  • No one is offended I hope. In fact, i was actually paying you a compliment. Maybe my wording could’ve been clearer but my point was your level as a producer makes my opinion almost null and void, (not comparing writing or music; I meant comparing your perspective and knowledge overshadows mine). And thank you for the nice words too.

I have had Logic Pro on the Mac for around four years. I resisted Logic on the iPad when it first came out, primarily due to my dislike of Apple hitting my bank account every month. But I relented. I signed up for the free first month and then paid for another month.

I canceled today. Why? Primarily because moving Logic files from the desktop to the iPad is a nightmare. There are far more Alchemy presets on the desktop than on the iPad. So, you have to bounce the track. Also, Logic iPad has locked out the deprecated IAA apps, I own a lot of these. Many work in AUM but are ignored by Logic.

I found the tools unwieldy but that's also the case with Cubasis, which I own and reinstalled today. I think the major thing is a traditional DAW, for me, doesn't work on the iPad. AUM works almost perfectly for what I do, which is ambient and experimentation with various apps, and that has become my accustomed work environment, despite the limitations of AUM.

When I first started with the iPad, I would record stems in AUM and take these over to Logic on the desktop where I have more sophisticated mastering tools. I loved Logic on the iPad's mastering assistant. It works well for a novice like me. But now that plugin is available in Logic Pro on the desktop. Looks like I'll be sending stems to the Mac again.

I have also worked with Loopy Pro's version of a DAW. It is rudimentary but works OK with clips if a timeline is needed. EG Nodes is also very interesting and promising.

I've used AUM for years. If I'd used Logic on the iPad for that period, I'd have paid hundreds of dollars for an app I used primarily for mastering. It didn't make sense.

(? guess I’m one of the few guys on here who separates desktop DAW from iPad/iOS daw)?

I don’t know about others, but I just stopped doing music on desktop. The last time I fired up Garageband on my Mac was to export the tracks from a project so I could finish it in Logic on the iPad.

You might want to check Zenbeats. You have the choice if working with clips or a traditional time line. Contrary to many beliefs you can buy it. Or get the subscription. Up to you.

The drum editor is really good and it has lots of beats and drum samples to choose from.

Did you say you make ambient? Maybe drum editor is not important to you.

    Back on topic.

I hate cubasis. Had it for years, cannot stand it.

I love Logic Pro, instantly was everything I was looking for in a daw that’s been missing for so long.

I’d be interested to know why people dislike logic and even more so would prefer cubasis? I’ve seen a few comments like this. I mean I’m genuinely curious about and interested in difference in preferences,

I think when you like the gui, the ui then learning an app becomes a pleasure and easy to remember. I can’t look at cubasis etc

I also think a lot of down to musical style or preference or if you’re a musician or a producer. Not everyone but in general I found a lot of people really liking the look of cubasis or workflow of stuff like beatmaker to be into electronic dance EDM production side etc whereas for me one look at cubasis makes me feel like I do passing a nightclub. And that is not good.

Might be the other way round for logic. I write music with instruments (I mean all kinds of things but writing is not loop based) and just sinking into that logic timeline view where the things I need are to hand, effects, automation, the layout is so relaxing to me,

I doubt I’ve noticed pro features missing if they’re quite technical production stuff

Hate? I have both cubasis and logic…they are both good and bad.
Apple is dropping the ball on Logic Pro…and it’s a sub, so if anyone should be fixing things, it should be Apple.
There are some glaringly bad things in Logic Pro.
    1. The close and crash on 90% of all projects. They should have fixed this by now.
    2. The horrid problem of creating your own logic Sample Alchemy patches and them disappearing into thin air.
    3. The inability to save…which brings us to a significant issue…
    4. The overwriting of projects into oblivion with autosave…yup there is no ‘save as’ this is a bad Nono, hope you like those changes that just auto saved over your original work? =0!
    5. No groove tracks or groove stacks under them…this is a vital vocal editing thing…
    6. No groove quantize
    7. No flex
    8. Editing with the scissor tool might be the most annoying thing to date…
    9. No strip silence?
    10. The back arrow that closes the project is so irritating, I wanna break sh’t upon doing it.

