The First Logic Pro for iPad Update has Dropped!

edited October 2023 in Logic Pro

Aaaand, the release notes only mention the transform pad crashing bug in Alchemy. Version 1.0.1

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213554

But hey, at least this means there are still people at Apple who have commit permissions to the Logic Pro repositories. I was starting to wonder

  • Seriously…is that it?!

  • It's the only thing in release notes. Says to me that they took the bug seriously enough to send out a quick fix that bypassed whatever other development they have in-progress.

  • It only mentions the transform pad in Alchemy but apparently they also fixed some other issues with ES2 which could dive when rapidly tweaking the pulse-width, that bug is also 'gone' and I can no longer provoke the crash.

Both Alchemy and ES2 crashed with similar entries in the crash-logs related to SwiftUI.

Logic for Mac has not yet been update to include sample Alchemy and Beat Cutter so projects using those will not work in the Mac version of Logic and some of the sound packs present for the iPad Logic are not present on desktop Logic.

I guess it'll be with 1.1 we might get some feature updates while the last point updates will mostly be bug-fixes...

But at least we got an 'update' (or rather a bug-fix) :sunglasses:

It’s interesting that the Alchemy bug was triggered by iPadOS 17 but fixed by a patch to Logic rather than a patch to iPadOS 17. It’s been widely speculated by now, but clearly there have been updates in libraries that interact with Logic. Hopefully those updates set the stage for Logic 1.1, now that some bugs are ironed out.

I haven’t really heard reports of AUv3’s going haywire in similar ways in iPadOS 17. It would make sense to me if these bugs are related to a UI framework Apple is using in Logic. Whatever framework they used to build the built-in plugins is clearly in need of major updates, so fingers crossed that we’re seeing some growing pains with that framework and we’ll see some benefits soon with 1.1

  • Logic for Mac has not yet been update to include sample Alchemy and Beat Cutter so projects using those will not work in the Mac version of Logic

    This isn't true Sam.

LP iPad projects that contain those plugins (Sample Alchemy and Beat Breaker) will absolutely open in Logic Pro for Mac.

and some of the sound packs present for the iPad Logic are not present on desktop Logic.

Have you tried opening a LP for iPad project that contains loops/sounds from Sound Packs that haven't been released on Mac yet? I'm guessing not.

I've been as critical as anyone of Apple's lethargic approach to Logic Pro updates, but spreading misinformation about the App's current capabilities doesn't help anyone.

@Samu has done as much to answer people's nitty gritty questions about Logic Pro as anyone on this forum. He might be mistaken -- just as you yourself might be mistaken -- but he's not "spreading misinformation."

I can't get Logic for iPad projects containing Beat Breaker to load with Logic Pro 10.7.9, it complains about 'missing plug-in'.
Maybe it's because I'm on an ancient Intel Based MacMini from 2018 running macOS Sonoma?

LP iPad projects that contain those plugins (Sample Alchemy and Beat Breaker) will absolutely open in Logic Pro for Mac.

Good for you, for me they simply refuse to load without shoving up a missing plug-in dialogue?!

Yes I have, otherwise I would not mention it, DOH!
There's always the 'work around' but that's NOT an excuse for Apple not keeping the content library up to date between their apps.

I've been as critical as anyone of Apple's lethargic approach to Logic Pro updates, but spreading misinformation about the App's current capabilities doesn't help anyone.

    Whatever...
...I do my research as good as I can before I 'vent out' sorry if you see it as 'miss information' :(

I can always try re-installing Logic at some point to see if that 'fixes' is but I have my doubts...

    Cheers!

Saying this to one of the most helpful and polite people on the forum is really harsh. 🤔

    No worries...

I still can't load Logic Pro for iPad Projects containing Beat Breaker and Sample Alchemy into Logic 10.7.9 running on my Intel MacMini with macOS Sonoma installed.

I'm happy for those who apparently can though...

It could be a borked Logic installation but at the moment I don't feel like doing a total re-install and download 80+ Gigs of data as everything else works just fine and I'd rather wait for a proper Logic Pro update...

Even if you did not knowingly make a mistake, blatantly characterizing you as someone who “spreading misinformation” is pure misjudgment.

You updated to Sonoma?! I can’t because of the iZotope. Not yet. 🫤

  • @TheGarageBandGuide Maybe an idea for the next Logic Pro Guide vid?
“What happens if you open SampleAlchemy & BeatBreaker projects on Mac”
Since you already did the other way around ;)

    I'm over it already...

