I only read the thread at the beginning. @jwmmakerofmusic is getting the OP-1 Fields ?

    He sure is, ROFL!

So I guess @dreamcartel finally decided to give away the OP rather then keeping it.

Nah fam, he's going to get his soon. @HotStrange is the one who decided to not get the OP-1 Field after giving away his OG OP-1, lol.

    Pls don’t remind me 😫

    Lol!

Think I may be physically attracted to that screen holy shit 🤩

Okay bro, sounds like you and your wife need couple's counselling. 😂

I will still probably get it eventually, just not on a rush is all 😉

Mmm hmm, sure, yeah, lol. (I'm just joshing you mate of course.)

😂😂😂 if I buy the Field this week we will definitely need counseling lmao

Now this coming spring is a different story 🌞

Oh man, just gotta get through the Winter first. ;) Some pro tips by the way - you'll need a USB-C to USB cord, some manner of laptop/desktop computer for file management and Dropbox (or any cloud storage) access (just financed a cheaper Windows one through Amazon, it arrives tomorrow), a pair of wired headphones (or a Bluetooth/wired headphone hybrid), and a protective case.

Have all already except the laptop, even still have my old op-1 case as long as it’s the same dimensions.

That said, with my old op-1 I never even attempted to access the files. I just sampled directly into it over usb, so that wouldn’t be a huge rush for me. You can even update the firmware with an ipad. Or on the original you could anyway. I’ll probably mostly keep that same workflow and just save up additionally for a computer down the road.

@echoopera confirmed that I won't be able to access files on the Field via the iPad at all (so I'm not sure how firmware updates would work via the iPad). The Windows laptop I financed is normally a $1100 laptop, but was on sale for $315. 512gb internal storage (more than enough storage for managing files from and to the OP-1 Field, such as stems, drums, etc) and 12gb ram (which is far more than I'll ever need for simple file management). Not sure if it has a USB-C port, but it has a regular USB port. I have the USB-C to USB cables on the way as we speak for simple charging and for connecting to the laptop.

The reason I went with Windows is it seems I don't need a utility (like on a Mac) to access the files. Just connect the OP-1 Field, pop it into disc mode, and voila. File access.

Gotcha. I remember reading they did leave that part out of this one. Maybe it’ll come in a firmware update later on down the road. Ah well, connecting to someone’s desktop for updates occasionally won’t be a big deal (and the wife will probably have her gaming computer done by then anyway). As for the files, I never used that with the original OP-1 and being able to send audio over usb means there’s a work around.

My main use case is/was sampling all my weird iOS synths into the OP-1 or using the super cool sequencers for my iOS synths and vice versa. It’s amazing for that.

This is super true! OP-1 Field can send and receive MIDI. But for my first EP with it, the only time I'll use iOS is to record direct from the OP-1 Field into Logic Pro and master each track with Mastering Assistant. It'll be my "learning EP". :)

Ooo so you’re planning on just using the OP-1 without iOS? Or just purely for the learning EP?

For me, the way to really make it shine was combining the 2. It turns it into what is essentially the world’s most powerful groovebox haha. It also opens up doors for all those cool apps that don’t have any connectivity because you can just record into the OP-1 :) that’s why I ended up never really deleting all those apps like a lot of people do.

The built in mic is also a lot fun because you can just sample the world around you. Granted the iPad does this just a well but the OP-1 adds the magic sauce 😆

A good video about the OP-1 Field that is well-balanced, talking about some of the upsides and downsides while he also demonstrates how he uses his OP-1 Field. And it doesn't come off as some kind of "influencer video" like Anderton's Synths, Key and Tech. 😂 (The less said about Anderton, the better.)

What he said in his video is good advice for recording on any gear, be it an iPhone or an OP1F.

I didn't think of it like that, but you're absolutely correct! 🙂

I wouldn’t say it has terrible integration with the iPad. It does suck you can’t access the files properly (though an app existed for the original that allowed that at some point) but you can still send and receive midi AND audio over usb which is more than some other modern devices offer and pretty much on par with most everything else.

File integration for pulling out stems individually should definitely happen though. You can work around it by muting channels and recording one tape track at a time but that’s less than ideal.

The built in mic is also a lot fun because you can just sample the world around you. Granted the iPad does this just a well but the OP-1 adds the magic sauce 😆

    😂🤣 Magic sauce.

    Bwahaha 😂

Congrats on the purchase! Will be keen to hear how this love affair evolves over time and whether the op1 field will really turn out to be 'the one' 👻

Definitely a bummer it doesn't have better iOS integration.

