Looks like I missed some forum drama. I'll don the appropriate safety gear and go read the thread in question.

Save your time Richard. Here is the abstract:

A member (with no clear motive?) revived an old thread about Ambient (no real bad intention from the OP in 2021) and fueled it with disdain claiming that's Ambient is not music and doesn't requires skills. Well...Opinions are opinions... It then evolved to a discussion about abstract and conceptual art with @Gavinski brilliantly mentioning the work of Marcel Duchamp to pinpoint the relevance of a Banana. The thread then reached its peak when another well known strongly opinioned member (and very likely blinded by parental love) chimed in to claim that his kids could do better then Jackson Pollock in a single afternoon. Yeah, you read right, a single afternoon !
The thread necrophile then took the opportunity to indirectly attack some of the work of our well esteemed iOS community YouTuber (I love you Gavin !! But, script might not be a bad idea sometimes 😉).
In between those highlights tons of love for ambient was transmitted and that was heartwarming.
Reading this abstract, it sounds too juicy to be true... But, yeah, drama drama drama. I really feel like staying away from this kind of bulls... (for very good reasons😉)

Can't wait to see what this Heinbach Audiothing Collab will bring !

Thanks JF - Trust me, it's hard enough to speak coherently and move knobs etc, make music, while also talking, without having a script. There's also a lot of time involved in making videos for very very little reward, and making scripts would be more effort than it is worth in our niche. But yes, some of my vids are better delivered than others and there's always room for improvement there, as long as it is improvement that doesn't involve too much extra time. Even the amount of time involved in administering giveaways is a lot more than people might think, so I'm actually going to be passing that aspect on to an assistant.

But yeah, look, once you realise someone is a troll, you call them out - that part is important - and then you just gnore them and completely stop engaging, and / or get them banned of they really overstep the lines of what is considered acceptable by mods. It's simple really 🤷‍♂️

Can definitely imagine the incredible amount of time you have to put in your content, especially given your release pace! Hoping you didn't take me observation in a bad way. It is something I noticed on tutorials for more complex apps like NonInputMixer and especially on Beatcutter. But it also gives a charm and feels like we're in front of the iPad screen with you! Your tutorial are very useful to many of us. The troll was full of s... some people find their fun in very strange ways these days...

Yeah Beatcutter was a hard one. Even though I spent a lot of time on it, that was one of the most complex and unintuitive apps I had to learn and was hard to make a video on. If devs want top quality vids, they need to pay for sponsored ones, it's that simple.

No offense taken. And yeah, that guy, like I said, I will ignore him and if he continues to try to provoke, will look at getting him banned. This forum is not a place for bullies and I'm sure he'll feel the sharp end of Doug's stick if he wishes to push things.

Honestly once you realize someone is a troll like them, it kinda becomes sad because you can see how clearly miserable they are. Sorry you had to be on the receiving end of that one. Definitely uncalled for and untrue, imo.

Yes, you have to try to have a bit of compassion, because you’re right, they generally seem very miserable, but it can be hard, and they still need to be shown that their behaviour will not be tolerated. No point stewing over it though, it’s just some random on the internet at the end of the day.

  • If this new thing comes to iOS, I’m going to buy it and make beautiful ambient music for my dog to nap to.

Hopefully, yes. The forum could do with more mods. I don't know if it has an official warning or temporary muting system, but those are things that are common, and very useful, on Telegram for example. Often judicious use of mutes and warnings can help prevent the need for a later eventual ban

Yeah I think temporary bans (1-3 days or something) or muting can be a really helpful 1st step. Even just one extra mod here could probably make a difference.

It can get sufficiently nasty and dirty in the best ways 🤩 it’s been my go to tape effect for a while now.

  • Wires is great, but my most often Audiothing is Dials. For me Dials is that special sauce, it always does something for my tracks and often you just need a pinch. I slam it on almost everything.

  • Wires is much more than something to make you sound like a cold war number station.

I frequently use wires as a nice and dirty delay line. I often put it on a bus and just sending small amounts of various tracks to it adds a lovely background ambience (not to be confused with Ambient — I don’t make Ambient it’s too easy )

Yep I agree 100%. It’s miserable and sad but also once it crosses that line, something has to be done at that point. Hopefully that line won’t be crossed.

    Not it. 🏃‍♂️💨

    Understandable

Being a mod can be a pretty thankless and sometimes tedious task. I was once a mod on a now defunct forum, and you really have to work hard at figuring out what is the fair way to deal with many situations and (worse IMO) find a way of dealing with people who absolutely refuse to acknowledge forum rules or admit when they are obviously in the wrong.

Even temporary bans are not that helpful in many cases, as people consider that they have been victimized or denied their ‘rights’ (more than once I had to deal with people who insisted I was denying them their “constitutional rights”, and there were a few times when people made threats to bring in lawyers  ).

You were clearly far too nice. If you had just spotted the warning signs and banned them earlier, it would never even have escalated to the level of threats 😂

Yes, and we would only have to have dealt with the tumbleweeds after that

    Why? What did they do?

Dials can really be pkayed like an instrument, and when you do it like that, it's easily the most interesting Audiothing release yet for iOS, for my money!

Noises and Speakers are my 2 personal favorites but Dials does round out the top 3 (maybe tied with Wires). It’s excellent.

Yeah he has plenty of albums. Anyway, albums are no longer the only path, or even the most relevant or enjoyable path, to making income as a musician
