency and poorer battery life. 🤣

Still, wired headphones are best for live recording and live performance, although with Ambient it's negligible since live Ambient is sloooow. 🤣

Latency on iOS for 2nd gen airpods pro is only 83 seconds. That's pretty incredible!

    83 seconds Gav?

You could probably manage making a decent cup of tea in that time if the water in the kettle was preheated

Having grown up in a place where there was real scarcity sometimes, I never understood those who chose to queue and camp out for days to buy new iPhones even though there was clearly no need to do that as there wasn't any scarcity at all. It was all cosplay. Now it feels like some of those very people are here on the forum, doing the online version of the same thing for LPX. 🙂👍

A few more days now and the backlash will be equally entertaining: "just Garageband in a suit", "nothing like the desktop version", "I'm done with this crap, back to Cubasis". I'm already queuing up for the show.

All haters will be surprised, but, they will probably find some little UI-thing or functionalities that they can complain on…

Personally I will still using apps like Drambo and AUM along with Logic Pro…

After working with GarageBand for a few days… and seeing the power of it, so far… Just this interface of Logic make it a game changer… all that you need (and more) right there at your fingertip.

  • Just gotta say you guys that been sleeping on GarageBand pretty funny 🤣 there’s already been a lot available here.

It’s definitely the beginning of a new era for iPad.

In that case just about every internet service provider is ‘satan’ as well or how do you pay for your internet access? Leeching of a some ones Wi-Fi? :sunglasses:

  • Pro tip: pay for the sub with Apple Card and get a 3 percent discount (USA only) 🪭

  • I think apple have priced it about right.

If they’d charged $49 as a one off half the forum would lose their shit and complain that Apple are not leaving room for any other developers.

More than $49 and normal people looking for their first DAW would be put off and it would make it unattainable for many kids that would otherwise benefit from it hugely.

$5 a month or $49 a year straddles that problem. $49 a year isn’t that bad and doesn’t discourage other developers.

But for most of us on this forum it allows us to use Logic without making a large commitment in money.

For me as a user of Logic on Mac (since forever) I can use a familiar app on my iPad when I want a change of scenery and make the most of all the other call apps I have on my iPad.

If I’m using it a lot I can keep subscribing. And I can pause paying if and when I stop using it.

When I need to dip back in, I can do so for $5. That’s not the same as lay once use forever but it does mean if I or anyone else uses Logic for iPad a lot and then for whatever reason stops using it we can access our old stuff in the future for less than the price of a pint in my local. True story.

I’m really looking forward to using Logic on my iPad. It is going to be so much better for me than any existing Daw it’s not even funny. I’m biased as I have so much time invested in the Mac version but it they’d prices it at sag $79 which isn’t unreasonable, I’d probably not go for it.

I already have Logic on my favourite platform.

I’m trying to think about it from the position of others and the only real drawback is the philosophy of subscriptions.

But you never own software anyway. Software is ephemeral. The only way of future proofing your work is to render everything always. Software dies. That mothballed iPad you want to keep so that you can access all your old discontinued apps will die.

And let’s face it, Apple were never going to do the Loopy Pro model. The vampire gamblers on Wall Street make sure all corporations go for growth at all costs and screw the consequences.

Subs are bad. Only this time I can’t think of a better solution for this particular situation. Obviously neither could Apple and let’s face it, they know more about this market than anybody as they have the keys to the only shop allowed to sell apps.

It’s a completely unfair system. Apple have updated the OS to make Logic even possible.

But hopefully by pricing it as they have they’ve left room for other developers to benefit from Logic being on iPad too.

I can’t see any of the other big desktop DAWs arriving anytime soon but I’ll be more than happy to be proved wrong. But there’s enough room on the Mac and PC for Cubase, Live, Bitwig, Digital Performer etc. Some of those have been around as long as Logic. Hopefully there will be room in the iPad too (maybe once the AppStore is no longer the only shop in town?).

Capitalism sucks. But it’s what we have.

