You made the right call Michael. Sure Errka can have an opinion and dislike the youtuber and his channel and has a right to his opinion, but then he had to go on and say those two words? 🤦‍♂️ Fml, that is so racist! Thank you for banning him.

    Yep

  • I can only imagine the amount of heat TE is going to take on and after Christmas when many people open KO2 and realize something is wrong with it. I’ve never seen a device this popular, launch with so many faulty units reported.

Apples #AntennaGate comes to mind but that wasn’t nearly as bad as this.

GC extended return/refund policy so I’ll have until February to notice any damage. I hope addressing the issue doesn’t delay whatever roadmap has been planned for it. Sheesh.

  • I really don’t think Antennagate was really a thing. Less than perfect, yes, but there was no actual fault. As much as I like TE’s products overall, I’ve experienced their dubious build quality once before. Every example I’ve heard about points to inadequate materials engineering foresight and testing, rather than any other design problem. And a lack of testing is a design problem.

But what TE and Apple have in common is that their prestige position in the market draws a lot of attention. And while I’m not about to speculate that their QC problems are comparable to any other company (because there’s enough smoke here to indicate something specific to their process), there probably is a level of unusual visibility that they should be, uh, prepared for.

  • Can anyone with an original Pocket Operator KO comment on whether it's still a good buy in comparison (whether or not you also have a KO 2)? I was actually considering getting a KO the day before the KO 2 was announced so I've been following the discussions and reviews. The Pocket Operators look good for jamming on my commute but I'm not sure I want to carry a device as large as the KO 2 with the rest of my work gear. I know I can just use Koala on my phone but I do like physical controls.

If you like the PO style small buttons and want something compact talking to your phone over BT MIDI, check this one out:

  • Did anyone hear about the unit that shipped without a display screen? I would’ve flipped if my iPad came without the screen . Such a strange dichotomy between TE’s product line and their product assembly line!

+1 that was totally shocking to read, thank you Michael

  • Thanks for that @Michael and my family of Asian immigrants thanks you. Outrageous.

After 5 Days of using the KO here’s my take on it:

    PROS
. Portability is fantastic (with a case of course)
. Playability is a ton of fun
. Getting into flow is great
    . Love the pads
    . Love the interface
    . Love the ‘Commit’ feature
. FX are fun to use for serendipitous opportunities
. Love love Midi per Pad
. Love the Scales option for Keys
    . Battery life is amazing
. Pairs nicely with other gear
. The Design is best there is for an MPC style box

    CONS
    . Want Audio over USB
    . Want STEM export
. Want Song Mode - Patterns are there…let us chain them
. Let me use a Thumb drive for more storage of Samples
. Want Live FX to work on Audio In signal
. Want ability to archive projects-is there a way to mount the KO to the desktop so we can save our Projects?
. TE fix your QC issues so you can focus on the software
. Wish we had endless encoders
. OP-1 Field level time stretching
. More EP instruments now that we have this beautiful one.

Well…that’s my POV for now…hopefully i can keep these words…unlike the words I’ve eaten from another company 😉👊🏼🎚️

Thanks. This thread is definitely not helping my GAS for this but at this point I’m all but sold. Just trying to hold out until Christmas.

  • Does anyone think that the hardware is capable of sending out audio via USB and that it’s coming in a firmware release?

I do. If they introduced velocity to physical hardware keyboards , I think they have the coding ability to enable their hardware to do it. Just my opinion fwiw. Their F/w updates are ReAL updates

Their official statement was no promises but that they are aware and considering usb audio and resampling in an update.

I think it’s a no brainer but I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

I definitely wanna pick one up, I’m just waiting to see if the QA issues are fixed. Audio over usb and resembling would make it that much better though. Especially audio over usb.

Understandable. If the many groove videos push you over the fence just be sure to grab it from Guitar Center where you can easily exchange or refund if any issues.

There are definitely plenty of updates that would improve KO2 but that’s true for every piece of software and hardware i own. In the meantime, I have an embarrassment of riches in terms of things to create and express myself with.

What a time to be alive. 🔥

+1 plus you add the GC warranty ….your gold

You can drop it out a window on purpose (don’t say you did it on purpose), and they replace it
If you don’t like something you have 15-45 Dey return
    Win win
    What a time indeed

Yep. Extra protection is another great option. 💪🏽

Also, since getting back into hardware, ive been able to drastically cut down my screen time. As such, I’ve noticed great positive impacts to my mental and physical health including but not limited to better vision, better sleep, more focus, less eye floaters (which were driving me nuts) among other things. Im getting older and want to really protect my eyes and mind as best I can.

