What does it mean to have 3 layers per part? I can have 3 instruments playing the same midi sequence? How is it useful?
@cuscolima It just means that you can layer any three instruments together per part, for example, if you want to layer a piano with a Rhodes, or strings, or/and strings, or build massive pad-type sounds.
It's also good for layering kicks etc.
Each layer can be mixed within that particular part, and each part has 3 insert effects.
You can't use AUv3 effects on the inserts, only on the FX Buses, i.e the Master Bus has three slots and then there is FXA Return and FXB Return, each having a further three slots, these can also have AUv3 Effects as well as the internal Effects.
@Jumpercollins Jim tested this in a different, not with Testflight, so far for me at least it has been solid.
So when can we expect a pre-release video? So many questions..
Layering sounds is such a common practice in music these days as we don’t really have to worry about track counts on modern DAWs. I often have three sounds layered and sometimes up to six! Being able to layer 3 sounds per part in a more condensed ‘hardware’ styled app like this (I presume as it looks still loosely based on the GR16 but on steroids….I may be wrong), will be quite handy!
the 3rd layer on the picture is GR-16
It's very common to layer sounds, and without this you would have to use 2 parts of the limited 16 parts to achieve that, so it's a very welcome addition.
The difference with Jim is that he is a musicians and actually uses it's apps, that's why they make so much sense when you use them., there are usually no unnecessary features.
are you on the beta? (I saw you are) that's a bummer, I was thinking on using mixbox to bypass the limitations
@RajahP I will be making many videos for GR2, the first will be a general overview, it will be out a little before the release.
Just making sure everything is correct.
@Fruitbat1919 Yes, if you are already familiar with GR16 then you will feel right at home here for the most part.
Although there are new ways to record etc, with clips for example, which is not dissimilar to how you work with GR16 at the moment but much more intuitive with full page editing.
Then Song Mode which will let you record just like a linear DAW, it's all very very good and heaps of fun.
Are you sure Doug?
I thought for certain this would be like Loopy Pro or Drambo. (being able to act as the host and/or use it as an auv3 instrument/effect in another host)
I might really be somewhat disappointed if you’re right.
No AUv3 effects on inserts is a bit sad, will miss the FAC flavors I've gotten attached to - wonder if any chance that'd change in the future, or if the limitation is part of the design?
@thesoundtestroom can't wait for your videos on this one
So it’s standalone only?
@Edward_Alexander Yes, I am 100% sure, in fact I even checked with Jim.
Although, who knows, it may be added in the future.
And, yes, it is standalone only, although to be fair, it is very powerful😊
Thanks for the clarification @thesoundtestroom
Well, thank goodness for Loopy Pro, & Drambo @Edward_Alexander
Ok thanks.
Wow. I’m kinda surprised really, being a new app in 2025 and all.
The App Store description is slightly confusing where it says “supports auv3” on the first line, then about 4 or 5 lines down, it also says “supports hosting AUV3s”
Although I think I remember GR16 was standalone only at first also, then he added the ability to use as an auv3 later.
Yes thank goodness.
I guess my dreams of wiring up that elaborate GR2 multi-outlet session in Drambo will have to wait!
Game Plan Changier
I'm sure it has a high probability of it getting added later, like you mentioned GR16 did!
Oh I’m sure he’ll add it eventually.
I’m not mad. Just suprised a little..
Yeah me too, I also wonder how much testing has been done on this as it doesn't seem a lot of people, if any, have been on the test flight. AUV3 hosting adds so much complexity, needs testers.
I use layering a lot so this is great! I like to layer up mono bass synth lines and layer pads with arps.
Thanks all. That's the kind of feature that will push me to finally upgrade my iPad for a more powerful
So we can use multi track recorder within it to record audio?
Closest thing to hardware on iOS we have to date, it seems..
Yes.
You have experience that the app gives AUv3 effects access to the hardware audio inputs?
If there is no aufx insert per channel, i have already a - very simple - feature request. 😉 I NEED an eq with at least one parametric (middle) band in each channel/track. judging by the mixer page there is only a simple 3-band eq. Is there a more complex eq in the available insert fx?
I was thinking to use aufx (i.e. pro q) for that but if it‘s not available for each track…
oh you are talking about the multitrack app, that would rock if it syncs to the GR2 timeline! I hope Jim can make this work if it doesn't, that way he won't have to live with years of people begging for audio tracks lol
there is an "EDIT" button on the EQ
good catch, hope it‘s what i hope it is 🤔
I wonder why it‘s not shown on the mixer page…different eqs?
That sync’ing with the timeline functionality is a god-send in NS2 - I’m sure it will sync in GR2 too (I would guess Jim doesn’t have to do anything either: I believe it worked out of the box in NS2 as far as I can remember so it’s probably something that Paul has implemented in MTR itself).
There's plenty of EQ options available.

(That's the main Part EQ)
And if that's not enough you can stack three of these as IFXs per part

(You can set the type for the lo/high, set the low, mid, high band frequencies, gain and q and switch to an X&Y mode for faster tweaking once the main parameters are set).
And yes I got a 'go' to share, but I'll be focusing on making sure it doesn't bail...