If Logic for Mac goes sub only I’ll be mad for 5 minutes then I’ll be all in. Logic is the centre of everything I do musically. And has been for 30 years.

I am not going to cut my nose off to spite my face.

    :)

    But I do get it.

72 hrs to go ..( Logic Pro for iPad ). . I just wanna go to sleep for the next three days. I have a 12.9 M1 . Tell me what can compare with this ? Skydiving? Camping in the Grand Canyon ? A cruise ? Broadway Show ? Paris even? None of the above , sorry .
My life is good and fulfilling but it’s gonna go up several notches after Tuesday.

I will be surprised if things get better for you after Tuesday. I think you've worked yourself up into such a fever pitch of excitement that these next 72 hours will be your high point. The anticipation is always a bit better than when you get the thing. It can't help but be downhill a bit from here. :)

  • 57 hours left.

I have prepaired my finest suite, ironed my best shirt, bought some fireworks.

I’m fuckin’ prepaired to the biggest day in the iPad history…

16.6? Was that the fix for 16.5 already? Is there a way to download 16.4 only? Like how
Macs have their older macOS setups you can Download and install? I found a site saying they had an old update but it wasn’t apple so I didn’t want to chance it.

Also did anyone ever see iOS system data “other system data” at 60GB?! It’s almost 80% of my entire drive

I don't seem to have "Other" at all ...

But CLEARLY too many Apps 😅

Apps is all good dude. (60GB of other files means I have a corrupt index or something, and it needs a factory reset otherwise it’s almost fully grey and I can’t even DL ios16 now . No biggie. Still 2 days before to get all sorted. Thanks for confirming, most people say 300mb max, so 60GB is surely wrong

Yeah, if it’s as fully featured as we think it might be, I can cope with £49 for a year.

It’s the £1,599 quid for a 12.9” 500gb iPad Pro upgrade, that would be a more desirable platform for it than my old Air 4, that’s making my teeth itch.

But of course that’s why they’re doing it.

But, you can’t compare a Macbook with an iPad, if so, Apple shouldn’t have sold several hundred millions iPads…

You can although make the iPad more of a Macbook (use mouse/keyboard and external screen), but, you can’t make an Macbook iPadlike - the touch interface may never come to the Mac platform…

Right Apple policy is to segment strongly all type so an Ipad and a MacBook are not equal

Already got one, and a Mini desktop, but I want it on iOS so I have a decent DAW to use with my apps.

Potential room for improvements I can see against running LP on my 64gb Air 4 are: performance, screen size, storage. So bigger, newer, larger HD possibly required.

All hypothetical until I test out the demo. If it runs ok I’ll use it bare-bones on the Air 4, if not it’s a decision between abandoning LP, or getting a bigger (probably used M1) device.

So, pricey. I also won’t be upgrading to a desktop subscription as well, if it happens. That doesn’t rule out LP on iOS mind, as I’ll mostly be converting everything to audio chunks, so can finish off in Live on the desktop.

Basically, what I’m saying is £49 (per year) is unlikely to be the end of the expenditure for me.

It’s all about the apps for me - having a proper iOS DAW I can use them with - if they all worked on my M1 Mini LP on iOS probably wouldn’t be a consideration, or if I’d settled comfortably with an existing iOS DAW - but neither of those things have happened so I’ll have to see if logic iOS is a thing.

IPad Air 4 got a very powerful chip multicore that seems ok no need for M1 now the screen is 10.9 and pro are 11 nearly the same you biggest problem is storage as 64 GB is really tight I bought my IPad with 256 GB and still have 200 GB free space.

If LP as on Desktop allow you a minimum setup with no option to download only what you need and not all sample Library you can wait for better new IPAD pro coming next year. I can’t buy now the new IPad Pro with big storage.

You got the right chip to run LP what you can expect is a new iOS and updated LP coming to use SSD external storage.

Save your money waiting better Pro IPad coming ne t year or in 2 years is a good way too.
