how negative criticism can affect positive change
With the old OP in mind and I don’t want to encourage negative attention ….., so how would you go about making a decision for your birthday. I had a $2500 budget and that’s for next year because I turn a very old decade , and it’s a collective gift between my family members so it has to be the right one. I want it, but do I deserve it ? I know Jim and hotstrange do but do I? I know Tarekith and echo opera have one , but should I?
Price isn’t an issue due to the payment plan and my wife taking care of it with my folks over a years time: they said just be sure it’s what I want. I do! She just literally said you suck when she heard my breakdown, and I don’t get it lmao :lol rofl I really don’t
What would you do if the person giving you the greatest synth station and jewel of the synth world said basically “are you sure you are getting something you ‘are good enough for’?” And now I’m like shit, should I just get something else man?
Hotstrange, Jim, DM, grav, echo , wim, Paulie, LL, geo, Anyone who listens to my stuff or anyone? What are your thoughts ?
(And don’t tell me the use what you have spiel, mr I can do everything and anything , you know who I mean sir , lol , I was told pick a gift from $40-2500 , and make sure it’s final answer as financing will go into effect collectively starting this month for first payment so it ships and arrive early next year)
I know I’ll love it and make use of it so why am I hesitating? Do I suck and is this machine too much becuse I thought the workflow was perfect for my current minimalist workflow
Thank you
Comments
Firstly I would suggest telling your wife how you feel about what she said and not letting it fester lol
Secondly I think it’s natural to hesitate a bit over something that expensive, even if you’re not the only buying it. As you said, you know you’ll use it and love and that’s all that matters. It will be yours anyway and you don’t owe anyone anything from it except yourself.
Luckily not tooo many ladies seem to be around so I think this’ll slip under the radar: she was going through a rough period at that time to put it nicely , i told her that was not appreciated at all, she said “look if it’s a hobby that’s fine just say it’s a hobby but don’t pretend like you can sell it” … mind you I have said in the past I “hoped” one day to sell some beats, but I think that was taken too “demandingly” - almost like I felt, not to get psychological , but “don’t mention it or ask me to listen and be involved to give you feedback unless your doing this to commercialize it”which I get but don’t agree with or find supportive . We spoke and her reply was as I said, “just make sure it’s what you want.”
Is this a convince myself to buy it thread guys hahaha?
I’d never accept a gift from someone with that kind attitude, no matter how much I wanted it. That isn’t a gift if it comes with expectations, guilt trip, whatever. Gifts are to bestow joy and express love, they shouldn’t be turned into some weird kind of passive aggressive statement.
I’d give it a pass for now and wait for another opportunity, myself.
That’s my concern. I don’t want it to be a reminder to instigate an issue if nothing “comes of it”…
and with someone else telling me privately I really had no business involving myself with such a high end piece when my only units are a used Volca drum and Roland s-1. That was discouraging too to be honest , it didn’t help me second guessing . I see their point but it’s still a bit extreme
That was my other gut reaction.
But … I’ve said too much already. I was only expressing how I would feel if I was in the situation you describe. Please don’t put any weight behind my words. You’re you and only you know the situation.
Let me ask a provocative question: Why a workstation when all you need is in your hands?
Or is it that you want a quality keybed for playing?
This wouldn't cost you $2500.
please by all means @wim , you were honest to an open and honest question and conversation : please don’t feel like you overstepped in anyway whatsoever. I agree with your points. Hence my reticence and why I posed the question in such a frame
Plus that guy really got under my skin when he was really going in on my critique: 1) my use of synthesis is either exaggeratedly over the top or stagnantly boring (2) my drums need a lot more dynamics (duh we all know that ) (3) what would I be doing with a synthesizer that is more expensive than my entire studio (minus the amp) ? (4) what did I possibly think I could do with an op1F that I couldn’t or already do now - that didn’t help the pros list
And @rs2000 basically echoed the last point … which does leave me a little perplexed.
All I can say is I can list what I loved and wanted about the op1F that I told a couple of friends
“I wanted an all in 1 solution, that is also independent of iOS and auv3. I didn’t know the op1 and opz did it all but when I saw Cuckoo videos I was hooked.
I wanted the op-z because it had more editable or however you want to put it midi. The transposition is a really cool bonus. But also being able to edit midi on the fly is what really makes the op z have a slight advantage
aside from that, when I discovered the op1F has
1) multiple synth and synth engines
2) multiple Fx - Including sugarbytes like FSU encoder stuff, tape effects
3) stereo drum kits that are great
4) stereo sampling
5) radio transmission and reception
6) usb c in /out for midi and audio
7) all in one environment , meaning I don’t need to port it out if I don’t want to; but I have the ability to keep it all on the virtual 4 tracks or bounce them out to Logic etc
8) multiple sequencers for fun
and now it had velocity sensitivity, so it is a self contained unit”
But your question is the hard truth isn’t it? The answer is in light of everything , I don’t know . At first it was clear …
I think Wim made some good points here as well. Probably best to sit and really hash things out before involving a piece of gear that expensive that could also have the potential to cause some arguments. It could be a misunderstanding on both sides but regardless it’s something worth talking about. Only you know your situation and what’s truly best. All we can do is offer our best advice.
