Ok @LuisMartinez - its working on ios17 as an AUV3 in Loopy Pro (thank you!) but it is still is making an audible popping sound on all the instruments and it can get pretty sluggish when changing lines/progressions (like holding/missing notes)

Also - ibassist isn't available for IAP at all (to test to see if its more stable)

Obviously that's not working good... Can't even play a line. iBassist is not longer IAP ...

Can you test it in AUM or any other host ?

Aum works a little better - seems less sluggish but the popping/clicking sound is still there.

Me too ,actually I prefer IAA (with AB3 specifically) for those type of apps , but I get why the dev moved away if it brings complexity to AU porting

  • I agree about the popping. It sounds like poorly trimmed samples or something or maybe just too abrupt envelopes. I have to heavily EQ each bass type to minimize it. Makes me want to look at using it for midi out only, though I want to check how it sounds in a mix before I go that route.

Yeah I've tried it with Beathawk and it works pretty well. I do think some of the articulation is lost in translation though

  • You know... it would be really useful if we could load in our own sounds direct to the Lumbeats apps or share them across apps. I love the HipHop Drummer but not all that keen on the sounds. Would love to be able to load in kits from funk drummer.

In my eyes, using generative bass lines is the most insulting thing you can do to your music. On the other hand, I’m just another random forum poster, so you are safe. No one should care. 😂

And i think you’re right. I’m not getting this, even though I’m sure it’s superb. Bass line is the core of a song, doesn’t require a ton of theory and you can literally play it with one finger. I’m sure it’s great for many but I don’t need this. Thanks for the comment!.

    You're both not wrong.

But, just like the drummers, it can be real useful for performing. I mean, anyone should be able to sequence a bass line, but looping a static bass line over and over gets boring (for some genres). Having some jam variation is helpful. Dynamically responding to chord changes is helpful. Not having to stop and change mindset while playing guitar is helpful.

But yeh, can become a crutch and for me isn't very satisfying for song writing. I get little satisfaction from any packaged generative stuff, loop packs, etc. But as a shortcut, or for generating ideas, for practicing and performing, it can be helpful.

My own bass lines tend to all sound all alike. They feel good in my head, but probably only my own head. Having quick input from a large number of styles does help bust out of that rut a little.

  • Can’t get make drums to work in iBassist. Followed the video, read the manual. Nothing works. Not sure how to contact developer for help.

I can agree with all of this. Of course those of us who have been musicians for 40-50 years can write our own bass lines, and even though the guitar has been my main instrument for over 40 years, I like to think that I can write and come up with some convincing bass parts on a real bass guitar, or use a sequencer to do the “playing”, of course choosing my own notes and riff ideas.

I’m no Victor Wooten or (insert your favorite technical bass player here) on the bass no, but for us, I think iBassist can serve as something to get ideas and/or draw inspiration from. And of course there is the “line editor” sequencer section where we can write/program our own lines, and build our own chord progressions etc. Obviously we aren’t tied to only using the library of included lines and progressions. To me it’s like having a sequencer like Atom (with limitations) and a Rompler like Bassalicious together all in one app, with a few more bells and whistles.

Now, for the not so seasoned musicians, and those just starting out in their music making journey, will it become a crutch and actually hinder one’s learning musicianship and theory, or accelerate it? We didn’t have all these apps 40 years ago when we were learning how to make music, so I don’t know if I can answer that question.

I do think it’s a neat app to play with, and like I said, maybe get some ideas from. I think I look at it like I look at Scaler 2; maybe something to draw inspiration from if I’m having a bit of “writer’s block”.

And speaking of, here’s Victor Wooten on keeping it simple sometimes. As in “less is more” (it’s what I took away from it anyway)
Not that this has anything to do with iBassist,

“Make Drums” only works in Stand Alone Mode and you need to insure Ableton “LINK” is activated in both iBassist and any LumBeats Drum apps you might own. It doesn’t “make drums” in ibassist per se, but it starts one of the purchased LumBeats apps and syncs the BPM via link and uses some @LuisMartinez magic to suggest settings in the Drum app that suit the selected iBassist style.

