Didn't they just update ChordJam for iOS with slightly bigger fonts here and there, or, is this just my imagination? (the preset representation is still very small)

  • Yikes : Audiomodern please , update it with a zoom function for those of us with older eyes!!

  • Phaser rate doesn’t go below 1Hz. Annoying.

Yes, the UI on this is incredibly disappointing. I really hope they change their approach to their UI design. It's not even just the fonts that are a weakness. Great sounds tho

  • I thought BabyAudio was the king of the design-over-usability thing, but this one is even more extreme. We have a new king! 😅

  • Yes, sounds fantastic and great video you did on MASS generator

Although two very different systems the way the samples are grouped reminded me of Tomofon. I can't find a way to use anything else but these packs when trying to build a sound from scratch. I only bought the Vox pack sp far but have the other free ones and there are not a sea of these grouped sounds to choose from, around 60-70 maybe. I'm tempted to buy one more pack but ...

Yup ... Some sounds are really good, but I can't even read some of that text with my varifocals, which makes me wonder how practical it would be to attempt to edit sounds to any significant extent, given how much clicking and tapping that normally requires.

The readability between Tomofon and SB above is quite remarkable and Klevgrand isn't exactly famous for their user friendly font sizes either.

This is the review for the desktop version we published two weeks ago or so, it might be a helpful read.

Too bad for the readability issues, but I'm confident the developers are looking into this. Probably a consequence of the porting from Mac to iOS.

  • edited November 20

I think if you purchase the packs on their site, you can use them for both desktop and iOS…but if you buy in-app, I’m not sure they can be used on desktop. Please correct me if I’m wrong, though. (They are slightly cheaper in-app it seems.)

  • edited November 20

It’s frequently said that bad UI is due to porting from desktop.

I’m happy to agree, and challenge that these apps shouldn’t be released until their UIs are optimized for the platform they’re being sold on.

Designers love their "clean" look - an item surrounded by lots of empty space.

It might look nice but nobody can read the text.

The other one is "black text on a dark colour". Very stylish, but nobody can read black text on a dark grey background.

  • A few things:

You can only create your own Packs using your own presets or presets from unlocked packs purchased According to the Complete Overview Video on the Audiomodern YouTube channel
I tried to create a preset, but some features are locked in the app such as such as Sample and Mapping Editor until you make an in app purchase (per the popup). The only IAP's that I see are the the sound box instruments.
There's some links to the Audiomodern site one of the pages, but there's no manual available (that I can see)

Soundpack functionality and licensing - Desktop vs. iOS

From the FAQ - this appears to be for the desktop version:
    https://audiomodern.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/22803403542941-Can-I-use-Soundbox-without-a-license-key

"By using Soundbox as a player, all features are unlocked and functional, except for the Sample & Mapping editor, which allows you to import your own sounds.

The editor can be unlocked by entering a license key that comes by purchasing any Audiomodern Soundbox pack."

Is it different on iOS? You can't load a pack that someone sent just to play it and not edit? You need the license for each pack?
Are there differences when playing and adjusting playback on licensed vs. unlicensed packs?

Well, I couldn't figure out how. The import options I tried had all sound files greyed out so I assumed it didn't but I haven't read the manual.

+1 same here. The big grey out! Like how does one get that freesie mechana pack? Unfortunately, Doug's video on how to did not work for me. Very frustrating as I tried everything that one should. I think that the IAP packs are overpriced and I will wait for a sale on them. From the bits I heard in the demos, a few were super but a lot of them where meh for me. Is the Dev around on here to answer our queries? Cheers, ED

Regarding the Mechana pack, I downloaded the zip file from the website, unzipped in the files app and then imported from within Soundbox. Worked flawlessly. Still deleted because I’m all set with XinematiX.

Reinstalled to give it another shot since I generally like this developers apps. Played with this a bit more and changed my mind and decided I like it. The interface isn’t all that intuitive at first, but once you figure out the general logic, it’s pretty simple overall.

Interface is still a bit rough on an iPad mini 5, but not too bad.

Will likely stick with the free version until there’s a pack sale where I can import my own samples.

Since I have bought the soundpacks from the webstore and tried to unlock the ipad version, i can report that the app won’t unlock this way. You ll have to make a purchase through the app store for this.

