Yeah I really hope they tweak the interface a good bit. If not, I doubt it will be worth it considering Buttersynth exists. Fair enough, in my case this will be a no brainer instabuy. For MPE players, Buttersynth is not on the cards, we need to be able to set up parameter assignments of per-note CC74 y axis finger wobbling so there's nothing as good as SM2 at what it does, as kind of NI Massive on iOS that is MPE (Edit; obviously more synthesis methods than massive, not a great like for like comparison). In standalone once I know where the main things all are then I do indeed sound design not always from scratch but at very least amend. Not to disagree, just that it's a perennial truism that UI doesn't need to be the best, just familiar (a la Donald Norman / Gibson / "affordances") so, in my own case, if I'm not familiar before, I go through the pain stage in order to reap the benefits of making it bend to my will. The bigger pain for me is the bugs, that half the matrix functionality and adjusting of that disappears in AUv3 - so I look forward to the dev rolling those fixes in to SM3.

At least it's easier to navigate than Woodsynth! Maybe, if there was an easier to use (and bug free) as-comprehensive Wavetable MPE synth maybe I wouldn't turn to SM2. But right now it remains in my top few and thus part of my Loopy go to template (Tera Pro, SM2, Tal-Uno-LX, Model D, Animoog, Megalit, Omega, Pianoteq, FRMS, Samplewiz 2, Quanta, DrumComputer and now Voices)

Woodsynth also falls into the category for me of a synth I genuinely hate because of the UI / UX, despite its amazing possibilities. Tiny fonts, hurts my eyes to even try to use it, and just a sea of grey. Everything looks very samey, I literally can't stand the sight of it!

Ugh I bought Woodsynth after pining after it for multiple years and it’s super powerful but the UI sucks. I rarely open it.

Worst UI on iOS for me... Sorry! Like some of this devs apps a lot, Woodulator in particular is great, but not this one. Epic epic fail of a UI / UX. Even with the apps I like, I'm still not mad about the UI, but at least they won't give me a migraine just looking at them.

i feel your frustration .. like you want to use it a lot because of sound/features but you can’t just because of UI.. exactly know how you feel, i have it same with Logic (and from large part also Drambo)

i am sound designer .. i am the guy who usually makes those presets which then sit in bank, ready for people who just want to play with synth without spending too much time seriously tweaking it ..

So if synth has horribly convoluted messy UI to the level that doing any deep sound design is endless suffering, it’s not for me 🤣

Ohh my, that's you in ButterSynth?!. First thing I did there was to play with a wavetable editor to get a better grip on it and didn't browse patches. I needed to extract formants from my wife's voice and make a few wavetables, also lots of samples waiting for the same treatment. I like your sound bank very much, lots of usable and inspiring sounds. Will check those packs at Gumroad and Patchstorage. Thanx. 🤩

Regarding SM3, you really need to be a programmer involved in serious projects to understand how much effort is needed to fundamentally change the UI. So it’s highly unlikely that v.3 will have a new UI. But excitement for the new wavetable editor is certain, at least for me.

Actually i am programmer for +25years :-) it’s my job .. just 4 years ago we decided to completely rebuild our app from scratch exactly because of fundamenral UI change .. my part is probably 70% of app code, total app size is around 400k lines of code .. it took me to build basis of new app probably 6-8 months - after that my colleagues started to contribute with code …

So you understand clearly what they need to do, especially if they convoluted the code, which could be a total mess there under the hood.

yes but if i make completely new version of app, i guess the approach is to start from scratch to build codebase again based on experience (and mistakes) i had with previous version … at least that is always my approach for nearly 3 decades of coding …

This is promised to be free for those who have the everything bundle. Also, it's promised to be able to handle both sm1 and sm2 presets. Hope I can keep this as the one synth installed with all the presets from the current two versions (would be something like 8000 or what in total 😯). Would make life... interesting 🙂

I don’t have the bundle but I have bought every synth they’ve released. Wonder if I’ll be included in that? Or is it counting desktop as well?

Uhh… yeah maybe Buttersynth is awesome …when it works. I’m waiting for the updated version before I dive deep into it. Meanwhile Obsidian can have nearly unlimited instances in NS2 because: good coding and not so bloated as Buttersynth that people can’t run more than one instance in Logic Pro (also bloated!) without crashes. There may be some hyperbole there, but not much. So yeah. I’m sure the updates to Buttersynth will make it awesome, but Obsidian has it’s benefits, as does NS2. Dendy will remind you of that as soon as he gets a chance to ignore work for a moment and waste time on the internet.

I don’t have the bundle but I have bought every synth they’ve released. Wonder if I’ll be included in that? Or is it counting desktop as well?

The everything bundle includes literally everything, both on the desktop and on iOS, and for both synths and preset packs. If you have it, they promise to give you all future preset packs for free, as well as a free copy of SM3 when it appears. So far, they have kept their promise with the presets.

Ah I’m not on desktop so wouldn’t be worth it to me. That’s cool though!