There’s like 20-30 more…but those are just little things that need to make their way to the iPad, but if they fix those 10 my sanity will be leveled up.

I also think there could be massive improvements to the entire Logic Pro Mobile user interface, moving around on it sucks.

Yeah, absolutely hate cubasis, love Logic. Not a fan of Apple but love it. I don’t make dance or loop based music and haven’t felt an issue with those things. I have felt a major issue with cubasis workflow, everything being counter intuitive to me. It’s just personally what works, and what doesn’t. Cubasis does not feel made for songwriters, or musicians (piano guitar etc) to me, and certainly doesn’t look it.

I’m not A CUBASE fanboy or anything like you may believe. Logic Pro on the Mac is my absolute number one daw. I bought Cubase for the new sound library, I stem out tracks from it for use in Logic.

The irritation you describe is exactly how I feel in cubasis or other daws. lol. Actually, other daws I feel that, cubasis is like stepping into a bar full of celebrities and people looking horribly pleased with themselves, hearing dance music bass coming from a pa, and just turning round and walking out to find a pub with oak tables for me.

Sounds like maybe you hate EDM or electronic music? I’m sorry but that’s the music I make. You don’t need to like my music though, it’s never a requirement I have for anyone.

Saving is simple, not sure what is the problem you’re having. It always saves for me. I mean, you said it doesn’t save then said it auto saves too much, or tht it’s auto saving is a problem, if there’s not a back/undo button it needs one I can’t remember

Sorry but groove tracks aren’t vital for vocals unless the singer has a poor sense of rhythm. It can really dehumanise and miss the nuances of a good singer and performance. I’m not saying they can’t be helpful but this stuff, autotune, sucks the life and magic out of a song and that’s a very delicate thing. People don’t notice when they’re too caught up with ‘all the notes at all the right times’. There’s an issue in the culture of some genres/production with this misunderstanding imo. Tools are there to be used sparingly same with effects.

My problem isn’t saving… my problem is you have to make a duplicate project because Logic won’t quit autosaving, and there is no “save as”
The groove track saves loads of editing time… I wouldn’t have a big issue with it, if editing in Logic didn’t use the zip down scissor tools from the torture chamber of music.

Love the interface. Can’t stand the interface of cubasis. These are personal preferences - personally I find cubasis unusable. It feels really basic, gui wise, to me - but the main thing is it looks like it’s designed to appeal to people in EDM or dance music. It looks like ableton a bit. It looks cold and clubby. All things I find awful and uninspiring. Each to their own

I’m not a Cubase guy…I have it, I use it for one thing…I’m not fond of its UI either.

Nothing is where I want it to be in cubasis, every system feels counter intuitive to me and weirdly designed. It will be the opposite for others, logic has a great natural workflow for people who make full songs using acoustic instruments and audio as well as midi, songwriters etc. I can’t speak for everyone but I believe this to be the case for the most part. And who it’s made for. I always struggle with this, historically in daws, and hated logic before Apple owned it. But I find it simple and natural. Problems are overwhelmingly overcome by this compared to the dreadful experience I’ve had in other iOS daws where I feel like I’m walking into some Kafka experience

Drums should be round robin. They’re not I’m sure.

Logic Pro has never crashed on me. Not once. Auria would crash every time. Not sure what you’re doing or what iPad you have if it’s crashing on ‘90% of projects’. Never heard anyone else have that problem either. Not saying to cast doubt on that, I just haven’t, so maybe it makes it easier to isolate the issue as it’s something specific your use? Or perhaps I’ve missed others having that issue I don’t know.

It could be a problem with a plug in I’m using, I’m not sure… but yes when I close the projects they crash like hell.

