After playing around with Salome when it first came out I thought it was great but did not really give me something that I didn't already have in some form on iOS so I got a refund. However, the update changed all that and I was about to repurchase until I discovered a couple more things that, for me, are crucial before buying again.

First, when you switch to the multiple keys layout and latch some keys, you can't switch back to the wave to make changes without undoing the latch. Also, when you latch multiple keys and you want to undo one or more of the latched keys, you can't tap again to undo one or more keys like you can with many other apps with latch/hold function. You have to unlatch everything and start again. Super annoying when you are trying to build a soundscape!

Am I missing something that will allow me to do this??

Seems otherwise like a great app with lots of potential for some great updates!!

Oh.....just realized a quick swipe down releases the latch ! :)

Yes was just about to write that - glad u discovered it. Also, the other problem you mentioned is very minor imo - just use a separate instance of Salome in a midi slot to play the Salome instrument if you want to have grid view and simultaneous ability to adjust start and end points. Not ideal, admittedly, but genuinely doesn't bother me and I definitely wouldn't let it put me off getting this.

Same. It’s minor for what is a really great app. Not sure I would’ve gotten a refund just over that…

Does it negatively affect the devs when someone gets a refund even when an issue isn’t with the app itself? I would hope not.

  • I have been on the fence and would love to demo this (iOS still needs an official demo system like Testflight, and people wouldn't have to go through a refund process too etc which relates to the comment above)

As a big Spacecraft user I'm wondering how often I would use it, as Spacecraft is quite flexible and with two layers it can make more complex sounds than Salome.

I had the same problem with Fluss, I wasn't sure, but in the end bought it and found it to be different enough to have it's place in my setup..so I am tempted...I see that Brambos supports host preset sharing which helps too :)

My request for refund had nothing to do with that. I love Bram apps and have purchased most of them! The issue was that I have so many sample mangling based apps that before the recent update it didn’t really give offer me anything that I couldn’t already easily do. I’ve, of course, repurchased the app.

The recent update was, for me, fairly significant ! Admittedly I gave up on it too soon……should’ve known better! I think the grid layout is brilliant! Drag and drop is also very important as I find, more often these days, I am dragging samples straight from my Mac desktop into apps like Tardigrain, Koala etc. Also use the d&d button on Maschine to drag straight into my iPad for more soundscape design or beat mangling away from the computer.

I get that, I’m just curious how it affects the developers when a refund is issued or if Apple even cares lol

Glad you’re enjoying it. It’s one of my favorite recent apps too. It’s equally fun as a controller for other apps as well if you haven’t tried it yet.

We absolutely need a better way to do trials for apps on iOS. I’m sure there are a lot of apps people haven’t bought that they otherwise might because they’re not yet 100% sold and have no way of testing it out.

  • I think it has been discussed before and the conclusion was that it doesn't affect devs in reality, even though it could in theory. Either way, everyone has the right to a refund if they want it, so if it does penalise the dev, people should really complain to Apple about that rather than complain about people seeking refunds (which you're not doing and I'm not criticising you here, don't worry, but it has happened here in the past!).

And yes, there really should be demo modes for apps. If that results in fewer sales then prices should just be adjusted accordingly, as necessary, but demos of some kind should really be a right, imo.

I wonder, in lieu of any changes by Apple to the Appstore model, is there a significant reason why devs couldn't offer 2 versions of their app - 1 the usual version, the other a demo version like that often offered in desktop music apps, with gaps in audio or beeps etc every few mins.

I'm kind of surprised that the EU has not introduced some kind of regulation on this tbh. Anyway, probably a topic deserving of its own thread rather than hijacking the Salome one!

I agree this is worthy of a new thread..........Every app should have anywhere from a week to a month of free use whether subscription like Logic (free for a month) or like Loopy Pro which offered 7 days before purchase.

I thought Logic was an absolutely brilliant adaptation to iPadOS but after a month of using, it made me realize I don't want a DAW on iPad after all ! I should have realized that after never using Cubasis, Nanostudio and Zenbeats.

I love the iPad for what it does that I can't do on the desktop; manipulating samples or MIDI data through touch !

Defyworthy if it’s own thread. And I agree I don’t wanna derail and take attention away from such a good app but I do sincerely hope Apple will implement some changes with the demo/trial policy. Especially now that apps seem to be getting more and more expensive.

