I've had the same thing. If I have, say, a podcast playing whilst using XP4N, the volume button stays controlling the podcast app. Quitting the podcast app doesn't bring back the volume button shutter function, but force quitting and restarting XP4N then usually does.
If the action button worked as the shutter that would be even more awesomerer.
Same issue I keep running into re: the volume buttons suddenly not working.
I have uploaded a version to Apple which hopefully alleviates the Volume Keys issue.
Apple doesn't allow reading the keys directly (only they can do that). Instead I'm watching the volume level and if it changes (up or down) while the app is in the foreground I know that a volume key have been pressed. It's a bit hacky, but it's the best I can do.
However, I suspect that in the cases where the keys stop working the system has messed up the audio session so the levels no longer change and I'm not getting any notifications. It's hard to diagnose without full access to the system level stuff...
A few reflections on the way home from the market along the canal today… I did get a few slowdowns, might have been because I was locking the phone with the app open and then reopening it, dunno, but it was delayed switching lenses and films, and stopped displaying the finished previews, even lagging to the point where I got a shot of my foot after I thought I’d taken the image… 15 pro max so no slouch of a device…
Bram, on the contrary, my brother, it is delighting me, and has done so since the beginning of this thread! It was an Instabuy, as are virtually all of your apps.
Photography is my main passion in life. But… at 75, and with both psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis, I am always concerned with ways to simplify and/or clarify the “shutter button” experience on the iPhone.
I use a Kiwi Foto HG-BT1 hand grip which helps enormously in simply holding the ‘camera’ and it has a (removable) BT shutter button. Using this combo has eliminated the necessity of having to touch the screen for capture.
Mate, do keep up the great development 😂 of this great app! And charge us for it!!! I would have plunked down $10 for this app, no questions asked.
As others have suggested, we’d love to see some “preset pack add-ons”. Now is a good time to ride the “Fujifilm sim wave”. Surely the $0.99 price was introductory, and now it’s time for us as users to step-up and support further development.
Cheers!
This app has re-awakened my love of taking photos, great work @brambos .
A few of my shots from over the last week:
Here's a few from wandering around North Vancouver's waterfront area yesterday. Straight out-of-camera.
You really make the ultra wide angle work there!
Wow you really look like Bruce Willis!
Nice!
I don’t know why it happens (I also had it once now, but I can’t reproduce it). But I’m now taking the brute force route: I am simply going to set up the entire app again when it comes back to the foreground. Hopefully that will fix it.
@brambos i have not had the volume button problem on iPhone 11 Pro latest iOS.
However, I’m not listening to podcasts or music while using X4PN.
I vaguely remember something similar a long time ago… where there was an issue using a camera app whilst listening to podcasts.
I forget the particulars, but I what worked in that scenario was changing the order that I launched the camera app and music/podcast app. I forget the order, but in that case it worked if I launched one of them first, then put it in the background while I launched the other.
Again, it was a while ago and may not be the same issue. As I’m not having the volume button issue with X4PN, I can’t test to see if that works or not.
The slowdowns seem to happen and get worse the more I put the display to sleep (IE I put the phone in my pocket) while using the app. If I switch to another app first, then sleep, everything is fine when I switch back to Xp4n again. Seems to also affect the volume button issue the same way, along with the display sometimes appearing upside down no matter how I rotate the phone. Eventually it gets so bad I need to kill the app and restart to get it to do anything.
Maybe that helps?
Lovely app anyway, I'm really digging it. I never really understood the appeal of say Halide over the stock app (doesn't really add much if you're shooting PooRAW anyway). But this app is totally different for me. Very excited to see how it handles the UW Lens in 48MP of the 16 Pro next week.
Thanks for all your work on this, I'm sure it's become more work than you envisioned initially!
Lol... people in the App Store reviews complaining that after cropping the 48mp image, only a 24mp image remains - which is obviously not nearly good enough for serious photography.
What do they expect, that I can turn their phone camera into a professional full frame DSLR using a magical piece of software?
That's a keeper!
Maybe a disclaimer would be in order? And I know the temptation to be sarcastic might be there, just keep it factual.

I can’t reproduce the same problems on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, nor Tarekith slowdowns. When shooting, I have only three apps opened: Photos, Apple Camera, and XP4N. I had problems with orientation locking, but after the patch everything is fine. Mode switch is my worst pet-peeve.
🙏
All the new photos are magnificent! 🤩 I enjoyed exploring and analyzing every single one. The most prominent ones are the @Krupa reflection series and that fantastic yellow parasol shot from @sch.
The film look makes the photos look like they were from a magazine:
(edited to fix the perspective distortion)
For what it’s worth, @brambos, I would gladly pay for IAP ‘film packs’ of different vintage looks, colour and black and white, to apply to this super wide format.
Using this app has rekindled my interest in iPhone photography apps generally, sending me on a quest for other ‘look specific’ apps. So far, I am very impressed with this app, which seeks to emulate the look of classic Japanese b&w photography:

And with this, which turns your iPhone into a credible imitation of a pinhole camera:

After the upcoming update (which is still waiting for Apple's review), I'm adding a second black & white mode, inspired by HP5+...
Two very random test-shots for comparison:
The current Ortho mode, for punchy and contrasty B&W:
The new HP5 mode - softer and less contrasty - with a subtle dreamy personality:
I wondered if there might be a case for sharing photos to this app to have them processed by one of the film types; I’ve been taking duplicate shots so that I can get the colour I want the last day or two, and then thought it’d be lovely to ‘develop’ (I guess in reality retake) them with the other options… not really the design of the app I know, just idealising from a user perspective😅
Some pretty (but boring😂 - a phrase a photographer friend uses) slots from my run this morning…

Really like this photo. I've been thinking the same as others here. (1) this app has rekindled my interest in iPhone photography; (2) I'd like to be able to choose my film/development strategy after the fact, under better lighting conditions, on a bigger (iPad) screen. Yes, I know it doesn't work like that with a real camera; and, no, I don't expect that from a .99 app. Regardless of cost, however, this app is inspiring.
Yeah, I can’t say there’s an argument for really adding those features in this app, but just thought I’d mention that it was something that was ongoing to me a lot. It’s nice how this app has rekindled a lot of people’s interest; for me it’s taking me back to the early noughties / late nineties when I ran around with various cheap cameras, half frames mostly, but always a cheapo panoramic crop camera that I took tons of lovely images with, I might do a few out and post them here for comparison… thank you for picking that one, I tend towards the abstract but do take more normal landscapes in aiming and that one took a few positions to get just right…
I thought I'd join you with a pretty boring photo. @Luxthor thought I should have a good eye for photography because I draw/paint. I don't, I've tried. This does make some really awesome shots. This is not one of them (post process in PSD Raw)
