That was disappointing. It was a simply "Koala is great" video with absolutely no reference to differences between it and K.O. II other than a passing reference to mixing. Lazy. I don't even think he's tried one.

Whole content of this guy is like this, it’s just coping about hw which he probably can’t afford and instead of admiting it he created YT channel where he is trying tomconvince audience how any HW can be replaced with free software - which doesn’t make sense in first place.

Anyway even theough i dislike this guy’s content, i think that Errka’s “jing jong” was behind the red line, it was very rude

I don't agree. The rest of the videos I've watched of his are useful and informative for some people. You're just not among the targeted audience by a long shot.

If I do have any issue with these type of weird videos, it’s the reality that this sort of content actually influences real people to do more of it. I can somewhat see some entertainment value but that people seek the guy out to be informed is interesting. I’m too cynical to be alarmed about anything. Just ever interested—and curious.

As social media rose to dominance, I was particularly aware of how terms like “follower”, “likes”, “selfie”, “influencer” were being manipulated. Fast forward to today and…well—yeah.🤷🏽‍♂️

I remember a time people would have immediately dismissed someone promoting themselves using a thumbnail featuring someone else’s super popular product (IP) without any permission, credential or even proof of purchase to validate whatever their content implies. Slippery? Meet Slope.

Koala is dope. It doesn’t even need this. Elf wouldn’t create this video himself. He didn’t have too. He created Koala. Millions of people illustrate Koala’s brilliance showcasing what it can do. Others like our very own Leo from SFM, Doug and Gav take care to introduce interesting products and let them sink or shine by merit.

Respected reviewers at very least have the relevant gear. For me, purchased and not sponsored but there are some who seem honest while really exploring what people want to know. This was not informative for anyone wanting to know anything about KO2. He’s just chasing KO2 clicks.

This guy is using Elf and clout chasing TE’s trending product to elevate himself. Thirst. I’m not even knocking the hustle. Just observing. No, I do not respect how he went about it though. I’m positive about that part. I respect people that don’t rely on gimmickry. I can tolerate the other stuff but my respect is harder to earn.

The reason I use weird to describe videos like this is because it is apart of an agenda that normalized weird. Now, weird means normal.

This type of video is the new normal. It’s the type of content most “influencers” are being influenced to make. Many of them feel forced to do it. I know some of these people. I helped creat and raised one. I feel bad for her and the younger folks of her generation that think they must give in to it.

Being honest, simple, concise or unique is frowned upon. Nope. Must use Algo face and to clout chase popular trends.

Explore the toxic comment sections. More super wierd behavior. Nasty reactions, insults (like ones we saw upthread) and behaviors have become normalized and happen often everywhere. It’s sooo—-weird.

Once you slide off the slope it gets harder and harder to remember what level ground was. By my estimation, social media pushed humanity off the edge a long time ago. More so, what most humans use it for. What’s the difference between weird and normal behavior now? Rhetorical.

Doesn’t matter if we’re talking gear, politics, love, etc.

Rant over. I’ve surpassed my posting quota for the next 2 years already. I’m going to just slip back behind the curtains and zap the ever persistent chat bots, observe and be entertained as it all plays out.smh

  • The functionality can be replicated, but the workflow and resulting jam sessions are not easily copied by apps. That’s what is totally different when you use these machines.

But I like that he is trying to help people consider that they might not need shiny new things.

I’m sure he could afford them if he wanted. He seems like an adult. It’s like people who own Tesla cars who think others are just jealous and wish they could buy one. That’s not true. There are people who just find it pointless…and that’s okay. Life is a variety of choices.

And goodbye to the weird racist lol…now that I know people get banned, the next day I actually see it happen. Pretty wild!

Man, I was about to put this one in the shopping cart, then I realized 12 buttons.

I’ve been looking for something compact; it doesn’t even have to be this small, but with 16 buttons. BT would be nice, but not necessary. As long as it doesn’t required to be powered. At least 16 buttons with a minimum of 4 banks.
I already have an LP X for more complex and home duties.
Faderfox seems too good for me, plus I’m in the states.
The MIDI Fighter Spectra seems cool, but in the FAQ is says one needs a computer. So I’m confused about why, since it’s class compliant. Moreover, I don’t feel that I need such high quality buttons. Yes, I am triggering samples, but not finger drumming in a true sense.
Any other options you might recommend?

I'm curious why 12 buttons is a problem? Is it just because 16 is the norm, or is there another reason? Honest question.

