I paid about £40 for a few months with Logic - most of that spent learning how to use it, started a few tracks, then was busy with other things so didn’t use it for the last few months. If I want to use it now and finish off those tracks, I have to start paying again…that’s the painful bit. With CB3 it’s still going to be there.
No you’re alright - it’s served its purpose now and I’ve bought CB3 😎
Yeah, that’s the killer for me. My mate brought over a massive modular rig over the summer. Expensive, but worked out at about half what I’ve spent on software. Plus he regularly buys second-hand and sells modules which ironically, seem to have gone up in value by the time he gets bored and decides to swap them! So my ‘cup of coffee’ music making has cost thousands, while his ‘expensive’ modular synth system is earning him a profit!
I hope you’re wrong, I’ve just bought v3!
@oldsynthguy Don’t worry, CB4 is not coming soon.
CB3 however will have another epic new update soon that will make a lot of people happy😉
Steinberg were pretty good about providing a reasonable price for existing users to convert to the new version last time around.
Cheers Doug, good to hear! Thanks also for your videos, the mega 100 track ‘ambient’ session pretty much sealed the deal for me!
Fingers crossed for finally including scale options like in gadget or better.
Hmmm…first glitch. It’s ticking all my boxes for functionality, but I just hit ‘undo’ after accidentally moving a block of audio into the wrong location, and it wiped out the whole track of audio blocks - about 5 minutes of careful editing - and I wasn’t able to recover my work by hitting the ’redo’ button.
This is something I really wanted to avoid, reliability is of topmost importance to me and why I stopped using Auria Pro.
Hope this is a one-off 🤔
@oldsynthguy
In my humble opinion Cubasis 3 has still got a lot going for it.
Here's a remix from my current series.
I'm currently using it to automate Pattern changes
for dRambo slide view and dRambo standalone
and vocal acapella playback and effects processing.
I will be tracking them in Cubasis 3 for the final stage of mixing and Mastering.
Really missing proper audio routing in Cubasis. In Logic I can send audio from an MIDI instrument track, to be recorded as audio, on a blank audio track via a new bus channel.
The reason for doing this, is it records your performance - tweaking filters, twiddling knobs - all the stuff that doesn’t get recorded on you initial MIDI track - but if I use the ‘freeze’ option, all those tweaks are lost. Yes I can go back and add automation after, but it’s more spontaneous when you can do it all in one sweep.
Tried routing AUM in, but that’s hideously clunky swapping screens, and it keeps crashing when I try anyway.
Ugh. Frustrating, this is a pretty basic function for a DAW, I’m surprised it’s not included.
I really hope this is included in an update, or if anyone knows if I’m missing something obvious.
You can record your automation as midi data whilst playing. I agree about the routing limitations in Cubasis 3. However, one thing we have to remember about Cubasis 3 is that it works across many platforms - old versions of iOS, iPhone, Android, Chrome - ancient iPads and brand spanking new top of the range ones. This means it’s never going to be Cubase 14 Pro on iPad. But the limitations have never stopped me doing anything, there’s always a workaround. There’s no tempo track as yet but, my latest track that I’m working on in YouTube livestreams has a 7/8 section, a 5/4 section - back to 4/4 and plenty of automation going on. I’d rather have something simpler that works than a DAW that introduces fancy AI gimmicks before getting the basics right. If you need any Cubasis help, just ask.
@oldsynthguy ”Cup o coffee music making “ Term of the century ! Ha ha ha
Jamie - you’re a life saver - thank you!
Didn’t realise selecting the R/W buttons when recording the initial track was an option, but it works perfectly. Freezing the track does the job, so it’s actually less hassle than using my Logic routing workflow.
Update: this method works with most of my apps, but doesn’t seem to work with Spacecraft (it doesn’t record movements on the x/y pads), which is a shame, and where internal routing would be a better option. I’ll see if I can find a workaround though.
Update 2 (!): found a (almost perfect) workaround online: When you buy apeMatrix you get an AU called Mixer Send Receive which lets you bus audio between tracks strictly within the same host (in this case, Cubasis). You put one instance in the sending track, and one on the track you want to receive on.