I’m sure I’ll run into issues, and maybe I will get annoyed too but I haven’t so far. It’s just been a joy to me like pulling out drawers and things in a workbench and everything exactly where I want it to be, particularly compared to how I felt in other iOS daws, either too weak, or having to click menus like it’s made for desktop, crashing constantly … Auria was horrendous from day one for me, cubasis not something i could even get myself into using at all I found it so off putting, lots of beatmaker feeling type stuff I can’t stand… so it’s been good for me

I do hate Apple though lol

I’m glad that you are having a wonderful Logic Pro Mobile experience. I am coming from Logic Pro on desktop to a quite feature robbed iOS version…so there are immediate inconveniences that keep on giving. I can work around any and all of it, but it’s irritating that almost every app on iOS updates several times before this Apple made subscription logic gets anything but sound packs! It’s been a year and there’s been 1 minor update addressing 1 issue.

  • All in on LP4I. I haven’t had any crashes or issues. Of course I use a couple plugins mainly. BLEASS, scaler 2 and fab filter are amazing and Korg does slow the software down but that’s not really an issue since I started freezing the tracks. Noise app hardly works but that’s a developer issue.

Wishlist would be a piano instrument added and get rid of the certain samples have to be on the Mac. At least bring the legacy presets to the iPad. That’s annoying. Could the UI be updated on the synths I say yes but it’s not a deal breaker. And the files app needs to be better integration and stop loading in bm3. I uploaded GarageBand the other day and closed it right away I couldn’t do it I had to use logic.

Recently been deep diving and have become like second nature now on the iPad mini. Really hoping for a new mini just for storage reasons. Only place I really use the Apple Pencil and I’m slowly moving my bm3 projects over. That’s a chore but recreating my library in Logic is awesome. Bonus also is my AirPods have almost zero latency I’m finding out while traveling the last month. The response time is great.

Here’s to another year of logic on the iPad and a brand new mini iPad upgrade above 256 gb storage.

Been true for me - there’s definitely not much latency with my AirPods.

  • Figured I was gonna do some rough mixing while at the terminal but the beat maker got the best of me and started a drumming track and I was expecting a a normal delay of a second but almost on time and same with playback. Runs smooth for me. Def made me a happy camper I didn’t have to bust out the wired Apple headphone I keep for that reason.

The crash on close with Logic is probably due to a misbehaving plugin, in my case it's when I have MagicDeathEye on the master strip, which is always ;)

I should probably report the issue to DDMF.

This may be what is happening to me as well.

  • Have any FFQ3 users had all their instances just zero themselves out on restart or a crash? I’ve managed it when mixing 24+ tracks. Probably memory related, but anyway something to keep in mind. For those that have had a smooth experience with no crashes in LP I am happy for you, but I do think that it feels it when you push the envelope a little. For the record it is still my default DAW to do stuff in. I think I’ve just got used to it’s idiosyncrasies. I hope for Cubasis’s side of things that they can tweak the bells and whistles a bit. There are some definite advantages to using it in some situations and I am thinking of it from the side of recording real world instruments in real world places. One thing that I find really helpful with Logic Pro is the ability to choose audio interfaces for output. If I open a project and select an audio interface I want to use and keep the programme running in the background all my other programmes will use the same interface which is useful if you are using an HDMI monitor and you want to hear the sound properly on the iPad speakers.

Concerning your complain about moving a Logic document from Mac to iPad that contain Alchemy patches - if you ’Consolidate’ your Logic document before saving it and then open up this file on iPad, the patches will be there…

Me myself have moved a lot of patches from Mac to iPad, both from Alchemy, but, also patches missing from several other instrument and effect-plugins…

It depends. Piano might be difficult, but it’s not that hard to compensate for finger drumming or one finger keyboard playing.

  • You still can't live record into a DAW, though. Latency's far too much for that.

admittedly you can't on an iPad DAW with bluetooth headphones, but it't totally possible to record live with a desktop daw (protools HDX has round-trip latency around 1ms which is totally manageable)

Rather than start a new thread I thought I’d tack on here. How are those who paid for a Logic subscription feeling as their sub comes up (those who would otherwise use Cubasis)?

Personally I’m starting to wonder if it really offers that much more for me. My main hope was the easy transfer of projects to desktop Logic subscription service and which has its limitations (some understandable, some that need to be fixed). If it wasn’t for this feature I think it’d be an easy choice to not continue with it and sole use Cubasis on iPad.