I'm thinking "But there are only 12 scale tones?" here ...

@HotStrange not suggesting it either but really? I mean if they honor it like that I’ll add it to every purchase and have an accidental water spill every two years! I mean I know they track the activity of warranty but hey, it’s good to know, if I need to use it it works like that… plus my daughter got into my studio and had a field day with my knobs and faders and one is a little “slippery” now where it waivers up and down just 1 degree value so I might have to do it anyway

Last time I went to GameStop the manager helping us suggested to get it and literally told us every 2 years to just break it and have it replaced to keep a new controller every 2 years lol. Not sure if GC is the same but it probably is.

I think I’m gonna make a YouTube channel and create weird clout chasing for click videos showing how much better cooking with an air fryer is to all these people spending so much on grills for their families, brick pizza ovens, cast iron gas stoves with hoods, etc.

In fact, who even needs an air fryer! George Foreman grill for the win!!!lol

    Consider me a subscriber! Lol

That’s likely it. If you have sounds mapped to all 16 spots on koala, 12 wouldn’t really be ideal. For portability this thing is awesome though.

I hadn't even noticed that it was 12 buttons, but yeah, if I were to get something like this to use with Koala, I'd prefer a one-to-one mapping. I also prefer to buy from a local store where I can try things out and feel whether a device or instrument meets the expectations I've built up from reading forums and reviews.

Speaking of my local store, I've seen at least one used (OG) KO has turned up there and maybe more will follow.

Ahh. Thanks for the answer. I was thinking standalone, not in terms of integration with apps.

Does anyone think that the hardware is capable of sending out audio via USB and that it’s coming in a firmware release?

Their official statement was no promises but that they are aware and considering usb audio and resampling in an update.

I think it’s a no brainer but I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

I definitely wanna pick one up, I’m just waiting to see if the QA issues are fixed. Audio over usb and resembling would make it that much better though. Especially audio over usb.

Understandable. If the many groove videos push you over the fence just be sure to grab it from Guitar Center where you can easily exchange or refund if any issues.

There are definitely plenty of updates that would improve KO2 but that’s true for every piece of software and hardware i own. In the meantime, I have an embarrassment of riches in terms of things to create and express myself with.

What a time to be alive. 🔥

+1 plus you add the GC warranty ….your gold

You can drop it out a window on purpose (don’t say you did it on purpose), and they replace it
If you don’t like something you have 15-45 Dey return
    Win win
    What a time indeed

Yep. Extra protection is another great option. 💪🏽

Also, since getting back into hardware, ive been able to drastically cut down my screen time. As such, I’ve noticed great positive impacts to my mental and physical health including but not limited to better vision, better sleep, more focus, less eye floaters (which were driving me nuts) among other things. Im getting older and want to really protect my eyes and mind as best I can.

So far, limiting screen time and returning to my accoustics (woodwinds) and HW has truly been transformative and I can’t really put a price tag on it.

Now this is one of the best arguments for using an OP-1 Field (or any hardware for that matter). Less screen time. More focus on music. :)

For sure. Had a revelation after grabbing a Roland Verselab MV-1 due to my love for Zenbeats. Found myself preferring to use Zen less and MV-1 and the tiny screen more. From there I added a J6 chord synth ($200). Amazing. If you remember, I created the term gamechangier in the Scaler 2 thread some time ago (not sure what happened to that thread btw). While still absolutely ADORE Scaler (and the new Scaler EQ), J6 is soooo much funner. The Juno sound and ability to use it as a small midi controller with pads and knobs is magical. Then I grabbed S1, a 707, an Aerophone and the rest was history. Now hooked on HW.

However, my iPad Pro and iPhone are still very valued participants in my creative workflow. Mostly as sound modules and I don’t have to look at the screen for that.

I’ve learned more about sound design and music theory in the past year then I had in the previous decade spent mostly as an iPad/ios producer/musician.

Much of this due simply to a clearer mind. I stepped away from so much screen time, including social media and internet and I can’t even express nor quantify the amount of fog lifted. Hard to do this effectively if your creativity also depends on screen time.

Exactly! Before social media I found myself a lot more creative. Over the years my creativity fluctuates. Sometimes I'm good at shutting out social media for a while. Othertimes I'm addicted to it like a mushroom junkie, lol, and then when I go to create during that day, nothing comes out. 😂

Also good points here. I think that Michael could afford these things, and he does have hardware, including an op1. The videos are basically rhetorical. They're not trying to be balanced, they're performative. He genuinely is playing a role of anti influencer in these gas therapy vids. And then in his 'gear simp' videos (😂) he just enjoys the gear, that's playing another role.