This worked with a Spacecraft test, only issue was it recorded in mono, so will keep digging!
Yes this is definitely a bonus. I used my 13” Air with Logic, since the Logic UI was virtually unusable on my old 11” Air 4, but CB3 works really well on both devices. In fact I’ve found myself using my old Air 4 more!
Right, back to making music, and thanks again Jamie!
It’s absolutely my pleasure to help. You can tag me on here or under my videos there’s all my contact info. If you need me just reach out.
@oldsynthguy I don't know I you found this yet but there is a option in the settings that let you unfreeze a track while keeping the the audio track generated by freezing. It very useful.
^ this is one of the coolest dudes in iOS music production,Easily .
Thank god for Doug Woods and Jamie Mallender
pros with their talent , experience and humanity that help us little guys are a blessing
Thanks @thesoundtestroom @Jamie_Mallender
Btw get CB3 too
Ultimate DAW (only $25 right now)
Okay, I didn't get N-Track Pro 10 yet. I bought OneShot (on sale) and Pro-R2 (also on sale), so my spending money for the month is tapped. However, after I finish this one track in Nanostudio 2 (the track I was unable to finish in Logic Pro due to its bugs), I will dig deeper into Cubasis 3 to see what else is in there. I already use it for recording and processing my vocals. I have all its IAPs as well, so no reason not to try and use it to complete a track.
I think my biggest hurdle for Cubasis 3 was a lack of a "Slate replacement" (Slate is that drum machine in Nanostudio 2), but now with OneShot, I should be good to go.
@Jamie_Mallender : There very well COULD be a Cubasis Pro for iOS but yeah, it’d have to be a seperate app probably in the way that Apple has GB and LP4 .
No I didn’t know that, and that’s really helpful thank you! I’ve been creating blocks of audio by freezing the MIDI track, and then deleting the frozen one, but unfreezing and using it again will definitely speed up my workflow.
I’m mostly using an Air M2 so should have plenty of CPU/RAM/storage available for big projects, but I’m a bit obsessive about keeping the number of tracks down, so it’s easier to manage and scroll around.
Definitely. Being able to learn the bits I thought I knew but didn’t via their vids, is essential for me and I’m eternally grateful for their services - and for the bits of info I receive on here too.
Hopefully once I get the hang of it I can return the favour.
I agree, the Slate pads in NS2 are excellent. My next CB3 task is to work out how to match the pads in that one, to my drum apps, as they currently don’t align.
I picked up Cem’s drum fills app yesterday which works really well with OneShot, so I’ll see how that combo works in CB3.
This is the BEST combo ever and the reason I will remain on iOS/ipad for years to come
With
CUBASIS 3
The perfect setup equivalent for my studio setup.
In fact, it was when one shot came out, that it all came together -
ALL I NEED NOW are those 4 apps and I no longer Logic and my XLN addictive drums 2.
With Cubasis 3+HALion+ Neo Fm and one shot, octachron and autofills ; I can’t believe it, but I actually prefer my iPad to my Mac.
I was a little, like “worried”, after Logic came out the first year and we didn’t get a proper port or a desktop equivalent for Toontrack or XLN, and then after the second year I was sure it wasn’t happening anytime soon so I accepted I would always need my Mac and logic+xln
But god bless klevgrand for it because I think it’s better than toontrack and even slightly better than my go to XLN
Sorry tangent.
Point is - you got the winning combo my friend. Can’t go wrong with that , and it’ll serve you well for years
I think that ultimately, at some point it is inevitable. But Lars has confirmed this is not the plan for now. I’m not privy to their long term plans and if I was, I wouldn’t be able to divulge. But my thinking is that, every iPad with the M1 chip or better is capable of running something much more powerful than Cubasis 3. But how many musicians have those iPads and how many of them would spend real money to get something closer to Cubase? We see iOS musos complaining all the time about the cost of amazing apps that cost a tiny fraction of the desktop price. I don’t think the market is ready for it. I think also, that because Steinberg play their cards very close to their chest, as is their prerogative and is very sensible in many ways, people in forums chat away about what’s coming next and convince themselves of things…. It’s only natural, but I’m not sure it’s helpful. Whatever, it remains exciting and fascinating.