  • I had a lovely jam with some mates last night, mainly our guitars, synths metc, but we had one spell later on that started and ended with some Salome fun, just valve noises latched and occasionally tweaked. The simplicity single screen nature of it made it incredibly easy to use between using my guitar, lovely 😊

I’ve really been enjoying this one a lot. It’s one of those that’s really well designed without the interface getting in the way. Even after the “new app smell” has worn off ;) I’m still using it pretty much every time. :)

Thanks for the recommendation, the recent keyboard update definitely makes it more appealing :)

  • This is the best sampler which offer smooth pitch bending without much artifacts or chipmunk effect. Tried many samplers, none of those produced such organic smooth pitch bending. Sounds excellent with MPE player like Linnstrument, Seaboard, Geoshred etc as if I am playing a real instrument. Great job!!

You know Salome itself has an MPE keyboard as well right? It won’t be as expressive as a Linnstrument but it’s maybe the best on iOS. Or one of them.

And the latch feature works for external synths which makes it even better. It’s fantastic to use to control a synth with some weird self made patches for drones. It’s really a great app. And super cheap for what it does, imo.

I randomly figured this out when I was looking at iOS apps that could properly play expressively. I was like wait I have Salome maybe that would work if I keyboard route in AUM. Works beautifully! Still gotta figure out mapping properly and such but for where I’m at and what I’m doing it’s great.

Wish I didn’t spend 2 hours looking at MPE stuff on Google but it’s all good.

Also wish I saw this thread before cause then I woulda already known lol.

The documentation does mention it but I don’t believe it’s highlighted enough. I wonder if MIDI Tape Recorder can pick up the expressions in AUM (I’m sure it can but I haven’t figured it out yet. I’m gonna try today)

Midi Tape recorder definitely can! Super useful for recording any mpe. I think if you find the video its creator made on youtube, you'll understand it very quickly. Brilliant tool for anyone who wants to record mpe (not an editor, though).

The documentation does mention it but I don’t believe it’s highlighted enough. I wonder if MIDI Tape Recorder can pick up the expressions in AUM (I’m sure it can but I haven’t figured it out yet. I’m gonna try today)

Glad you got it figured out. I love Salome as a controller for external synths (and as a sampler of course).

It’s a ton of fun to work with. Such a great price for all it can do.

I have been on the fence and would love to demo this (iOS still needs an official demo system like Testflight, and people wouldn't have to go through a refund process too etc which relates to the comment above)

Yes! And you can use Salome's grid keyboard to play other synths too. Worth the price just for that :)

Yeha Brams apps are generally way underpriced for what they can do. Excellent developer.

    Salome 1.1 is out now.

    • Drag 'n drop sample support

Can Salome generate multiple instruments by dragging multiple samples?

I have 47 samples at frequency middle C that I'd like to audition as instruments. If Salome can't do this, is there an app that can?

  • Hi @brambos,
I'm having issues with stuck notes using Salome in Cubasis 3 (not sure if it happens with other hosts too, I'm just using this lately). I recorded a video showing the weird behaviour:

The weirder thing is this doesn't happen every time, as you can see in the video it doesn't happen in the second instance of Salome with a MIDI snippet I just recorded using the internal keyboard (first one comes from an external MIDI controller). Also seems to be happening with Salome only, I tried switching instrument to Synthmaster Player and Tera Pro and they don't have this issue.

Any help? I love recording my hardware synths in Salome and this is extremely frustrating :(
Of course I can also share the Cubasis project if needed.

    Thanks!

Are you using an external MIDI controller that sends MPE? If not, that's probably where the issue is.

You can use a normal MIDI controller, but only on MIDI channel 1, and support is limited. You should really use an MPE controller (or the built-in onscreen controller of Salome).

It is not an MPE controller and also probably not even on channel 1. But I have others which default on channel 1, I'll try again. Thanks for the tip.

  • Fixed it! Just as a reference for others which my have the same issue: I recorded from an external keyboard which was on channel 6.
I used Mozaic and this script https://patchstorage.com/midi-channel-router/ to remap channel 6 to 1 and no more stuck notes

  • I don't get the slide parameter to work with KB-1 in AUM.
Is the slide MPE CC not 74?

    Thank you!