    Yepp!

I don't use many extra plug-ins and those I do use work without issues as I keep everything up-to-date.

On the Mac I mostly use Renoise/SunVox and Logic with a bunch of freeware plug-ins.
(I apply the same 'Logic' to my Mac as I apply to my iPad's, ie. keep only the stuff that is actually used installed, remove the rest).

Prior to macOS Sonoma install I un-install the Yamaha Midi drivers which at the moment are not macOS Sonoma compatible.
There is a 'beta' of the drivers (with no Intel support) for M-based Macs.
The driver is needed to control the UR-242 which I mostly use with the iPad where it doesn't need any additional drivers.

    Cheers!

  • Yeah. If you're not a big user of Alchemy or ES2 then this update is really a non-event. I suppose some folks have been inconvenienced by these bugs, so it's good that they got fixed. And like I said, nice to know they didn't lose the code signing key or something.

  • I don’t know if it’s the ios17 or the LP update, but Hammond B-3X now works in LP which was not the case before.

Whoa! That's huge for me. I have been hammering IK Multimedia about that for months! I haven't updated to IOS 17 yet nor have I update LP4i so I can test if it is the LP update or if it is IOS 17 that fixed it:)

I’m curious, so please let me know.
Fyi, at the first attempt I got the same ‘audio unit disabled’ message, but then I hit the reload and it’s been working since then.

Updating LP4i did not correct the problem. Updating IOS to 17.0.3 DID correct the problem! My organ is functional again! CorRection: My Hammond B3 Organ is functional again, lol.

So all of this time we thought the problem was IK Multimedia but it was Apple. It makes since because B3 worked inside of other AUv3 hosts. I wonder what other secrets Apple is holding back on......

    THIS 🫵

Rickroll strikes back. I feel like i have been trolled… 😢

  • Yeah this update is totally lame, really thought that apple would be adding some of the many missing features by now. I dunno, I paid a year up front, if it continues like this I won't be paying for another year. Maybe I'll go back to beatmaker 3, looks like they might be back in the game :D

That’s why I just did month to month. I cancelled mine and went back to Cubasis 3. Much happier with it honestly.

  • When I paid for one year I thought with this being subscription it would be the start of a journey with regular feature updates and new sound packs. It’s nearly 5 months since it was released and we get a minor bug fix for something broken in iPadOS 17 and one new sound pack. It still has irritating bugs, I feel like I payed for a mostly abandoned beta.

  • i’m still happily making music with it….however i do think the update strategy and customer engagement is quite lame and somewhat disrespectful.

  • Me I figured once LP4i was updated I'd resub. One of my mates from EDM group Sash! even sent me their Logic presets for the multisampler! I was like "Yep, I'm ready to produce in Logic." And yeah, this update was a maintenance update, which is nice, but where is full Alchemy, full access to the multisampler, Flex Pitch, etc?

I was one of the main "defenders" of LP4i's subscription model, and yes it's still a massively capable app so I'm not knocking it. But with some 3rd party plugins not working with it, and the lack of the aforementioned features, and lack of new sample packs, I'm still waiting to resubscribe.

Apple makes so much money already that it seems a simple $5/month sub is a drop in the bucket to them, and it still seems like they went "okay, here's Logic on iPad, are you finally happy yet?"

Meanwhile I'm getting a hang of my workflow in Koala Sampler and forming an EP in that! And if I need to produce more sonically complex genres, I have AUM and NS2. Right now I'm working on a structuring out a Jersey Club beat, and after that will be a Glitch/IDM beat.

That’s my thoughts as well. 5 months in with almost nothing new to show for it is kinda crazy, especially when you think of UI complaints that have been listed, bugs, AU issues, missing features (or features that haven’t been implemented yet), only 1 sample pack, etc. Makes me glad I canceled my sub and am no longer paying for it.

I like C3 better. The UI is more intuitive for me and it does all I need - for the most part - and seems to be actively supported. Not to say Logic isn’t but there seems to be much more community engagement from Steinberg. Overall I’m pretty disappointed. No hype from me anymore.

Same. However I still have some hope that things will be implemented over time that will entice me back to subscribing. It's a "wait and see" situation for me. Your mileage may vary. 🤷‍♂️

I’m definitely gonna see where it goes, and I hope for the best, even though I don’t use it because I know lots of others do. But right now I’m much more curious about what the next Cubasis update will be like. Or Cubasis 4 for that matter 🤩
