Who knows... after the ambient backlash...

No kidding. I never thought I'd see such a backlash here. It's not like the Creations section is full of only Ambient. For example this is not Ambient.

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/57656/heart-attack-made-start-to-finish-with-drambo-on-ipad-love-to-get-your-feedback

There's a wide variety of genres to listen to. It makes no sense.

Anyways, I was confused about "Comedian" (duct-taped banana art), and initially thought it was not art. I deeply thought about it, and came to the conclusion it IS art in that it is bold, daring, challenging the status quo, rebellious, and it did get a reaction out of me, even if initially negative. It caused me to think, and isn't that what art should be about? Even if the initial reaction is an ignorant "what the hell was this person thinking when making/doing this?!"

In the end, everyone has unique likes and dislikes, but I try to go by the guideline "don't like it, don't bother with it and move on". Sometimes I'm narrow minded and don't always adhere to that. 🫣

Anyways, hopefully this ridiculous backlash simmers down. We don't need such negativity here. If such people don't like it, they can go to Gear Space and KVR and other toxic forums full of pretentious narrow minded onanism.

I think ambient is dreadful. I think it’s ok for it to exist, for people to talk about and I think it’s ok for people to hate it and talk about. It’s all alright.

On art. It might provoke. But provocation alone is not art. You can take a dump on someone’s Nan or kick them in the c**t and write to the turner prize otherwise. Actually, i probably just predicted this years winning entrant. Should add that years ago I was really interested in ambient generative music theoretically. It’s what got me into iOS music actually. Then I listened to eno and a load of it and realised I was experiencing profound, life changing boredom.

There should be a lack of pretension or message sending. That’s the greater corruption of art nowadays. If there’s a political/cringe element it’s the part where the art ends.

It bothers me a little, though it shouldn’t be a necessary requirement, that in the past, experimental, exciting art was produced by people who started out, or at least were very talented in the more traditional forms of their medium - Picasso etc. Nowadays a great deal of fine art students who go on to great success, can’t draw for shit and have pretty bad sense of aesthetics. The stuff that’s churned out is because they can’t do anything else and I think the bullshit test is being able to tell the difference.

It mostly ends up an argument between idiots who want to look cool and have no feel for things but always thought those post rock-punk-art bands totally seemed disinterested and sexy, and idiots who think good pikachurs look like photos and chocolate boxes and anything else is a fraud and anyone who likes Klimt is a hipster.

you can thank actual hipsters for that. For me personally I would like to burn down the Tate, Melvyn Bragg, bonnie Greer, and anyone who has ever been on a late night book or film or art review show or Glastonbury, housed within.

Just cos I get bored easily and my skin screammmms at repetition

Which is why I wrote this. Sorry. -_-

    • just to add to this: its been about 100 years since that French bloke did ‘the fountain’. How many fucking times do we have to see a bunch of rizlas in an unmade bed as though it’s some kind of protest against monotony and formulaic art, that everyone has already rejected, and of which there is no greater modern example. It’s like getting a tattoo to be counter conventional. By all means get a tattoo. Nothing wrong with that. BUT KNOW THAT EVERYONE DOES.

It’s all very well trying to be the forum provocateur but get your facts straight at least

  • @wingwizard In my opinion, it's fine to dislike Ambient. We all have our unique tastes. However, something I've learned throughout my life (even last week) is that one should always try to find the artistic merit in something considered art.

(Storytime - I too used to disregard Noise music as "shite" in my 20s, but I can definitely see the craft and talent behind various Noise pieces and can tell the beginners apart from those who have the chops and skills to sculpt sound to their will. Same with Ambient. I didn't consider Ambient as art until I heard Brian Eno.)

Does that means I'm going to spend $150,000 on "just an idea" such as the case of "Comedian". Nope. But it is fascinating to see what others do consider as art.

Anyways, back to Ambient. The idea behind Ambient isn't to actively listen to it (unless you're trying to study it) but rather passively listen to it whilst actively doing something else. Same with Lofi HipHop really. Meant to help one focus and concentrate on another task at hand.

Can we take the ‘ambient is shit/Ambient is great’ debate somewhere else please?

Hainbach+Audio thing collaborations are always interesting unlike the direction this thread has taken.

Come on mods. Do the mod thing. Let people argue about this in their own thread so they don’t have to continue in all the other ones. Some small degree of ‘on topic’ would be nice — we don’t need censorship, but the right discussion in the right place would be nice.

And it was shit like this that drove Hainbach away from this forum. Which is a real shame as it would be cool to still have him here. He’s one of the more interesting musicians on the tubes and his enthusiasm is infectious. He seems like a really cool bloke and its sad that he doesn’t feel welcome/appreciated here.

Yeah, I was quite annoyed to see the ambient is crap thing creep in here. It got discussed to death in the other thread already, and that thread seems to have been closed by the mods as a result. Why start it again and maybe end up getting this thread closed....@thesoundtestroom let's keep people on topic maybe, cheers Doug

+1 👍 Agreed. It's starting to annoy me. And any thoughtful discussion and debate quickly seems to devolve into filth, no matter how calmly and measured I and others try to speak. So please @thesoundtestroom let's curtail this purile rubbish.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic @Gavinski

Agreed. We need to not make this forum toxic like other music forums.

I agree. I typed something a bit more lengthy and decided it’s unhealthy haha.

  • I agree, no more mentioning Ambient Music on this thread, please.

A drum machine with piano keys? A vintage drum machine would be great, but I think it’s indeed an electric piano.
But I am into techno, what to do with an electric piano.. Would be great for Bossa Nova which is what I don’t do.

  • Less excited over instruments than fx from the sainted Hainbach, tbh.

  • Jumping in to say: this is my first plugin with Audiothing that has iOS planned in from the beginning. That makes a huge difference design-wise, and I hope you will see that once it’s out.

    Not saying anything else. 🤫

Well, that’s ratcheted up the intrigue several hundred percent! 🤣

Really looking forward to whatever it is!

No way! I was hoping that was the case (iOS from the start) but glad to see it confirmed. Thanks for popping in. Can’t wait!

  • Now that it’s confirmed it’s on iOS from the jump, I’m even more excited. I thought it was Philicorda but maybe it’s something new? Or it’s a unique take on that? Or a clone one of the many weird keyboards Hainbach has had on his channel?

Ooh, I like the sound of that and hope thart all future Audiothing releases will be keeping their eventual ios porting in mind right from the early design stages, excited now!

  • That screenshot definitely looks like the Philicorda teased a few months ago. Maybe this is a different product?

  • Yes, in that story we are teasing the Philicorda  and there's a new one today in case you are interested. But no, it's not the next product with Hainbach. We have 4 new products in the works (and of course updates!), and all new releases will have iOS and Linux versions.