Cool. Best of luck to you mate.
Good synopsis as always, @Jamie_Mallender however people are already referring to their M1 iPads as “aging”. Mine’s already
almost four years old and now even the upcoming new base level iPad may have a chip that can acess AI . Maybe not now but in a year or two IMO.
Yeah it works well, I’ve got the other Klevgrand drum apps too, so I can get a proper racket going.
👍
Now I’ve sussed out the routing workaround, and got used to which handle to pull on the audio boxes, I’m sorted. I think it’s good to have cheaper, less cluttered options for those of us that just want to get on with recording some music. I hope if they do create a ‘pro’ version, they keep this one ticking along 😎
Well, ever since my in-depth comparison post, I've mostly ditched Logic Pro for Cubasis 3. The biggest reason is for whatever weird reason, maybe it's my iPad Mini 7 or something, but Logic Pro occasionally reset plugin parameters to a default state. Not just AUv3s but also its own limiter. I still use Logic Pro for AI Mastering Assistant at the moment (at least for my current EP in production), but will switch back to "manual" mastering for the next EP/Album and cancel my Logic Pro sub.
That said I'm not here to dunk on Logic Pro. Just didn't work out for me personally. Ymmv and all those catchphrases and tropes.
I've been watching @MobileMusicPro 's videos on Cubasis 3 to learn more about the app, and the more I watch those tutorials, the more I'm starting to like Cubasis 3. Only thing I need are drumpads like Slate. Well, I have OneShot for acoustic drumsets, and I'll probably use Koala for electronic drums since it has a nice sample browsing system. Although I think for my purposes, I will create my next track using only what comes in Cubasis 3 (including its IAPs) and master that with Logic Pro's AI Mastering Assistant to maintain the sonic consistency between tracks.
@jwmmakerofmusic :Vortex dumped CB3 the day that LP4 came out though
I didn't know that. 😳 Well as I said above, ymmv. 😅 I just finished my first full track in Cubasis 3. The idea was to only use what comes in CB3, but I ended up using a riser from "Sounds of KSHMR 4" pack on an audio track. Needed that extra "oomph".
They all have their strengths and weaknesses, so if you can afford it, having a range of tools to work from will give you a solid range of options.
I’m currently struggling to get Auto fills and Octachron to trigger OneShot together in CB3 (I’m sure it’s possible, I just need to figure it out), but it’s cheaper than Logic, so swings and roundabouts! At least I can record them via AUM if it’s not possible in CB3.
Logic’s mastering feature is really good, fortunately I have Logic on desktop, so still have access.
@oldsynthguy
Hit me up if you need help with oneshot, autofills, Octo. I use them in AUM, (despise Cubase) but can roll with you if you want some help.
Thanks! AUM is no problem - I’ve got a couple of Octo+fills channels working, no problems at all in that, but in CB3 fills doesn’t trigger changes in octo. I can hear it if I switch off octo, but they’re not working with each other.
No worries, I’ll work it out, just don’t have a lot of spare time at the moment.
Cubasis 3 has a special place in my heart. I should mention I’m subject to DAW promiscuity, I have almost all of them installed on my devices, and jump around for inspiration or practicality.
Cubasis is often the go to if I need to do something that has to be done quickly and without time wasting crashes. Reliable, and a basic logical gui. I have it installed on iPhone, iPad and an Android machine
It’s not really my main crush or most used these days but I keep her standing by. I call her Cubby and she just feels homey and welcoming
I’m tempted to share a run down of the others I have or don’t have on the device. The ones I like the most I don’t see talked about much here. There a couple I have tried and deleted. Whatever, right? It’s a personal thing
But hells yeah Cubby is well worth it. Including all the IAPs.
I think that’s just that feeling we suffer from of wanting to have the new thing. There is no music software that taxes the M1 as yet. Cubasis 3 handles more AUV3’s than any other host but it’s still the software that struggles when you do overtax it, not the iPad.
