  • I remember reading somewhere that folks who already owned these apps are grandfathered in and, therefore, immune to this new subscription model .. am I imagining that? Was that only for AudioBus and not for the synths? Or was it total baloney?

If purchasers of the original weren’t grandfathered in, that is a pretty major breach of expectations. Developers aren’t supposed to do that. Updating a purchased app should not change it from non-subscription to subscription. Apple doesn’t prevent it from happening but indicates in the developer guidelines that devs shouldn’t do it.

Well, so much for regaining trust etc. the only one of their.

Apps I’d kept installed was Retro Piano, and it’s just had an update which I installed in the hopes that that would be an end to tracking, though I note the App Store still lists the trackers.

Except now it has most of it locked in the AUv3, including my own user presets. Presumably they want me to subscribe to get full access back - I tried a Restore Purchases and it said there was nothing to restore. There seems no way to buy their subscription, which I wouldn’t anyway, so it’s now gone, too.

Such a pity, it was a great app, and these people are just profiteering creeps.

    Absolutely, that's bullshit right there!

    Yes.

Don't understand what could be "nice" about them.

Those "developers" could die of thrust on my door steps and I would give them a kick while leaving.

What a mistake to sell AudioBus.

Any way to report such developers to Apple?

  • I would suggest that those people who are unhappy leave negative reviews on the app store.

That's what the reviews section is for...to warn others who might get stung.

There probably is, but the facts aren't clear yet in this case. It should be confirmed first whether or not existing owners before the subscription / one-time IAP changes were made are affected. If the changes resulted in people who owned the app no longer being able to use it, that would be something reportable.

We may not agree with it, but making it subscription for new purchasers is acceptable business practice. So is adding 3rd party trackers as long as they're properly disclosed in the App Store description and the choice dialog is given to allow/prevent tracking on first run after the change. Both of these have been followed, so there is nothing Apple would object to there.

If anyone is interested in pursuing a complaint with Apple about the subscription change, it's first necessary to establish how it affects existing owners. If it doesn't affect people who purchased before the change then there's no basis for Apple to consider a complaint.

I'm not going to bother re-installing Audiobus myself to find out.

Audiobus is now showing no 3rd party trackers in the App Store. It looks as though they followed through on that one. It consists only of an identifier and usage data. It's not data that can be provided to 3rd parties and is in no way linked to your personal information. It's more like data that could be used as they claim, to improve the app, and to gauge how the app is being being used.

It'll be interesting to see if the 3rd party trackers get removed from the rest of the apps they acquired.

  • I took one for the team and updated on my phone. I see no in app purchases that are possible for me to get. The app is currently buggy. It can’t find or load any of my IAA apps.

Installed AudioBus on my company's iPhone, @espiegel123

So it seem that old users can continue to use the App, but new users need either a subscription or a one-time purchase.

OK, so I re-installed and tested.

No more 3rd party trackers. Works in airplane mode. No issues with needing to make IAPs. It appears existing owners are grandfathered in. Nothing left to complain about as far as I'm concerned. 👍🏼

I don't think they'll get a lot of new customers at that price point. But you never know.

    Wait! Hold the phone.

The app shuts down automatically after about 2 minutes idle in airplane mode.

    Yes, same here!

I spare you my aggressive thoughts about the new "developer".

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for the feedbacks.
For technical reasons, the new update will be gradually released among the audience and it requires some time to reach all users.

However we want to ensure you that the next version of the app privacy policy will look like the screen below.
Also, the tracking we be removed also from Audiokit Apps

Thanks for using Audiobus and Audiokit!!

  • That's sensible. Best for everyone to listen to your biggest advocates. And there are no bigger advocates than the people here.

  • @Audiobus_support AudioBus crashes after 1 to 2 minutes without Internet access!

    Same here.

Launch it and even without touching it or loading anything into it, the app crashes.

  • @Audiobus_support said:

Which is all very well, but are you going to fix the AUv3 versions of the AudioKit apps? As in remove all the locks etc for existing users?

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your feedback, we're already fixing the issue and in a few there will be a new release of Audiobus that solves crashes in the offline mode.

    Thanks,

    Dear @Audiobus_support,

Thank you for the update on Audiobus app, but I would like to ask for clarification regarding also other applications that were purchased by users before they were taken over by "Audiobus Pty Ltd" and before the sales policy was changed from a one-time purchase to a subscription.

For example the "Audiokit Retro Piano" application after the update has blocked functions as in the screenshot at the end. There is also no possibility to restore purchases, because it was paid for before the change to subscription. I kindly ask you to answer the following 3 questions:

    1. Is this a bug in the app that will be fixed in an update, so that user who has already paid full price for the app (before it changed to a subscription) should have all the options unlocked? (which are now locked after app update)
    2. If the answer to the above question is "yes", when can we expect an app update to fix the bug?
    3. Can users who have purchased other apps in full-price that have now moved to subscriptions (e.g. VHS Synth, Bass 808 Synth, Audiobus) and others that maybe also will change to subscriptions (Digital D1 Synth, Digitalism 2000, FM Player 2) still use fully after apps update without purchasing a subscription? (after possible updates to fix the bugs if needed)

I will be grateful for the answer. Thank you. Kind regards.

I think @Audiobus_support would save everyone a lot of grief (including themselves) if they laid out clearly what their strategy is, and what their plan is for the apps they have acquired, especially in regards to how existing owners will be treated.

I’m guessing for most, the only tolerable solution is for them to be grandfathered into whatever new licensing arrangement is being planned by the new owners and that there be no unnecessary tracking, and no need for internet access (I can probably understand that initial re licensing will need at least a ping to their server but beyond that seems unusable for many)

Either that, or restore the original apps to a non subscription state, hide them from purchase, and then simply publish new versions of them with the new licensing model and see how that pans out…

Me too. If a given update causes problems, Audiobus Pty Ltd declared that they will fix the apps.

I agree. For this moment I am glad that Audiobus has declared that users who purchased the apps before switching to a subscription will retain full functionality. I hope that the current situation is only a temporary state and everything will return to working properly as before.