What features do others love or miss in either apps? Are there limitations in Cubasis that Logic solves for you or vice cersaversa?

My gut feeling is that Apple will release an stunning update to Logic Pro for iPad before 23:rd of may.

    Three important things for me:

    1. Full drawing automation an all parameters including velocity/volume
    2. Upgrade on all stock instruments/plugins UI (extremely boring UI now in Alchemy and Sculpture as an example)
    3. Adding the real sampler from Mac with great UI and smashing features!

I gladly pay for yet another year for Logic Pro - great stuff!

I forgotten to mention the most wanted "feature" I really wants in the coming update to Logic Pro for iPad - MIDI LEARN!!

  • Cusbasis? Did you mean Cussbasis and just left out the second s? :)

I understand how it feels if you’re coming from logic desktop. I don’t agree at all when people doing that call it GarageBand pro as it obviously not, but I totally understand being annoyed by missing features from desktop. And the lack of updates is wrong as well.

I’m personally annoyed by the lack of round robins. And you know, I understand we have different tastes but the interfaces for asian instruments are a thousand times better in garaband. I will be using that to record then importing back. And I think the lack of acoustic or world instrument packs, and everything being very dance heavy is really poor. I’m glad dance music people have these packs, but personally I open the logic store and it’s just nothing useful or interesting to me, nothing whatsoever. They need to provide more of a mix of genres.

I’m sorry if my tone seemed harsh or that I thought you were a fanboy, I get you’re not, and I’m no Apple fanboy either. I also not think my personal taste in music needs to be anyone else’s. You’re right I don’t like EDM, though I do like a lot of electronic music and synths. But we all just have different taste and needs and I hope it didn’t come across harshly again about that. No one needs to have my taste either.

I noticed it has a back button which is good though so you can always undo stuff it auto saves.

You know what I don’t mind the sub just for this app. It’s kind of my most important iOS app aside from scrivener so I can deal with it just for this app. But in general I also hate subs.

I hope it gets updated and yiu get more out of it.

I forgotten to mention the most wanted "feature" I really wants in the coming update to Logic Pro for iPad - MIDI LEARN!!

Whilst we’re waiting for proper support for this, this script will map any midi cc to any other, or any plugin parameter.

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/56050/logic-pro-how-to-use-a-midi-controller-to-control-your-plug-ins-lots-more-with-midi-scripter/p1

Check out the thread for examples of what it can do.

It doesn’t do midi learn yet as I’ve not had the time to debug it working in multiple pairs (I have it working fine with one pair). If somebody else wants to fix it in Logic on the Mac, most of the code is already there for midi learn from the example plugins.

But you can set the incoming midi to velocity, pitch bend or any Cc value in a pop up menu. You can save the channel as a preset to save you having to set it up multiple times. Yoh can also control multiple plugin parameters in multiple plugins.

    Ooohh!
Thanks - will look at this later when some spare time occur. Great work!

Thanks. Will check it out. However the app store only shows monthly subscription options.

This is the Zenbeats store. I own the iOS unlock. I think I paid 5$. It includes the whole daw and plugin. Of course it does not include the zenology. But there is tons of sound from the ZC1 synth and ZR1 drum sampler.

You can download it for free and evaluate.

  • I haven’t moved to LP from CB3 for the simple reason that it won’t run on my 2017 iPad Pro but CB3 does, and hopefully will continue to do so for a good while. Definitely something to be said for that.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have consolidated and have still had problems. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Mostly tho, I was irritated to discover Logic Pro iPad wouldn't recognize my IAA apps. that cut down on some of my favorite instrumentation. I was impressed by the amount of similarity between the tools on the desktop and those included in the iPad version. it's not "Garageband Pro" as some call it.

Have a great day!

Under the hood a lot of things happened in last update, and there have also been several free soundspacks released since the end of may last year.

Pretty sure we will see an impressive update on Logic Pro for iPad in mid may - an supergreat DAW will become a heavenly amazing DAW after this update…

    So, hold on mates!
