In the sampler tap edit. Tap the IN: ... button below Record, and set the part you want to record from or Master Out. Hit the Record button in the editor when you're ready to go.
Hint: You can minimize the editor window to get to other areas of the interface while you record. The window minimizes to a handy little panel that has the sample editor record button on it.
I’m doing this with Lumbeat Drummers… The update fixed Ableton Link.. Wish we could save and load these sequences.
Just came across the motherlode of SF2 collections; for those asking for some sources earlier:
https://ia800401.us.archive.org/view_archive.php?archive=/16/items/500-soundfonts-full-gm-sets/500_Soundfonts_Full_GM_Sets.zip
You rock dude. Thank you!
Exactly the info I needed.
I’m confused. Ableton link is one thing. Printing midi to a drum rack is another. Yes Ableton Link works and in AUM with GR-2 as IAA, I can send midi from Octachron AU to play the drum kit. But with this setup there is no way to print the midi in GR-2 as far as I can tell.
It works, though I'm lost on which notes to trigger from Octachron to hit all the pads. Kick is C3, note 36.
Make sure that Background audio is turned on in GR-2, that Link is enabled in both apps, that GR-2 Virtual Midi In is, and that Octacron is set to output to GR-2 Midi in.
Hit play in Octachron to get the pattern looping. Then go to GR-2 and hit record and play. If you have looping turned off in the clip then it should grab a loop OK.
Below is what I’ve got working with a drum rack. The background audio is enabled but I don’t have virtual midi. I’ll give your solution a try and will make a video.
Edit: The “General 16” setting in Octachron works for the GR-2 drum rack.
You can record the external MIDI (not print) I have done it with hardware sequencers and also with iBassist and Reggae Drummer
Thanks. I was thrown off because I was trying it with a User drum rack preset. Apparently there's some setting for which notes play when you set up a custom drum rack.
Looking into that now...
@wim I followed your instructions and was able to get both GR-2 and Octachron IAA working but no luck with printing midi clip:
You can't print the midi clip. You need to live-record it.
Start Octachron playing. Hit record in GR-2. Within the last bar of the Octachron pattern, hit record in GR-2. Link should start the recording at the beginning of the next bar, I think. I haven't experimented with it much yet. Recording to the timeline and then cutting down the length of the clip might be more effective. Can't say yet.
If you've selected a clip to record into, be sure that looping is turned off in the clip so you don't get overlapping notes.
One would assume the higher quality soundfont packs, would be the ones with the largest file sizes. Other than that, how does one find the “good ones” without downloading every single one of them?
I wonder is it possible to have folders for SoundFonts like the one bank that Jim has preloaded, so not to have so many soundfonts to go through?
Aha! Got it working. The big thing I was missing was that you have to record the midi in song mode. I didn’t even know you can record external midi in song mode! Thank you for your guidance. Here’s a video for anyone that’s interested. Make sure you start GR-2 with virtual midi enabled before starting Octachron to ensure that Octachron sees the GR-2 virtual midi port.
Cheers!!
You can record in clip mode too. It works best with looping disabled in the clip though.
It seems to be prohibited to post previews of soundfonts 🤣
Tried it and it worked. The main take away for me: I learned how to record midi coming into the virtual port of GR-2 into clips and into song mode. Thank you for all your help!
Another gem I missed
@wim I just got it to work with Octachron AU and GR-2 IAA in AUM using AUMs virtual ports.
Joy to the world. You can record AU midi into GR-2 drum racks!
What a find @Eschatone! Thanks for sharing.
@Edward_Alexander AI to the rescue. As a test I copied a subset of the files listed on the page (text copy). Then I pasted it to chatgpt and asked it to give me the good ones based on the latest data online. Sure enough it did! Listing the genre, what it is good for etc. Incredible.
The mixer volume faders cannot be cc midi mapped ( it is though possible through parts page ) but would be more efficient to have whole overview over the entire project!
After you add the sampler to a part tap edit to create a new empty sample, select master as the source and minimize the sampler. You’ll get a small floater at the bottom which has a small record button to enable recording.
Currently the start and stop can not be synced to the transport nor beats or bars and won’t work (as far as I know) properly when switching patterns as the recording is locked to a pattern.
did anybody figured out how to change mapping from MODWHEEL to synth knobs ?? by default it tweaks LFO depth ...
edit: just found it in second i asked lol
)) just in case somebody is dumb same way like i ways - icon with crossed arrows above IFX section, "Mod wheel destinations"
Since I updated GR2 moments ago the Groove Rider 2 folder is missing from Files. I did tag it, and it shows up in the tagged list but not in On My iPad. Does anyone have an idea what the issue might be?
Update: a reboot brought it back.
Been waiting on in-depth discussion on the piano roll... what is the consensus on its implementation?
It works very similar to Nanostudio 2's piano roll, except there is also a handle to set probability (NS2 doesn't have that). So for me personally, it's easily one of the best piano roll implementations.
One thing that is 'easy to miss' is the shift button, try holding it down while adjust the velocity with a bunch of selected notes
(Hint, it's used to ramp the note-velocity values up or down).
My favorite piano roll is in Gadget, I figured Jimaudio would nail the piano roll. Thx for the update.
Yep, I really like the piano roll. It's great!
I love the piano roll, I sent this suggestions to Jim:
1.- I would like notes drawn with the pencil icon would remember last note length and default to that, they are often too small for me and requires me to lengthen each one
2.- I would like to be able to move and zoom with the other tools beside selection
3.- When moving a chord the preview only plays the upper note, I would like to hear all notes when selecting and moving them, I use the move tool in scale to make new chords with the same shape.
4.- when you switch the piano roll to the scale notes the view starts waaaay up on the very high notes.
5.- ghost tracks, I would love to ghost see other tracks so I can draw the bass in place
6.- octave up down: you could add two arrows up and down the move notes thing so you can click and go up or down an octave, it's a very used operation
7- move the timeline start point from the clip view: when editing a long sequence its frustrating not being able to instantly play the sequence from any part while editing, for me the ideal would beto move the playhead if you tap on the upper ruler, so it would play from there
8.- double tap to select all: this is an useful gesture that is present in other piano rolls, when having the selection tool double tap should select all notes of the clip