I thought Echo Opera mentioned explicitly that there is currently no audio out over usb at the moment, no? Only midi. Or maybe I misunderstood, which is more likely, as that seems like a really major omission.
Edit: nope that's the KO-II, got confused

So I guess @dreamcartel finally decided to give away the OP rather then keeping it.

Nah fam, he's going to get his soon. @HotStrange is the one who decided to not get the OP-1 Field after giving away his OG OP-1, lol.

Just for the untitled learning EP. I want to learn my OP-1 Field first (although I'm swiftly getting the hang of it) before using it in conjunction with the iPad (outside of recording into Logic Pro that is).

I know a couple of people have mentioned that regarding the newer KO II (midi only). From what I’ve read it still has audio over usb just no native way to access the iPads file system. The original OP-1 and OPZ send both audio and midi so that would be a very strange omission.

Nah fam, he's going to get his soon. @HotStrange is the one who decided to not get the OP-1 Field after giving away his OG OP-1, lol.

Just for the untitled learning EP. I want to learn my OP-1 Field first (although I'm swiftly getting the hang of it) before using it in conjunction with the iPad (outside of recording into Logic Pro that is).

    I feel ya on that.

We shall see indeed mate, lol. If it doesn't work out like I expected, I'll still use my OP-1 Field for other uses like as a MIDI controller, or just something to concoct new ideas which I can produce on the iPad. But I have a feeling all will work out well.

Definitely a bummer it doesn't have better iOS integration.

Or ar least optimal iOS integration. Hopefully I can record audio into Logic on my iPad via USB-C. Then I can use my new laptop to manage the files and all that sh-t. :)

Unless the downgraded from the previous version you should be all good. I recorded my original in Cubasis and GarageBand plenty of times :)

I asked TE. :) Surely the OP-1 Field can do it. If not, at least I got a laptop and Dropbox.

I would imagine so. If they left off a key feature on a much more expensive upgraded device they’d have to be crazy haha. I think I would just not buy one out of spite if that’s the case 😆

Lol! I'll be sure to let you know. :)

Definitely a bummer it doesn't have better iOS integration.

I thought Echo Opera mentioned explicitly that there is currently no audio out over usb at the moment, no? Only midi. Or maybe I misunderstood, which is more likely, as that seems like a really major omission.

I know a couple of people have mentioned that regarding the newer KO II (midi only). From what I’ve read it still has audio over usb just no native way to access the iPads file system. The original OP-1 and OPZ send both audio and midi so that would be a very strange omission.

Ah yeah, sorry, brain fart... Too much discussion of different devices in the same threads I guess

  • You can definitely send audio over USB-C from the OP-1 to iOS device.

Just for the untitled learning EP. I want to learn my OP-1 Field first (although I'm swiftly getting the hang of it) before using it in conjunction with the iPad (outside of recording into Logic Pro that is).

    I feel ya on that.

No need to apologize, I only corrected just in case future readers come to this thread for info. Definitely a lot of talk about a dozen different devices in this one 😂

  • Does AUM afford any advantage when using the op1F to record into iOS? Like for instance, can you send the four tracks to 4 aum channels separately, and then those 4 tracks out to Cubasis ?

What else I’m asking is does AUM allow you to access or utilize functions on the op1F you couldn’t otherwise just find in the DAW?

(Saw a video about using it and was confused if the guy didn’t know )

  • Was surprised to see Music Radar do an article on PlayPM’s vid on the KO II. Overall they agreed with him, but they added this caveat: “we feel that playpm might also be misunderstanding the reason that many people will purchase the KO II, or any hardware sampler or synthesizer, for that matter. For some of us, making music on a computer or smartphone is simply less enjoyable. There's something innately satisfying about the experience of making music by pushing buttons and turning knobs that software can't recreate.”

Seems though that they agree with him that the OP1F is not worth the money:
“Whether that experience is worth spending hundreds of dollars to achieve is up to you. In the case of the $299 KO II, it may well be, but when it comes to pricier products like the OP-1 field, we're inclined to echo Playpm's argument that you're better off keeping your $1999 and treating your Gear Acquisition Syndrome with a healthy dose of common sense and free music software.”