Apart from the font and icon sizes, I think the UI is designed beautifully by the way. I wish more apps had such a visually appealing and intuitive UI. Maybe the large visual can be removed or made smaller in a future update to accommodate for larger buttons and fonts?

  • edited November 21

Thanks for the helpful comments. I decided to take the plunge and buy one of the IAP's, the Kromium pack. After that was done, I was able to create my own presets and my own custom pack. It's pretty intuitive to navigate, especially if you've used some of the other Audiomodern apps like Playbeat.

I loaded up a couple very basic samples from a pack from Mobile Music Pro and started playing around with them, and with just a few tweaks and within a few minutes, it transformed the samples into massive, resonant, deep and interesting sounds.

I also imported the Mechania pack which I had downloaded to my PC and used with the PC version of Soundbox. I had to perform the extraction of the original zip file on the PC. When it was uncompressed in the iPad, it was apparently corrupted. This was done on an old 8 GB USB drive (which was all I could reformat to exFAT on short notice), which I am using to store the demo pack and my custom samples, and it's actually working!

It's way to early to draw final conclusions on this app, but any reservations I had about the licensing and importing packs are cleared up. The interface is very responsive and cleanly designed, with vibrant color accents, and with a very modern look and feel, although I would say that the font sizes on some of the items and the icons are a bit small on an 11" iPad, and OK for me, but might be difficult for someone with poorer vision.

This is a real winner. I'm not sure about buying more of the current soundpacks - none of the ones available so far sound like something that I would really need, and they're pretty big. Even though I'm using an external drive to store sounds right now, I don't see the point in having gigs of storage for sounds that I'm not going to use a lot. I'm still open to hearing what people do with the existing packs and waiting to see what other packs may become available, so I may change my mind. For now, I'm going to be experimenting with loading it up with my own samples and one's that I've already got in my collection and see how far I can go with it - it looks very promising.

Here are some updates to the questions I posed earlier:

    • Is it different on iOS?
It seems to be quite close to the PC version which I also tried out (for free with the demo pack).

    • You can't load a pack that someone sent just to play it and not edit?
You can if you have unlocked an IAP on iOS.

    • You need the license for each pack?
No new info yet. Still not sure how this works if you want to transfer over a pack that was purchased for Mac or PC.

    • Are there differences when playing and adjusting playback on licensed vs. unlicensed packs?
      No new info yet.

Really looking forward to see how this app works in some competent hands and what people create with it!

**Edit: 12:30 am - I just noticed that the CPU utilization on this app running under AUM so far is very light - I hope it stays reasonable under heavy use, but it's a very good sign.

I like the Audiomodern too! Is there anything noticeable that stands out in this sampler compared to the others?

  • Had this answer back from Sound Modern support ref IAP desktop and IPad.

As for your question, although all Soundbox Instruments can be loaded into both the desktop and iPadOS versions of Soundbox, the mapping & sample editor in Soundbox for iPad can be unlocked by making at least one In-App Purchase on the App Store.

If you already own all of the available instruments and you do not want to purchase an instrument two times, a new Soundbox Instrument will be released in December which will be available as an In-App Purchase and will be able to unlock the editor.

  • Is there somewhere where you can hear all presets in the available libraries? I'm interested in the Voxmotive library but I want to hear what I get before I fork out any cash...

I don’t have all the others, but I like the simplicity of this interface, and the movement in the vector section. I would like it a lot more if I could import my own samples. I know you can if you buy one of the packs, but I don’t like it enough to spend $25 on it at the moment. If those go on sale at some point, I might consider it. Although, I’d prefer to just pay a lower IAP price just to unlock sample import.

  • @skiphunt On iOS I just use Audiolayer for multi sampling, so not to fussed on unlocking not sure how the 2 compare when it comes to setting up multi samples.

  • @skiphunt said:

I have a feeling that might happen at some point after the initial release, if there's enough demand. Maybe 50% of sample pack price perhaps.

@thesoundtestroom is doing preset deep-dive videos from time to time. I too would like to hear "all" presets in the Voxmotive library, so hoping he will do that B)

Getting good vocals libraries tend to be hard to do on your own, or expensive to purchase, so this would be one nice entry library for unlocking the app (if you want any vocals in your track, that is).

Playing with the Voxmotive demo in the demo pack, is it surprising that some nearby keys have nearby-sounding vocals (as expected) whereas some other nearby keys have a huge gap (an octave?) in the tone? Can anyone who has bought the library comment on this layout?
