I didn't put that last part very well. Buttersynth makes good use of Files, but even it does some rolling your own and has constraints. For example, you can't nest folders in the user presets. Factory presets aren't exposed. These aren't criticisms, just demonstration that developers generally have some amount of rolling their own preset and resources management.
Maybe, it's even probable, I didn't think of that . All movie apps I used for various tasks (fx, cut and edit) must be in front to render. The other day I had to redownload all my Korg module libraries and as they are pretty big and thus slow I thought I could swithch to another app but, no. Using a browser might be different.
I took a web browser as an example (downloading big files) because you said ”…or sometimes downloading stuff ”…
But, the same goes for Affinity Suite, I can there have something timeconsuming (render FX as an example) and switch to Logic Pro for a minute or two meanwhile Affinity Suite finish the task…
I’m on iPadOS 17 beta 3, perhaps something has changed?
Well, I'd be happy if I could get a full version of Arturia Pigments and an AUv3 version of Mitosynth...
I don’t care at all what you are for and against. (you are certainly welcome to your own opinion about opinions opinions)
I also don’t worry about 1000 miles between us or whatever that might have hinted at. (Such a weird comment, is it a flex? Haha)
I do have a desktop. I have 2 iPad pros. My opinion is unaltered. I know what I want to accomplish with my mobile studio and I know how to accomplish that. I’m not on a limited budget, maybe you are…that’s also fine.
I asked people to add to the wishlist…so far, a lot of you are criticizing my list… (even though it’s your right, it’s a waste of time)
I am fairly sure that if some of the options I listed appeared for sale in the App Store, many in here will leap… just saying
I always love when people tell me to not want new features, or to stay stuck in one place and be happy… I better not see you upgrade from your current versions cuz I will be calling you out.
I will continue to want iOS better! I will continue to email developers! I will continue to buy and build what I want!
I won’t do what you want me to do, how’s that for open honest truthful banter?
Exactly!
Stop complaining. I mean, it's already very nearly almost half as good as Windows 95 file management for god's sake! What is there to complain about?
On a good note…
ButterSynth posted an update that should increase its performance in Logic Pro.
Kinda hope it makes a big difference.
Then the actual wavetable synth part of my list will be covered, I have always liked ButterSynth ..it’s just super heavy.
Let’s see if it’s lighter now.
****RESULTS****
Okay I dipped out and just loaded 8 instances of ButterSynth into Logic. I picked a different random patch for each one. I copied the same midi sequence to them all. Cpu meter was at a little under half. I experienced no popping, drops, or artifacts. For me this is more ButterSynth than I will ever have up at once. So much much improved over having 1-2 instances in Logic with artifacts and glitchiness that I was experiencing. If you haven’t updated ButterSynth, I would say check it out. See if you can get more out of it.
You misunderstand me, I’m not against progress on this mobile platform…
I’ve put thousands of dollars on software on Appstore since 2008, and, will continue with that, and, just like many of us, I have too many apps that I can’t get some attention…
There are good and bad things about iOS, same with desktop, OF course some people will have our own preferences. Usually winning them over to our view (not that there should really be a need to do that) is better achieved by sharing your enthusiasm than by trying to make them feel bad about their preferences. I prefer iOS, but I have no need ot try to stick that opinion down other’s throats, thank god.
My method for sorting thru too many plugs, apps, etc. I usually pick a day where I am uninspired, and go thru different plugs and apps and weed out things that I certainly haven’t gelled with or don’t see myself using right away. The App Store will keep that instance for me in most cases (until the app dies) so I can always reload it if my musical palette changes in a future project.
It keeps the options down, keeps the workflow moving forward for me. It may not be a method everyone would enjoy, but I have had success with it…I also have made some really good songs as playing with less loaded instruments and effects can render beautiful accidents.
I will add, I do this on my studio Daw machines as well. I also change rearrange all my hardware for each new year as well. I find this is inspiring and it helps me locate bad workflow areas and bad/dirty cables etc.
