Strangest node is the Note/Chord. Does anyone use this? Id love to see a method to add chord sequences into piano roll, but a node devoted to just one note/chord seems bizarre.

I kinda scratched my head about this one as well, but if you think of it as a chord per scene, it can be seen as a way to easily experiment with different chords over other playing patterns. It's kind of convenient to not have to think about moving chords around in a piano roll. It's more useful than I expected. I can also see how the ambient crowd might like it even for single notes. May also be more handy once patterns can be chained and/or there's a song mode.

Anyway, it's not like node types take up any room or resources or clutter up anything. They can simply be ignored if you have no use for them.

  • @ElliottGarage you are making it better and better with every upgrade, great job, highly appreciated !

That’s how I’ve been using it. Maybe there”ll be a gate node later too.

As a card carrying member of the ambient and experimental crowd, I definitely like the note/chord mode and use it almost every time I open the app. Which is pretty often.

Possible use case is to use the note chord node to record into the piano roll. Best of both worlds?

  • Hello everyone! I hope this is ok, but i wanted to ask if people could vote on this feature request to give us access to a global time signature or at least an option to toggle between 3/4 and 4/4. A lot of eg nodes great features like the metronome, automation recording, global scene switching and playback of the arpeggiator and note/chord node are stuck to 4/4 timing wich can make it a bit cumbersome to work on a song wich is made of multiple of 3 steps (3/4). You can find the post to vote here:

    https://eg-nodes.canny.io/feature-requests/p/set-global-time-signature-34

I hope this doesn’t seem like a selfish but eg nodes is my main sequencer atm for hardware and software and i love everything about it but…. most of my songs are in 3/4. I understand that elliot is getting a lot of requests that is why i am trying to get people to vote on this to show that it is important. Thanks in advance for your consideration!

You can accomplish something similar using Just Chords as a MIDIFx https://apps.apple.com/us/app/just-chords/id1632968272
It uses songs in the chord pro format, outputs block chords when used as an AU. You can create your own chord charts as well.

Ha @5k3105 so what do you like about it? I haven’t purchased it, but kind of seeing similar things and thinking maybe I’m just not the target market. If one already has an arsenal of generative apps with chords/progressions, arps, riffs, Etc that can be recorded into piano rolls rapidly from a column in AUM or Drambo into its clips, I’m not seeing a huge value proposition. Maybe it’s worth it just to easily sequence/map dusty apps though?

Usually I can tell if I like something by the first couple bars and if the generative Node is something that I have to wait through or isn’t a little steerable then maybe not it’s not for me. Xynthesizer is still great in that steerable morphing way.
If it was all in one and in a way you can stack different chords into the piano roll like Live 12 or generate all lanes instantly, lock lanes aspects like Riffer Etc. I’d jump on it. Not disparaging the app at all, just hard to tell if it’s an iOS secret sauce or another bottle that will sit on the shelf.

Probably just lets you rapidly make your generative stuff i guess. And presently, kind of dj it. I dont think it works like riffer though. Riffer gives a lot of controls and options. The generative node here is just like, gimme endless random at scale, frequency and note.

Im def one of the unwelcome voices here, so take it with a grain of salt. I can just as easily poke randomly on a piano roll and eventually come up with something. And i have option to delete and move and develop a theme.

It seems like eg loves developing on this, at least for now, so maybe he’ll eventually add some more features to the generative node, idk. I think there are a lot of great ideas he could pursue in this app and its a great foundation for this like meta-composition idea he has with these node types. As for generative, the less purely random it is, the more interesting it becomes imo.

So far I havent used nodes much. It was cheap and i wanted to support dev of a new auv host basically. Im not target audience but hopefully people will beg it into something that you can compose songs with.

Your point is that you already have apps that are more tweakable. The nodes here are all very basic.

Its basic, but it gives you a uniform ui to compose with, maybe this is the point, and you can also use your other apps in here also.

I dont know if he plans on making more node types or giving existing nodes more options. And if he did he may not want to tell anyone yet until all bugs and basic features are finished.

As for the note node though! Wow. Completely useless :D

Another thing.. adding sliders and xy pads and recording automation. This is really fun and quick in nodes, and a big pain to achieve using any other app.

  • I use the note node to trigger things (loops, fx changes, scenes, etc) in other apps. Otherwise, of limited utility to me.