It may be that she’s just not aware of what it does and exactly why you want it. Explaining that could help clear things up.
Sounds like she might have been angry or annoyed to some extent at the time. Partners who care about someone generally look to be more constructive than "you suck" in my opinion. Although, different strokes for different folks I guess.
Actually , I didn’t explain what it did and what my goals were. I just said it was a piece of synth gear since she’s not a musician so i didn’t think to expound. While I still agree with most of the cons at this point, I think dialogue should start with where you are suggesting.first and foremost. Thanks man. Very good idea
(Yes she was definitely in a bad mood. )
No problem, I hope all goes well my friend.
I only mention that because there have been a couple of more pricey musical purchases I’ve made where the wife wasn’t fully on board until I actually explained what it did, what I wanted to do with it, and why I thought it would be beneficial for me. That helped her get on board.
I'm not saying that purchasing hardware is generally a bad thing.
If you're going to have a good time with it more than once then it can be a very fun experience!
And it's not always about the features alone, it's sometimes more about how to access them.
That's the major difference in using hardware - for me.
I wonder, is the comment that you "suck" at playing an instrument, so you lack as a musician? Or can't you play an instrument anyway and is the stuff you compose or program in a sequencer below par (in the ears of others).
The op1F is a very interesting piece of gear, but if you program the same stuff on it, nothing has improved. I think if that was my problem, I would get frustrated or disappointed pretty fast with the op1F.
according to kenny werner none of us "suck". on the other hand i've often felt that i "sucked" but then i practiced and then i didn't suck. so it doesn't matter even if you did "suck" on that particular day, because after that day you definitely dont suck.
but, go with kenny werner: you are perfect!
in my past relationships i've received the absolute least supportive words from partners. i don't know what that is about. yuck.
Thanks for the replies
To put it in the broader context it went something like “listen to this new track I worked on”
15 seconds in “no, enough” and she hit stop
“Not even a minute ?”
“No because you take one amazing riff or idea and then you throw on your synthesizers and start f’n it all up”
“What about the music itself ?”
“You know you are a great writer but what good is it if you can’t use your instruments you keep saying you need for your sound and those apps you bought? What are they doing ?”
“First of all I told you I moved to the drum machine and hardware, because I couldn’t work on the iPad after all was said and done, second I told you I wanted to move back into the studio setting”
“ ok and what change has that had? The music still is too much (too many layers , too many progressions she meant”
“Ok well I’m trying to figure out the workflow using dRambo and Logic “
“If you haven’t figured it out, what are you doing, what have you been doing this whole time?”
“ I just told you working on my sound, and how to integrate it …that’s why I did this, listen”
…..”no, you suck, I’m sorry but you have great ideas, and you butcher them to death”
That’s the gist of it (and fwiw she did apologize for it and said later “you just can’t take my criticism when I tell you to take parts out when you ask me my opinion. So either take my criticisms and apply them or don’t ask me to listen to something that you know I can’t stomach”)
So don’t worry guys I’m not completely dejected recounting the story with the details , it was just I guess waking up to the “shocking review” in mind made me vent and try to see what others may have thought
Thanks again for the input - it helps me think it through
Machiavelli move: take the maximum budget, blow it all on modular synth gear. Keeps its value better than software or computers, so you can sell it later if it goes that way, and in the meantime side steps the whole ‘become famous’ argument. Because, unless you are Wendy Carlos or Lisa Bella Donna, you ain’t getting famous with this stuff…
Also:
this is a very good point. reverb.com buys do keep their value
Yeah but you've opened up the Pandora's box of eurocrack lol. Don't listen @dreamcartel, this road leads to financial wrack and ruin, divorce and then more financial wrack and ruin 😂
Sorry to read about this problem though. If there are financial issues causing background pressure in the relationship, it's hard to imagine that getting a $2k+ piece of gear after having already bought a bunch of iOS stuff, then a bunch of desktop stuff, is going to solve them. Your significant other might be right about your music, or not, I have genuinely no idea.
Although everyone can maybe afford the monthly payments, would it be a burden on them? Or do they have plenty of money to spare? The answer to that would be important, I think.
