  • Question to those who have the app: do the echoes feed into the reverb, or is the main input the only signal being reverbed?

I see you can mix echo with reverb using the mode selector, just checking what that reverb signal actually is.

that's still something very hard to get on spot itb.

Finding them is hard, but apparently it’s just as hard to find the right kind of tape to replace worn tape if you already have one.

The right tape is easy to find and lasts a long time.

    Yep.

It's the Space Echo units themselves that are not cheap though. On Reverb.com the prices are all over the map, but it looks like around $1,000 is fairly common.

I’ll search for it when I have time, but I remember an interview with Wata from Boris who said that she struggled to find replacement tape for hers that still retained the character of the original.

Apparently not all tape is created equal, and there are few articles I got from a quick Google search that shows you can’t just use any replacement tape and expect one to sound the same.

    i doubt

I do remember them well, and I would say yes. Certain tapes recorded with better fidelity than others - you could definitely record the same source on two different tapes and get very different results.

Been waiting quite a while for this one. Bought!

Did u use it alerady? How it’s playing?

Tested all of the presets and no problems whatsoever. I did notice they significantly slimmed down the UI graphics, so keeping everything light must be critical to good performance here, I'm guessing.

How much better is it compared to the GSI app? I’ll likely buy it after Christmas when I get paid again.

I didn’t buy the GSI because I was waiting for this one. Compared to the Space Echo in MixBox, this one has more knobs for twiddling.

Thanks. Doug’s demo was great. Definitely think it sounds better and less harsh than the GSI so I’m gonna take the dive I believe.

This has more controls than the GS-201, almost like its desktop version. I refunded the latter because the hiss couldn't be turned down, so hard to A-B. Both these sound better than RE1 if memory serves me correctly, Outer Space being the most fun because it has more midi controls.

In what way do they sound better than RE-1? If you haven't used RE-1 in a while, I'd be interested to know if you still feel there is a significant difference in sound quality.

Totally subjective, I just remember that RE-1 disappointed me. It might be because it was the first digital version of the unit i tried. With Outer Space I instantly fell into a 30 minute dub session, where the GSi variant kept my initial interest for even shorter at first try.

With fx apps that require little learning I refund pretty fast, lastly with FF Pro-R 2 after a-b-ing with its predecessor for five minutes. More functions, but the same character isn't worth 40 EUR to me.

Doesn’t every app require a “little learning”? Do you refund them all then?

This is my first space-echo tape effect, since I’m a very firm Binson echorec fan. But I haven’t found a binson emulation on iOS that I love, yet.

There are 2 delays based on it in MiRack. If you want to check them out it’s Nysthi Echorec and Nysthi Jira Jira

Thanks for the reminder. I keep forgetting I can just treat mirack as a simple effect rather than a full blown modular wall of gear.

  • For anyone asking, it rules. It sounds so good and the extra features are so awesome

By the way, if anyone had already purchased the desktop version of Outer Space (for Mac, PC or Linux) like I did, you can get the version 2 upgrade for no additional cost. Yes, it is a separate software install, it is technically not an upgrade of your existing software.

Just login to your account on AudioThing.net and you'll see the version 2 upgrade waiting for you under the "Account" tab. Download and install it, then open it as a plugin in your DAW of choice, enter your account info when it prompts you, and then you'll have the new version for free. Pretty cool.

RE1 doesn't work for me since updating iPadOS, so will buy this. I probably would have anyway though.

I’ve also had issues with beloved RE1. There were a couple TestFlight updates a month or so ago, but haven’t been pushed out to public build, no did they fix the bugs I was having with it.

Sent the dev a note about it. If RE1 is on the back burner for now, might have to pick this up.

Anyone with RE1 and have picked this up already… got any feedback on real world differences?

I’ve too had issues recently with my beloved RE1. Loading it on a Logic track would make the track completely silent. Thought it was only Logic but seems to related to iOS update?.
Also wondering about how RE1 and SpaceEcho compare sound wise. If the spring reverb on SpaceEcho is as good as it seems it’s definitely a strong plus, I loved Lunar Lander (sadly discontinued) precisely for the reverb. On the other hand I think I might prefer the interface of RE1. I don’t like the way the “tape heads” are implemented on SpaceEcho, where you have to select a mode on the big know for them to be active, seems redundant.

I think the UA one very slightly tops it in the sound of the spring reverb and the tape emulation, but just a hint. I like this one more due to the versatility, all the ways to modulate and the new touch features really let you experiment with it live in a really fun way.

I’m not surprised that it’s expensive, but prior to being able to buy just about anything online it seems like finding the right supplier wasn’t quite as easy.

From the comments people have made, it sounds like Outer Space probably has better saturation and emulation of the lo-fi aspects of tape (no idea how much better as I haven’t seen comments from anyone that has compared them in a session) and it has a spring reverb which RE-1 does not.

  • Gotcha, thanks for the insight. I guess that's where the Springs module gets in the action...

Check out Doug’s latest @thesoundtestroom video - I think his tweaking of sounds really shows its versatility. Just finished the video and going to buy it and play around with some sounds for the next hour or four.

  • OK, this thing is very, very cool. I have been putting it on all kinds of apps and it sounds so good - so much tweakability.

I don’t have things set up right now to play a guitar through it, but once I have moved my mixer and replugged everything I’m going to try that next.

Really makes me think I also need to get the desktop version too.