I think it's something that happens when there are too many apps that can handle a certain file type. Apple (yes, this is firmly on Apple) only shows a limited number of programs in the share targets list. I have had this with other programs and the only solution was to offload apps until finally the app I wanted showed in the list. It seemed at the time that once I had picked the app then it stayed available in the list after I re-downloaded the apps I had offloaded.
Might be something you could try if interested.
Apple often makes assumptions about the maximum number of apps that people will have. We don't fit those assumptions.
There is definitely an OS bug in the Share/Open With mechanism when there are more possible targets than some mysterious undocumented limit. It drives me nuts because open in doesn't work right when one has a lot of apps that can potentially open the shared file.
Beat Scholar is so good. It’s becoming one of my favorite drum machines as well.
One can hope, but I doubt it.
Are you swedish?
This thread has been great. I think the dialogue has been positive even when negative, if you know what i mean. @MrSmileZ : I ended up buying Trackspacer, Movement, and SubLab XL because of this list, so thanks for that.
Question: How much better than or different from is Soothe2 compared to Smooth Operator (which I have and like a lot, but don’t absolutely love)?
Now, my wishes for iOS:
Pretty much anything from Acustica Audio, but particularly:
Ash or Fire The Clip
Everything from Pulsar Modular
They had Lunar Lander for a while
P42 Climax is an incredibly good line amp/saturator
Also the Sound Particles Panner suite, Brightness Panner and Energy Panner, which are remarkable tools
Last, I want Softube Modular on iPad, because I like creating on the iPad better and “engineering” better on the Mac.
Especially the Buchla modules
The thing that has amazed me going back to MacOS/Logic is just how much better it sounds and how much more Hi-Fi the preamps, EQs, and compressors are. Heck, even the tape emulations. On iOS, we have ReelBus, Chow, and Caelum. All good, but all lackluster compared to Taupe, Softube Tape, Kiive Tape Face, UAD Studer, and Baby Audio TAIP.
IOS music making is revolutionary. What I want is universality (that’s how I interpret @MrSmileZ wishlist) so that our choices are because of workflow, not exclusivity.
Instacomposer 2
I was right, this thread is just another shopping list! Don’t get me wrong, who doesn’t like shopping lists, I certainly do.
Here is mine humble list:
I have no app needs as I have no desire for my iPad to a portable version of the desktop. Those two worlds are firmly separate for me. I would love to see these things though:
OK, there is one app need:
Side question: Why do people put full emotion into their voices when talking to Siri, and refer to "her" in the first person? Damn it's hard to filter out when you're being talked to when even dictating text is laden with full emotional content. I mean, I can understand talking to a plant that way, but an iPad? 🤦🏻♂️
Absolute gold !! Urgently need such bot too !!!!
Yea I’m with all of this too. Lol
I just really want AudioThings Speakers app on iOS.
Surely that wouldn’t be the case if they ported to iOS. Super powerful synths like Twin3 and Buttersynth take up less than 1/10 of that space.
If it was a full port it would be about the same size. Porting something to iOS doesn’t reduce the size unless functionality or samples quantity/quality are reduced.
So what’s taking up all that storage? That seems huge when there are some very powerful synths that take up considerably less space. Is it just because of the amount of presets? I know the desktop version has a ton of samples/presets included. (Or so I’ve heard).
Samples.
Presets don’t take any appreciable space.
isn’t all that sample stuff optional even on desktop ?? Can’t remember.. It woujd make sense if somebody is interested stricly about synth part and not samples…
I’m not 100% sure. I’ll have to ask my close friend who uses it a lot. I know Logic for iPad takes up way less space than the desktop version. I think the desktop version is something like 60-80 gb right? Surely apple would have enough sense to realize a lot of people don’t have super high storage capacity iPads and therefore wouldn’t be able to download it. But who knows.
There are things i would like to see on ios, like i have on pc, but until that happens few days ago i bought Audio 4c audio interface , to merge best of ios and pc, plus groovebox Deluge. So far works really good. Still early days, but looks promising.
For people who are interested (though example is mac + ipad and octatrack) you can check this video