I feel that the best thing would be to take a raincheck on buying anything for now. Nothing to be gained by rushing. Ultimately though I think it is very hard for us to give you advice on such a deep topic, as we don't really know you, your partner, your overall situation etc. I would think you'd get a much more valid answer discussing this properly with people who know you and her well.
I wouldn't stress that much. My wife likes a lot the tracks where I'm playing piano (she has a bit of a classical music background) and goes instantly "meh" when synths pop up. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.
But once in a while I come up with a beautiful and seamless synth/piano composition which we both like and I say to myself - good job!
On the other side my 4 years old monster is just "papa I don't like this" the moment any of my tracks starts, so..
Thanks svetlovska but besides Gavin’s addiction point I was told pick ONE thing for your 40th birthday. “You can pick anything you want, up to $2500 incl tax” I wanted the op1 for a year, basically since meeting echo.
But i thought it might be too much
I FIRST opted for the op-z bundle. She said “are you sure, that is a lot less than the other one” so I asked if I could get a couple things with it like unrelated to music since the budget was 5x, and she said “one gift; make it count” and I get her point. She wants me to stop being cheap with myself and go big for once because it’s a collective gift she is staked 50% for, the rest my family is chipping in. So I understand you can’t divide payments of many items, it’s inconsiderate of me really
Im sort or glad she did because after talking to a bunch more users and checking online about QC, I also consulted them and they all said IF they could’ve gotten the op1F they would’ve despite the opz cool form factor - so that’s where I’m at.
Talking it out actually helped me not stress @unlink so thank you and @Gavinski i appreciate your pragmatic view ; your right, it could be the recent financial stress we had to overcome with supplemental income could play a role in the decision. I think with what you laid out and hotstrange suggested , and others, it’s good to talk to my wife and then after to everyone since it’s a family effort
And I think there is consensus about the difference between people who write proper tracks, and people who just like to noodle with synthesizers and studio gear.
Maybe you are part of that second group? I know for myself I do. My goal is to learn to play an instrument (guitar) better and better, and don't lose valuable practice time with creating some dull tracks. I also think it is too much for one person, write the music, play the music, sound design, record, mix, master.
Well I’m a classically trained musician, I used to be much more into instrument only (analog) guitar and stuff. But my interest in synthesizers peaked with drambo and hasn’t let up since. I am a “serious” musician who had problems with being a home studio producer. That’s my real deficiency. Weird thing is a lot of people love my old music and like my new experimental stuff I am still working on. So I hope to make my real musicianship finally hindrance free due to mastering the one instrument combined with interest. Ehhhh who knows. You all give a lot to ponder
TL;DR: i have very simple and straighforward rule.
either person's behavior sucks in certain circumstances, but person doesn't.
or it's time to make that other insignificant.
It’s true : even I have my moments but overall she’s alright. We have a bunch of kids and she has her own issues. I have to give both sides benefit of the doubt. I mean She’s a tough cookie BUT she did offer me a $2500 gift! At the same time I’ve said “I suck” to her so I shouldn’t have put myself down like that and even show self doubt. - even self deprecating humor!
Now if she didn’t take care of the house and kids, AND she said I suck and can’t get the op1f, she’d be outta there yesterday
Also I did talk to her and she said she wouldn’t be harsh even if it’s that time
I think showing some self doubt is fine! You can't play a role with someone close like that, you have to be able to be yourself. Main thing is to be able to talk things through, and sounds like you can both manage that, so that's excellent at least.
plus, she did say you were great at X, but sucked at Y, so albeit the harsh bit is harsh, the positive bit is glowing. medal, mission
I didn’t see it that way. You’re right man!!! Thank you!! That is so true, the more important opinion was between the lines. Good eye for pointing out what I clearly didn’t account for so she doesn’t think that i suck really really ! Ha (I’m going to remember that)[ I just need to get my production up] like that track is produced by a professional engineer, I wrote and played it
Thanks Gav. You really are an empathetic, compassionate and thoughtful person man. I appreciate your kindness

I feel it’s generally not a good idea to share creations with family and friends. Share it only with people who seek that sort of stuff out.
Suggestion: Instead of investing in costly hardware, invest in yourself. Take music lessons. If you take lessons and demonstrate a willingness to develop your craft for a lifetime, you’ll be doing double duty.
Not sure about the wife issue, but I would hesitate to call anything my be all and end all dream DAW without using it first. Not saying you shouldn’t get it, but maybe try and approach it a bit more pragmatically and without the assumption this will be the only piece of gear you ever need the rest of your life.
What happens if they release an OP-2 for instance?
Also, I have a rule that says if I have to ask other people if I should buy something, then it means maybe I’m not ready to pull the trigger. “I” should KNOW if new kit is really going to bring something to the table with my music making before I drop the coin.