So far, limiting screen time and returning to my accoustics (woodwinds) and HW has truly been transformative and I can’t really put a price tag on it.

Now this is one of the best arguments for using an OP-1 Field (or any hardware for that matter). Less screen time. More focus on music. :)

For sure. Had a revelation after grabbing a Roland Verselab MV-1 due to my love for Zenbeats. Found myself preferring to use Zen less and MV-1 and the tiny screen more. From there I added a J6 chord synth ($200). Amazing. If you remember, I created the term gamechangier in the Scaler 2 thread some time ago (not sure what happened to that thread btw). While still absolutely ADORE Scaler (and the new Scaler EQ), J6 is soooo much funner. The Juno sound and ability to use it as a small midi controller with pads and knobs is magical. Then I grabbed S1, a 707, an Aerophone and the rest was history. Now hooked on HW.

However, my iPad Pro and iPhone are still very valued participants in my creative workflow. Mostly as sound modules and I don’t have to look at the screen for that. Loopy Pro, Drambo, AUM, have specific and focused use cases now. Mostly as workstations for certain expressions I create with hardware or to process other audio with AUV3s I won’t spend desktop cash for (Fab Filter, etc).

I’ve learned more about sound design and music theory in the past year then I had in the previous decade spent mostly as an iPad/ios producer/musician.

Much of this due simply to a clearer mind. I stepped away from so much screen time, including social media and internet and I can’t even express nor quantify the amount of fog lifted.

Hard to do this effectively when your creativity (and hobbies) depend on screen time.

Exactly! Before social media I found myself a lot more creative. Over the years my creativity fluctuates. Sometimes I'm good at shutting out social media for a while. Othertimes I'm addicted to it like a mushroom junkie, lol, and then when I go to create during that day, nothing comes out. 😂

Hard to do this effectively if your creativity also depends on screen time.

Exactly! Before social media I found myself a lot more creative. Over the years my creativity fluctuates. Sometimes I'm good at shutting out social media for a while. Othertimes I'm addicted to it like a mushroom junkie, lol, and then when I go to create during that day, nothing comes out. 😂

For sure, one of the benefits to becoming a spam squashing mod around here was that I stepped away from engaging daily. That bled into other sites I’m a member of. Ultimately, I was able to cut down internet browsing and time sinks by 60%.

My real world relationships have all improved as has my ability to make new ones. I spend much more time out and about, in nature, practicing real instruments and—resting. I don’t “instabuy” every $10 app that seems cool which adds up to subsidize what I spend on a HW piece every few months.

  • For those interested, reps from TE are addressing HW and shipping related issues on other forums.

Taking accountability and addressing users is a positive sign. Glad to see it.

Does anyone think that the hardware is capable of sending out audio via USB and that it’s coming in a firmware release?

Ha reminds me a video I saw recently where someone bought a game from GameStop with insurance and opened the game + broke it right in front of them and according to policy they still had to replace it. Not suggesting anyone do this obviously lol

All we need is a calculator skin for Koala!

    Haha, for sure!

  • @HotStrange not suggesting it either but really? I mean if they honor it like that I’ll add it to every purchase and have an accidental water spill every two years! I mean I know they track the activity of warranty but hey, it’s good to know, if I need to use it it works like that… plus my daughter got into my studio and had a field day with my knobs and faders and one is a little “slippery” now where it waivers up and down just 1 degree value so I might have to do it anyway

That is good news. Do you have a link to that?

That was disappointing. It was a simply "Koala is great" video with absolutely no reference to differences between it and K.O. II other than a passing reference to mixing. Lazy. I don't even think he's tried one.

Not that I disagree with that Koala is great and that gear purchases may not be all they're cracked up to be. It's just that the video isn't a comparison by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not gonna waste 20 minutes of my time to find out if the OP-1F video is any better.

It’s better. He recommends a lot of free software.

I think I’m gonna make a YouTube channel and create weird clout chasing for click videos showing how much better cooking with an air fryer is to all these people spending so much on grills for their families, brick pizza ovens, cast iron gas stoves with hoods, etc.

In fact, who even needs an air fryer! George Foreman grill for the win!!!lol

Thanks. Good to know. I respect what he tries to do, and have thought the other couple of videos of his I watched were good. He just mailed it in on the K.O. II video though.