    Thanks for the replies

To put it in the broader context it went something like “listen to this new track I worked on”
15 seconds in “no, enough” and she hit stop
    “Not even a minute ?”
“No because you take one amazing riff or idea and then you throw on your synthesizers and start f’n it all up”
“What about the music itself ?”
“You know you are a great writer but what good is it if you can’t use your instruments you keep saying you need for your sound and those apps you bought? What are they doing ?”
“First of all I told you I moved to the drum machine and hardware, because I couldn’t work on the iPad after all was said and done, second I told you I wanted to move back into the studio setting”
“ ok and what change has that had? The music still is too much (too many layers , too many progressions she meant”
“Ok well I’m trying to figure out the workflow using dRambo and Logic “
“If you haven’t figured it out, what are you doing, what have you been doing this whole time?”
“ I just told you working on my sound, and how to integrate it …that’s why I did this, listen”
…..”no, you suck, I’m sorry but you have great ideas, and you butcher them to death”

That’s the gist of it (and fwiw she did apologize for it and said later “you just can’t take my criticism when I tell you to take parts out when you ask me my opinion. So either take my criticisms and apply them or don’t ask me to listen to something that you know I can’t stomach”)

So don’t worry guys I’m not completely dejected recounting the story with the details , it was just I guess waking up to the “shocking review” in mind made me vent and try to see what others may have thought

Thanks again for the input - it helps me think it through

I’m a bit late but I feel represented here.
Your wife was too blunt and I’m sure it was hurtful. My partner doesn’t understand how I can enjoy looping the same stuff for 10 minutes while I Eq or compress. And I get it, it’s mad and hard to understand.
That said. Doesn’t she have a point behind the not-too-delicate comment?. I played my partner my last song. When it got to this really interesting part I had done where the tempo goes down and there’s a really interesting moving atomosphere… she was bored. And she expressed it very clearly. But that part is so good, it’s the most interesting thing in the song!.
I took it out to test. The song was a million times better, more cohesive. That part was nice but the song didn’t need it.
Being the devils advocate here… they might not know music but they’re probably better “listeners” than you, we’re extremely biased. So maybe it’s true that there’s too many layers and you’re fucking it up… What if you listen to her, make her a part of it and thank her for making the song better with her comments?. If that’s the case… in my experience if someone tells you there’s too much going it’s probably true. I wouldn’t say the opposite is true, they never say “it’s too simple”.
And no, they don’t understand why we need all those gadgets. Because we don’t!. Just like I dont understand why she needs more fashion items, she just likes them.
Good luck, I hope you enjoy your present!.

Nope. Never said that about the OP-1. Audio over USB works just fine. The new EP-133 only supports MIDI over USB though so maybe that’s what you read.

    Cheers.

Ahhhh, okay. Sometimes I misread things, but thankfully now I know I can send audio to my iPad via USB-C. Phew. :)

    https://www.musicradar.com/news/teenage-engineering-ep-133-free

This latter one I don't agree with from my own personal experience. Believe me, I've tried everything else , including buying an M1 iPad Pro 12.9", iPad Mini 6, and my new iPhone Pro Max 14, new workflows in AUM and Koala Sampler and other apps, etc. Two things I found out after over a year and a half of this (and to be honest, longer actually since before the OP-1 Field was released)...

    1. I spent money I on iOS devices I probably should've saved (save for buying the 14 Pro Max, due to my other iPhone breaking).

    2. It doesn't matter how much limitations you place on yourself in your DAW or how faithfully you try to recreate the workflow with free/paid plugins. After playing around with the OP-1 Field yesterday, I can confirm that nothing can recreate the experience of using an OP-1 Field (and og OP-1 let's be real here). Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to you. (To me it's a good thing, lol. Haven't made anything of substance in the OP-1 Field yet, it's been less than 24 hours lol, but I'm having a blast learning how to use it! I've picked up on so many shortcuts and workflow ideas. I suspect tomorrow (Thurs) is when I'll be "brave enough" to make something).

Not sure since I haven't tried to record anything from the OP-1 Field to iPad yet. :)

  • Daaang, my new Windows laptop is MASSIVE! It literally has a 15.6" screen. RIght now I'm busy installing FL Studio 21 on it. This is an unprecedented development in my OP-1 Field story. I may relearn to produce music on a PC, although mastering will still be done in LP4i's mastering assistant.

For a minute, I was thinking of buying a touchscreen pc laptop to run reason 12+ on…but never pulled the trigger…
Who knows, what the future holds…laughing out loud
I could see using the OP1F as a controller for iPad and travelling with it….
It’s not the device…it’s that dang price tag I don’t like…it’s too much for me to want to pay for that device…but you never know if an opportunity arises, I may plunge.

Congrats on your new device, I am sure we will see your triumphs and tribulations with it. I am eager to see what you make in the near future!

  • There are mint condition OP-1F's on reverb all the time for $1500, that's where I got mine and what I paid for it. Makes it a lot easier to make that jump to a new workflow.

(my OP-1F thoughts video should be posted later today too for those of you who said you were interested in that. I'll start a new thread for it in thyme hardware forum though.)

Thank you so much mate. I'll definitely post my journeys in Creations once I get started on my deep dive.

My laptop doesn't have a touch screen, but it was only $315, 12gb ram, nice processor, and 512gb storage (more than enough for the simple tasks).