But I can see that many people would prefer a more balanced style, and with so many influencers taking on the anti-influencer mantle, it's also right and understandable that they are put in the spotlight to some extent, and their true motivations explored.

Hopefully, if Hegel is right, all this is part of a kind of dialectic. First we had the uncritical influencers, then the anti-influencer. What we need is something mature and balanced. Will we get it? Unlikely, apart from outliers here and there. But one can dream.

I don't agree. The rest of the videos I've watched of his are useful and informative for some people. You're just not among the targeted audience by a long shot.

Saw probably 10 videos from him ... it's all the time same story about trying to convince people that buying HW is snob pose and you can do all the same and more with free software .. which is kinda pointless, if you want to play with HW in 90% cases is not because you can't do same with SW but simply because you want to use HW because it inspires you. I use both HW and SW and i am not biased towards any of those, but i really dislike content of this guy, his attidude, what and how he is saying in his videos, he literally spreads missinformation and pretends his subjective bias is objective reality. I simply don't like it.

@rs2000 said If you like the PO style small buttons and want something compact talking to your phone over BT MIDI, check this one out: https://thisisnoiseinc.com/pages/noise-machine-nmsve

Man, I was about to put this one in the shopping cart, then I realized 12 buttons.

I'm curious why 12 buttons is a problem? Is it just because 16 is the norm, or is there another reason? Honest question.

I'm thinking "But there are only 12 scale tones?" here ...

Yeah same here. Unfortunately the guitar center closest to me had to stop leaving smaller devices out due to their tendency rob suspiciously get up and walk away lol. So can’t really test any of them sadly. Luckily they had a really nice return policy.

Have you seen the Donner and Synidio ones? Both under $100 with usb c and has 16 pads plus knobs and faders.

To me disc creatively is largely due to the lack of experiences. People expect

Interesting. 🤔 Can you expound upon that a bit more? 🙂

Haha, sorry. I started typing this on my pro 10.5 that’s been sent for battery replacement and they totally butchered it so now the screen is unresponsive when I type. That’s why I’ve abandoned writing of the message but didn’t realise it went off 😧

Anyhow, the idea was, or shall I say from observing my own self I’ve noticed that when my creativity levels dip that means that my lived experiences bucket is empty. Which basically means that I need to get out more, meet people, hear stories, travel etc, etc.

So perhaps getting new gear tickles the same brain area. I don’t know, and I don’t know whether it works the same for everyone. But I prefer to experience life outside rather that buy new gear as the former seems to refresh my creative cells better. Although with all prices going up I’m not sure which approach is more affordable. 😬

All we need is a calculator skin for Koala!

    Haha, for sure!

I don’t know everyone else’s feelings about this but I’d pay for decent Koala skins. Like fake 3D etc.

I know the background can be changed but that pink and light blue have both grown a bit old now.

The attention economy is a real thing. Attention is a limited resource for everyone, whether you have ADD or not. It is not surprising that you can’t create after a social media binge like that.

Exactly. I need a social media cleanse instead, lol.

I have 2 iPads: one that I move around with me and the other permanently tethered to my controllers,, interface etc. the latter is hardly ever used for internet browsing, gaming or whatever. This way I keep focus but I guess it won’t work for everyone as not everyone will have the mental discipline or two iPads to make it work.

Also, someone’s mentioned earlier that unlike with hardware, they never finish projects on iPads.

I honestly find it hard to believe. In fact with hardware it’s even harder to finish complete tasks because their more targeted towards one specific task or area while iPad can contain any number of different tools to finish a project.

yeah mental discipline is big problem for me :-)) realized that during last 2-3 months it went down with me .. always I grab ipad, I end either watching YT videos, discussing cryptocurrencies on X or watching Netflix :((( For this reason i am considering to sell iPad and buy something like Polyend Tracker Mini .. to have portable device where i really can't do anything else than just music :)))

Yes, but won’t you still have the phone around you, providing those useful distraction services?

I think terminating your ISP agreement might be more effective 😛

I know, I was kidding. Terminating the internet connection feels like such a life or death situation even for me and I don’t use it for work much! I have small kids though. That’s my excuse at least ;)
