You're taking the piss now, mate. 😄

But you're not wrong. My well-documented, if futile, work in correcting some basic flaws in humanity's history (specifically, educating non-Hungarians about what goulash actually is/should be as opposed what they think it is) has convinced me that people are largely incorrigible. 🤷

I’m not gonna lie to you, this theme is too much for my artistic bohemian brain.
Blaming some effigy instead of real persons should help, at least theoretically. ;)

    BTW, I love Hungarian goulash!

Being a more or less culturally white bread generic Canadian, (a short lived nation with little beef of other nations and with little overall beef towards it) I find this somewhat thankfully all kind of un-relatable. ("They call us North Americans? GASP, I am not an American!" is as close as my fake scorned nationalism can get.) Someone at some point in this thread mentioned how the Irish would go 'ape shit' if someone put a union jack on an Irish themed album etc. I do agree that historic ape stuff probably does have a lot to do with all this. Anyway, Canada was never bombed or starved by a neighbour.... yet... so who am I to judge?

  • Way late, but when im not inspired I honestly just try and force myself to at least play something. Anythingwith a hand on an instrument or 2. Then repeating patterns on fretboard or keys. Other times im like: just write one terrible song, to ease any anxiety that I don't even notice. I lack inspiration so I guess I force it, and when super down I will just lay on floor and listen to lectures. Cheers.

I envy Canadians, I’ve never been there. I just assume it’s the best place on the planet. At least it's the homeland for musicians that enriched my musical affinity. 🤩 Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Cœur de pirate, … Yeah, far away from Punk Rock, haha!

I think cultural appropriation has merit when huge profits are involved… like the beach Boys or Beatles writing “Chuck Berry” rock and roll without crediting the true master of that genre. In today’s world Chuck’s family would claim credit and get some of those profits.

Chuck’s publishing company has always owned the copyright to Surfin USA. He also got paid for the Beatles covers. Perhaps you were thinking of Led Zeppelin and Willie Dixon?

  • Watching this escalate on both threads reminds me that people can be triggered by assumed insults and that further explanations just exacerbate the insult.

There is no villain here, IMHO. Just a huge case of cultural points of view generating chaos.

It’s very useful to be educated about Japanese culture… that n-word analogy was intended to enlighten western minds to the
Japanese feelings regarding Chinese aggression over centuries. Leave that aside. There was no intention to push anyone’s buttons but buttons got pushed.

I was watching the japanese anime “Attack on Titan” which has themes of Germany and Japan working together as echoes of WWII. The Germans are unexpectedly the good guys… go figure. Japan has veterans too,

A lot of cultural awareness comes from understanding that you just might not know when you’ve stepped on a land mine. Someone slipping you clues or better yet trying to share how you could be perceived by another group is a mitzvah (a good deed done from conviction). of course, “no good deed goes unpunished.” @jankun’s efforts just triggered more misunderstandings from western mindsets.

Thank you @jankun for making the serious attempt to share a perspective from an underserved group. You woke me up and that’s generally the path to true understanding of the world. I noticed a japanese member also respected the attempt to teach the group about their views of western assumptions about japan that they bristle over.

I recall a black womanly in college telling me “if you’re not part of the solution (to racism) then you are part of the problem”.
That took me on a journey of introspection that I have never fully integrated to see racism as deeply embedded in my world view. The only solution to to see yourself as essentially human and thus flawed… who is perfect? and perfect from what point of view? It’s a conundrum… but worth staying open to the idea that you can unintentionally be insulting or disliked without even knowing why, when or how. Land mines exist between groups… it’s why we all see others and not brothers. Thinking you are free from these blinders to cultural faux pas is just hubris. No one can see all points of view so knowing more is helpful unless you just want to stick to your klan and fuck all.

  • @McD ” Thinking you are free from these blinders to cultural faux pas is just hubris”

    Agreed.

I used to live a few short hours from the border. Different world over the border that most Americans don’t experience. Most just scratch their heads at how it can be so different without realizing that the answer is in their own hands.

  • I only read the inital (edited) post. I immediately related to what you are talking about, and I've read many of your other posts, so I feel that I have some idea where you are coming from. If you're being truthful in your music and putting yourself into it fully, and feel that it realizes what you wanted to create and communicate, that's the artistic process. Once it's released, it's a piece of yourself that's out there and the more powerful and real it is, the stronger the reaction will be, good, or bad. As an artist, you're being very brave in sharing it, and I respect that. The people commenting only have to type a few words or click a button, which is far, far easier than what you are doing, and some few get satisfaction from negativity, and I have nothing to say to those people.

Exactly. I'm trying to learn to be more stoic and handle things with more grace, but yeah sometimes I get stuck into a mental loop. Not the kind of looping I like to do lol.

Thanks mate. Yeah, when I get into my mental loops, it just festers until I snap. Then I look back the next day and am like "Oh ffs, why was I like that?" 😂 As I told Gav, trying to handle things more stoicly and with more grace. Didn't do a very good job of that yesterday.