Your ':D' indicates maybe you're just trying to have fun. But the needless commotion and emotion that this arouses on ABF forums is unwanted.

So just a warning from an ABF users who has seen many previous users banned for similar activity: You're perfectly welcome to hang around, even if your tone is usually critical or negative. But if your idea of fun is trying to stir up commotion, you're going to get banned.

I'm very sorry. I certainly didn't mean to threaten at all. If it came off that way I'm very sorry.

I was merely trying to give you some helpful advice in that private message, to warn you without calling you out publicly.

I said I'd "seen many previous users banned for similar activity". I hope I didn't imply that I had anything to do with the banning. I didn't and I don't.

I'm all for people participating even when they're making negative, critical comments. That's fine. And the forum in general is very open to those comments. But, like I said in that private message, users who try to stir up commotion by repeatedly making comments like "Completely useless." tend to get banned. Drama in general is not encouraged on ABF forum, and I somehow entangled myself in some here, so I'll check out of the conversation now, sorry to have created any problem/misunderstanding.

Well, I would buy another license (if I could) for a swipe up gesture to switch Scenes/Snapshots instantly (Legato).. I think it has reached that point.. Sitting and waiting for the sequence to complete before switching is vexing to the soul.. and a creative killer… what’s yours?

Thank you for sharing your insights. In the above, I meant I know within notes, not bars if I like something (like record shopping) and waiting through bars of pure generative isn't that interesting to me either. It becomes more interesting when things can be changed quickly, nudged in new directions, and played along with. There is something dj-like about good generative, like tag-teaming you can have it be playing parts of pads while you're playing other parts Etc.

There's not really a great balance of positive and negative feedback here. Lots of dopamine hits collecting tools, so much easier than gaining experience and muscle memory. Constructive criticism, offered in the spirit of improvement, should always be welcome. It’s not about attacking someone’s work but about contributing to its evolution.

Completing songs on iOS is still a joke. I don't expect to do that until iOS merges with OSX or someone develops a usable multi-track lane DAW with really good automation. Did an album on iOS only and it was such pain and more trouble than it was worth. Drambo in AUM with Koala feeding into itself with generative apps and playing with them real-time is already a stem powerhouse. I like the idea of djing with Nodes.. That's how I do it in AUM flick disabling generative apps, recording parts, overdubbing. More steerable generative with flicking things on and off still seems undeveloped to where I'd personally use it. Will shut up now and keep an eye out.

    Yeah that would be nice!

The song mode is what im interested in. Not sure how it will be integrated. He could make it an iap.

I realized with this note node, .. drones are cool, but you can also add in recorded automation. So i am seeing a use for it now lol

Im one of these people who’s obsessed about dsp and processor power waste.. i am always deactivating aum nodes when not in use. I think just feeling like having too many nodes open, not being used, but using dsp, kinda dampens my exploration. Because in aum, ill have 20 channels open but only a few active at a time. Sloppy, but , still efficient

Reasons for that may be the iOS independent developers, where the creative ideas are coming from, work better alone. Until something like a base library of common components are settled on, the individual developer is left with the burden of recreating all basic functions before he even attempts adding something new. Components to deal with auv and preset search, tagging, save management for one…

Its obvious, but is it a real solution? Isnt it just a call for new frameworks, that become outdated in a few years? Sw dev 101

Koala is way more useful than what I originally bought it for. Really good app there

If we could change color prefs, enlarge and reskin drambo Id love it but im superficial like that
And drambos flick to delete midi section window drives me insane

Btw, not used logic yet and wary of their subscription model

I should shut up too. Most ppl on this forum would love that

Just to hone in on this a bit..

Its probably people who want to see it evolve but believe being too critical sets up a bad vibe and may in fact deter further development. So, premature negativity that was intended to be thought provoking and constructive could give the opposite effect it was intended to.

Yet allowing no negativity, or even teasing or jokes, is really thought police territory. And this forum gives a strong vibe of that for sure.

Id like to hear definite discussions about what this or any other app really adds to what we currently have. If it adds anything at all. If its just a different way of doing things, etc.

But at this point I wonder if any developers even care about that. Eg nodes calls itself a groovebox. What rando users see in it, immediately or potentially, is either a NO ,, or a feature request away.

Maybe a better way to accomplish this is starting an independent thread about workflow design and collaborating on what we would like to see. If you can describe it and draw it, someone may create it.