I’m thinking I might use standalone to get the drummers going (they will all be standalone) and then start all the apps in AUM and see if that’s a good way to sync up everything and still use iBassist in AUM. I haven’t tested this idea yet to see if it’s workable. I generally have to start any Lumbeats drummers as standalone before I invoke them successfully in AUM anyway. The trick I’m thinking is getting MAKE DRUMs to work and still have an AUv3 instance of ibassist running as a follow on step.

Yeh, that's a huge part of the utility of iBassist for me. I hope it gets made to work as it doesn't offer nearly as much for me without it and with having to come up with some combo of workarounds to get back to that functionality. Luis said it wasn't possible, but I find it unlikely that there's simply no way. Of course it might not be something he feels is worth prioritizing. That's totally his choice of course. ✌🏼

  • The workaround (For Make Drums) is tedious…. Having to save and load in the stand alone… But after editing a Bassline in the Line Editor (Length, variation, etc)… It is stunning to see what Make Drums comes up with…
Hoping it will come to the Au along with the drums…

BTW.. Make Drums does not work with Hip Hop Drummer.. or maybe it’s me..

I made the mistake of putting this comment in the iBassist thread (sorry, @LuisMartinez), because I didn’t target this app at all. Target was on dice-rolling bass lines. It was mainly a reflection of my own thoughts and artistic affinity.

Regarding iBassist, it's a freaking wonderful tool, almost living encyclopedia of everything bass-related. I agree with what @wim and @Edward_Alexander said, so there is no need for me to repeat everything.

I'm using version 1.21 and the issues that I previously reported in AUM are resolved, and it's working great so far. Thanks @LuisMartinez!

**Side Note: In the unlikely case anyone else had the same experience: I was a bit confused about the jam and output knobs not responding instantly to touch/drag - you have to press and give it just a moment, and then you can slide left/right to adjust. 🙂

Confusion is common with these apps because, if I remember right, they mostly don't have thorough manuals, is that still the case?

Really useful info for me, thanks! Would it be possible to use iBassist with drummers and "make drums" feature in Loopy Pro? I don't necessarily need Auv3, just to make it all work together.

There is something to start from: http://lumbeat.com/iBassist/

Anyway... I promise to improve manuals next ... but after bringing AU Parameters to iBassist

  • I was running everything in standalone and following the two minute video. I had to pause, replicate, start, pause.. too fast of a video. Appreciate the improvement of the manual as it was no help. I was on the fence of buying these apps due to the price and size and thought the value would be there. If I can get this to work, super happy. If not, ugh. Trying not to be a downer as I respect the work that it done. Just want the thing to do the thing I see people having fun with. Especially coming from someone who is not a musician and just wants to have a little fun.

  • So, I did what the kids taught me..delete all apps. Reinstall. Working. Gotta love iOS

  • Here is my video for the iBassist AUv3 Update, with AUM.

I can confirm it works! I find it works best to set Piano Motifs to output chords using MIDI channel 3 (be sure to turn on the third track in the MIDI settings in PM) and only allow iBassist to listen to that channel.

I want to add to this @LuisMartinez but also I don’t want to make any negative comments about the app because I think it’s super cool, and also because seeing you on this thread it’s evident how hard you’re working on getting it running and also engaging with users and making changes, which is really cool

For me, the clipping sound around notes kind of makes it unusable though - I’m not sure if a limiter or something would fix it but I don’t like those things when nit needed. It’s annoying because it sounds so great otherwise. I just want to out this comment here because people mentioned it, and I swear I saw somewhere In the past Luis saying it’s a deliberate inclusion, as they were the sounds made playing or something. But they’re just sample trimming sounds im sure, either way, they aren’t present recording bass or using other bass sources.

It would just be so much better without. One other thing I think would make this an essential app and the others for me, is if I could just press record and there was a keyboard and I could play the bass line?drum part with the kb or pads so it recorded into the sequence. I hate programming loops. It’s so slow and inefficient and what I can do immediately with a bass or guitar or kb takes forever, or is simplu not possible sequencing.

Anyway. Just my input. :) thanks for engaging with people
