    That's a beautiful capture!

I'm also very happy with how the tweaked halation effect comes out in daylight shots like this one. It's still there in contrasty images, but looks a lot more natural.

Well, it seems I have the latest version (I deleted it and re-installed it) and it's still no-go with the volume button...

Thanks for trying. I’m all out of ideas on this one. There’s likely something different about the SE compared to other models but I can’t test (and the volume keys weren’t part of the original concept in the first place). :/

  • @SinghSong I have the rotation issues, you’re not alone. I have an SE2020, and XP4N always starts the wrong way up (volume controls at the bottom), and if turned the other way often the interface rotates but the image is upside down. Rotating it back often keeps the upside down image, or XP4N stops rotating the interface completely.

I normally keep the rotation lock on (I rarely use the phone in landscape) and the standard camera app usefully ignores it. XP4N half ignores it…

Turning rotation lock off solves the problem, though I rarely remember to do it and obviously it’s an extra step before using the app so missing shots is a possibility (I haven’t had chance to use it properly other than test shots so far).

Thanks for mentioning this one, should be a fairly straightforward fix!

By the way, does anyone have any tips or ideas about where I could try to "promote"* XP4N?

I used to be active on DPReview forums, but other than that I'm not super familiar with the digital photography scene these days (and Twitter/Instagram are not ideal for organic promotion anymore).

*I hate _marketing_ my stuff, but if I want people to find my app I'll need to make it visible somehow.

You might want to try posting in some groups in Reddit. There are some active subs there for word of mouth enthusiasts, like the ABF community. There’s another somewhat similar in concept photography app called Mood that seems to have taken off in a way that reminds me of some of the small dev iOS music apps.

You bring a real artists eye to everything you make. Love the app, thanks so much and good luck with it!!

XP4N defaults to upside down for me too if I hold it with the volume buttons on top when I first launch it. A quick spin in the hands and it’s all better though.

Bram, there’s a lot of iPhone photography tutorialists on YouTube, I’m sure they’d love to play with the new app.

So for you and @SinghSong the app starts with the “virtual shutter button” at the top of the screen when held in portrait?

No it’s at the bottom. Have another read of my posts then follow the instructions

Well, that’s a very conscious design decision which I won’t change.

If you want to shoot portrait that’s exactly where the shutterbutton should be. The other way would be very much upside down in my opinion :)

This observation has nothing to do with portrait. It’s to do with landscape. Now the Vol Up button has been brought into play. The physical Vol buttons should imho be top right when horizontal, like a camera. Physical buttons on the top not the bottom. When launching the app and rotating the camera to landscape with the physical buttons top right, XP4N is upside down, then rotates to correct itself. I’m just saying it should launch the right way up in the first place. This wasn’t obvious or an issue before as the Vol buttons weren’t in play. You should have left them alone 😂 📸

Yes, it does have something to do with shooting portrait.

When you hold the phone portrait and you start up the app, the shutter button should be at the bottom so you can immediately start shooting with your thumb close to the shutter button.

I really don't care much where the volume keys are because they weren't part of the app's concept - and frankly I regret adding support for them because they've only been a massive pain and have distracted from what I set out to do with the app. :#

Apple seem to agree, hence they've now added a dedicated shutter button to the phone, rather than giving us native access to the volume keys for this purpose.

I know you’ve labeled the Cine one “night”, but I happen to like that LUT for certain daytime shots too. :)

No problem...as I said, the onscreen button works fine for me...

    Oh, that’s fantastic!

Unfortunately it turns out this is not as straightforward as I'd hoped. When the device is rotation-locked, it doesn't tell the app when the phone is rotated. Hence, the camera could be upside down but the app doesn't know about it.

I don't know how Apple do it (they have access to more low level stuff than we 3rd party devs do) but I tried some other camera apps and their camera feed also goes upside down when rotation lock is enabled (logical: the camera is physically upside down)

Nobody asked for it (well, one person on DPReview did) but I'm adding it anyway because I think it's a fun challenge: support for Ko-Tanzaku scroll format.

Ko-Tanzaku is a traditional Japanese format (very narrow and high) usually painted on scrolls which were traditionally used to decorate narrow spaces between pillars in Japanese homes. It challenges the artist to capture a subject in its most essential form within the constraints of the paper.

Here's an (unedited) example test-shot I just took, compared to two famous Japanese examples:

    Coming later this week!
