Hmmmm, thanks, it's back on the list then! :)

Funnily enough I’ve finally crossed it off mine!

I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time on various forums and watching vids, but I’ve come to the conclusion it’s not ticking enough boxes, and a few hardware issues (e.g. noisy audio out) being reported have finally put me off.

Not a ‘definitively never’, but definitely a ‘not as it is at the moment’. I still think it’s an incredibly attractive device.

Note (beta) is really good now though, so I’m concentrating on that as a mobile ‘sketchpad’ (just cancelled my Logic sub), with a V12 Live upgrade and possible Launchkey mk4 purchase as a hardware controller.

Yah I am hoping to try one hands on. Very curious if it handles using while walking about well for me.

It's a fairly heavy device for it's size. I'd say you'll need both hands on it most times.

I'm assuming you don't walk on your hands though, so you'll probably be fine. 🤣

Yah it is about twice as heavy as the ipad i used to carry, but then I did have a pretty hefty case too for my ipad so it was probably about 2/3 the weight. I actually used a cradle under one arm approach, for a bit was was thinking of a velcro arm band thingy too.

LK Mk4 works well with Note and Live, Novation have added some nice features.

I have been using the MK4 with Note on an iPad air 2, using CCK3 with additional power. The LK needs the additional power and will not work without it. I have full sized LK so cannot say if the Mini works without the need for additional power. I do not know if the LK will power off newer iPads with the USB-C.

One thing to 'Note' haha, if you want to sync the LK Arp to Note then you need to convert Link to MIDI Clock using another app, I have been using AUM for that but it means you cannot use the tempo control on the LK.

I really like the workflow with Note, and the Move is very attractive from that standpoint, but the reliance on Live for creating presets and lack of connectivity to other hardware is putting me off.

I have the 49 key Mk4 LaunchKey and this will power up when connected to a USB C iPad.

The MK4's are a great controller for Ableton and any iPad app. I'd certainly recommend it.

Me too, if you are looking for a Live controller and not worried about the standalone operation then the LK makes more sense than the Move as a purchase

  • I got conflicting info now. I know a power user and producer who said the Move does indeed have control of the iPad Notes app.

Can anyone debunk this claim so I can MOVE on from this idea….

(Having 1:1 hw:sw control would be very important)

Hope I haven't caused this conflict lol.
The LK is a great controller for Live.
It works with move and note as a regular controller for note input and using its Chord map and arp features. It does not control the app.

    lol it wasn’t you .

I’m just trying to make sense of what I read and what my buddy told me: he distinctly said it’s a 1:1 controller for notes, just for the first 4 tracks though

But honestly - whatever man. I’m not gonna buy it . $500 is a lot to convert to ableton for me

Thanks Andy, yes an LK mk4 is definitely on my list. I’m thinking of the Mini 37, though a bit put off by the keys. The standard 37 has extra buttons and better keys but I wanted something more compact, so I think the Mini 37 wins overall. I can always lug out my bigger 49 LK mk2 if I want to go the full Elton.

Real shame the Move isn’t quite there for me, as it’s perfect size-wise, and playability definitely has the ‘fun’ element. Could still be on the cards at some point though if they add a few tempting upgrades, as the LK is only £130, so there’s room in the budget for both.

Good to hear the LK works with an iPad, another plus.

    MOVE does not control NOTE.

I just double checked this for you.

You might get lucky and find a way to get MIDI notes from USB A into Note, and you can probably start them together with link.

But you won't be able to use the encoders to control any synth parameters or launch patterns / scenes etc.

    Edit: What Tarekith said. 👆

  • Just discovered that you can mute any automation you recorded, by holding the M button and tapping the top of any knob that has automation on it.

Yeah, the Automation gestures are really sweet. It's a very satisfying workflow.

  • Can anyone sum up how well Move incorporates into a ipad set up, with for example aum and a au synth?
Can you use as midi keyboard, sequencer, midi map knobs etc…
    Thx!

Yeah, I couldn’t recommend it for those purposes. It’s just not designed for that.

This is a decent review. A number of interesting takes.

Yeah I saw that and agree with pretty much everything he said.

I’m really happy with mine. Would love to see a basic phrase looper added and think the channel eq on the master is really dumb - give us the dj tools lol.

Would also like to see a pump option on each track if we can’t have sidechain.

  • What’s amazing to me is how well it works with the melodica iPad app. USB-Audio into the move. MIDI and pad lights all translate perfectly from the iPad to move. Really wish they would open the usb-c midis for iPad. Would make a great controller. One of the marketing claims is the midi connection with other gear. Wish that included the iPad.

Yes, if this was iPad ready man, I wouldn’t own an op-z anymore

    Maybe with a f/w update ?

I think even if it could make a good controller for iOS, that’s perhaps missing it’s strength.

I’ve had mine for a few days now and honestly I don’t want to connect it to anything because then I’d be thinking again. This is up there with the original x0x boxes for being able to disconnect and make music with your hands (not your eyes.)

    MOVE does not control NOTE.

I should probably clarify this with - Not in ‘real time’ at least.

I’m actually impressed with how smooth the workflow is between making edits in MOVE and how quickly those Set changes are reflected back in the Cloud on NOTE.

    And vice versa.

So in that respect, there is a fair amount of control between the two.

I wasn’t really keen on using Note prior to getting Move.

Now the combo seems pretty addictive.

This exactly. Just write some music with it.

That's been one of my favorite things too. So nice to bounce back and forth and take advantage of the strengths of both. I'm actually kind of surprised so many people want Move to be a controller for Note tbh. Other than the 8 tracks in Note, you get more functionality out of Move. So....just use Move if you already have it.

Why wouldn’t people want a well-built compact controller for the iPad? The tech is already there as demonstrated by the Melodics app integration. Their marketing talks about the ability to work with other gear. I get that it works well as a stand alone but I don’t understand not wanting better midi implementation.

  • I didn't say I was surprised that people wanted it to be a general purpose iOS or MIDI controller, I was specifically referring to people who want it to be a controller for Note. You already have all the functionality of Note and then some in the hardware (minus the extra 4 tracks like I said), so why not just use the hardware and skip having to connect it to an iPad or iPhone?

It’s extremely fun to play, I am a big fan of the pads.

Does anyone know if it's possible to set the sample input to mono?
