NS2 is in discount for $5????

Oh. This makes me just incredibly sad how this project ended. Like, i am glad for Matt he has proper job and probably much more time for family, of course.

But it makes me incredibly sad for NS, cause for me this had so big potential, for me this was the kind of project you see once per lifetime :-((

Yes, very sad indeed, made sadder by some people quibbling over a measly $5 in spite of the reality that if Obsidian were released as a new AUv3 synth app people would be happily paying 3-4 times that. Is there a comparable sampler-synth…? For $5…? FFS just consider it a sampler-synth with drum machine for free. It’s worth way more than $5.

Yeah, this is really sad. There aren’t many people who can build music apps at Matt's level. Having him quit is a real loss for the whole iOS space. :/

  • Nanostudio 2 is one of the most launched app on many peoples devices. Count me in 😎

  • Just getting to grips with it myself and really like what I'm experiencing. There are different worakarounds I'm exploring. I take things for what they are and see how I can make it work for me.

Using Koala as Auv3 in NS - and you have all it's functionality (audio/samples + sequences) + NS together. Just use midi mapping in koala (using notes not cc), so you can get anything triggered to play in NS.

Drambo as Auv3 - I'm exploring ways to use probability in NS + take advantage of the built in synths/effects/and patchstorage creations.

Still working out the best way to use Scaler. Been exploring different approaches and watching tutorials - and will eventually find the approach that works best for me. I like to be able to record directly into NS (keeps me in the flow) - rather than export/import midi files.

My only real wishlist (which I know isn't gonna happen) - is being able to MIDI map - Play/Record/Restart in NS to a midi controller (rather than having to touch my iPad mini.)

But for now, really enjoying using it.

I don't see anyone quibbling over the price.

    Same.

But does everyone want to consume the storage space and the time to learn a DAW that they may not use because it doesn't fit their workflow due to not having audio tracks? Do many people want to load up a full DAW just to use a synth or drum machine?

I'm certainly not one to open an app just for a synth. Which is why I'm glad NS2 is my preferred workflow.

I can understand why it's a sensitive issue when people disregard NS2, for those that are fond of Matt and of NS1 and NS2, and who saw how much dedication and the years of work that went into making it. I'm one of those people. It makes me sad too. I wish it had gone so much better for Matt.

It does seem to touch some nerves when a naysayer pops up, but eh. Comes with the territory.

But I don't think price is the issue and I don't blame anyone for not thinking it's useful for them.

Exactly. All of us have workflows as unique to each person. :)

OK, fair enough, maybe I should have said “on the fence over” $5 rather than “quibbling”. The gist of what I was saying was we have all spent way more for just a synth. That Matt feels compelled to lower NS2 to $5 is a sad state of affairs. Just expressing an opinion and agreeing with other who also expressed that. I just bought Waldorf’s Microwave, which seems cool enough, but I knew I wouldn’t be using it as much as other apps. I want to support that dev, like others, because Nave was cool, and we could all benefit from cool apps from Waldorf. It doesn’t need to be a primary tool for me

But does everyone want to consume the storage space and the time to learn a DAW that they may not use because it doesn't fit their workflow due to not having audio tracks? Do many people want to load up a full DAW just to use a synth or drum machine?

Different argument, which I didn’t touch on, and each must decide for themselves based on their hardware.

But I don't think price is the issue and I don't blame anyone for not thinking it's useful for them.

Price might not be the issue, and I don’t blame anyone for their choice of app usage. Features aren’t right for a person’s workflow? Fine. Anyone also buying preset banks or sample banks for $$$? I look at a lot of possibly useful sounds for $5 and even if I were using a different DAW I would invest that much just for the sounds. I did that with BM2 & BM3 which I never used as a DAW. Don’t we all end up with apps we don’t use as our primary tools? I’m not trying to talk anyone into using NS2, just pointing out (as others have) that it is sad some won’t buy it for even $5. Is it really useless for $5? Sample it and delete it if you need space. I dunno.

So while you may quibble with my phrasing, I think we can both agree that it is a sad situation, if even for slightly different reasons.

    Yep.

You raise a lot of good points in your post. I agree too that for $5 it seems like anyone could benefit from buying NS2 even if they end up not using it. It’s worth it even just to explore for its elegance alone.

  • As I said In another post that’s the only reason I bought it: to see and feel firsthand the elegance of ns2. (It really is the most impressive [indie] project I’ve yet to see DAW wise)…i couldn’t spend $15 for a preview but for $5 I had to try it, and I’m pleasantly surprised. I may end up making a track with it one day.

I still kinda think/hope that he didn’t want to part ways with his work because he might find some time at some point to complete his vision - he never seemed like someone who’s in it for the big bucks, but vision and principles.
It’s hard to imagine that a project that consumed nearly a decade will end flushed down the toilet… or (imo) even worse gets trashed by a third party.

  • Ok ! ok ! I give up! I bought it!

Btw I am the OP of this thread 🙂

If you're looking for audio tracks @ecou there is always this option to use in NS2.

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/multitrack-recorder-plugin/id1483833410

But yeah, no native audio tracks. I myself have learned to live without audio tracks and use Slate to play back pieces of audio (usually vocals).

As discussed earlier in the thread, you can’t record into multitrack recorder or any other audio effect from external audio in Nanostudio 2 as Nanostudio 2 doesn’t provide access to external audio input to plugins.

Up-thread I discussed how the KQ Voice Plugins’ Loopback login can be used to get around that so that multitrack recorder or Loopy Pro could be used for recording audio tracks.

  • So the two solutions are KQ Voice Plugins or the sampler method….

When recording to the sampler, can you hear the song playback?

For audio tracks Cubasis and NS2 seem to work well with Ableton Link Start/Stop. Throw in Bm3 for sampler action, good eatin!

    So you use ns2+cubasis?

    what about mixing and mastering?
    Well,really mixing ….
Do you find it difficult to mix after adding live audio parts ?

I’m guessing you finish as much in ns2 as you can before sending out to Cubasis?

Do you send all stems separately or do you send the whole bounced mix as one track to Cubasis ?

    Thx

I use various apps with Link, start/stop support is nice at times.

I have done this with external hardware like Circuit and my electric guitar for a bit, but for guitar I would prefer to just sample it in BM3 and edit it there as I am not a good guitar player and not too concerned with things sounding like natural performances. But I do think Cubasis would be fine for mixing live audio parts.

Yah, if I were mixing in iOS I would likely export the NS2 and BM3 stems to Cubasis. As is I just get things into Samplitude on PC and further arrange, mix/master there.

Caustic has risen again!!! YouTube “Saving Caustic”

  • NS2, BM3 and Cubasis can all be loaded into AUM or Loopy Pro for integrated fun - for at least as long as IAA continues to function.

Loading them first, keeping them from crashing, and not having any state saving is a pain in the butt, but it's fun to mess with some times.
