I've held off buying this mainly due to price (not suggesting it's not worth it but it would have been purchased as a bit of fun and a "suck and see"). Also clip based song construction just doesn't gel with me. With that in mind can I ask a dumb question about the more trad DAW/timeline option in GR2? Does it work in the same way that the Cubasis/Logic timeline does (sans audio tracks)? Each tutorial I have seen that shows the timeline seems to have the same clip/region/parts repeated on it's track, rather than having multiple unique clips/regions/parts.

    TIA!

The timeline is completely independent from the clips and you can record directly to it, and have as many different clips you want

Thanks @jwmmakerofmusic and @GRiker. Will properly watch Doug's video (skimmed it previously). I just need to be able to have multiple parts per track as per usual DAW setup. Lots of other things to like about GR2 from what I've read and seen.

One other question. I watched Doug's video on automation. Can 3rd party auv3's be automated as well as internal synths/effects etc?

I'll test that once back home (unless someone tests it first). At a hockey game. 😃

So for the past 30 minutes after I got home, I tried to figure out how to automate an AUv3 instrument parameter. Couldn't figure the doggone thing out, but that's okay. The build-in effects are more than sufficient for my needs until the manual is released.

Slightly offtopic - I set out to create Minimal Techno, but somehow I started working on a remake of a 19-year-old track of mine called "Dragon Skies". 😂 When I created the original version of "Dragon Skies", I used the same DSK Music soundfonts for the sounds. But now I can layer sounds (three in a part) and create some unique leads and shit.

But soon I will try to produce a Minimal Techno track. Just not as soon as I thought. 🤣

Edit: I am utterly addicted to this app. 😂 Holy shit. I don't think I've found an app more intuitive than this one (at least for me personally). I find myself using its Maximiser more than Grand Finale 2 for bringing my tracks up to -14LuFS. And the more I use GR-II, the more comfortable I become in the environment, which means the quicker I become with churning out music.

Here’s a jam with GR-2 (center of the show), Gadget (drums), GeoShred, IAA in AUM
AUs: Riffler, King of Bass, Rozeta arpaggiator, Piano Motifs.

It’s hard to show everything that’s going on here. So much fun. I can’t wait for the Launch Pad Pro support that’s coming.

    Cheers!

Thanks so much for trying that JW. I'm feeling like I'm about to cave and buy in so I'll have a play myself. Maybe someone else here has some knowledge on automating auv3's?

Looking forward to hearing Dragon Skies. Lovely when those old projects suddenly rise back up!

  • Is this app really great ? I mean it's definitely not a bargain price, so wondering if it's really wow or not.

For me, it’s really great and I’m still learning it. I suggest watching the YouTube videos to see some of what it can do because on a forum you’re going to get a lot of conflicting and even some incorrect info. The videos are scratching the surface at this point but they’re a good start and new ones will get deeper. As far as the price goes, I’ve spent more than that on Friday night pizza.

just press record mode, play, tweak knob you want to automate…

then go to piamo roll and in top menu tap automation button (on right side of note button) - dropfown menu apoeses with list of recorded automations, tap on automation and you see it and you can edit it..

Some AUv3’s dowsn’t work though, so if it doesn’t work, iť’s bug related to that particular plugin.. it was already reported to Jim

Noticed that a clip should be created for automation… and most parameters do show up.. here is Troublemaker..

    Still learning…

A tutorial on the Sampler will be nice..

    Great show here!

  • Finally took the plunge and am having my first play. Looks like it’s going to offer some fun times.

Some bug bears initially. Is there a light colour option as I’m finding it hard to see in certain situations (my eyes are mostly to blame but it doesn’t help). No option to add auv3 fx parts (I think this has been mentioned by others here). I really hope this changes as it’s pretty limiting, at least for my workflow and enormous cache of auv3 fx  Timeline feels a bit clunky on initial play. Is there a way to increase the vertical size of tracks? Last whinge is export options. Stereo wav only? I realised there was no midi export on release but I assume there would at least be stem export.

Anyway, not complaining. Hoping the above will be addresses in future updates. Now for a play!

  • Hey Kids is there a way to print midi to the timeline or can you only print to a clip and paste it across?

  • @Cambler said:

Press record and perform the clip sequence you want with song mode on

  • Two fingers zoom vertically, you have to be on the selection tool

    Thank you!!

  • Probably an answered question, but we're up to 27 pages...

Is there something about the sampler, liked a fixed length, that mangles imports? For example, I uploaded an edited Amen Break of just two bars, and it does incredibly strange things to it, making it impossible (for me) to play the sample back and hear the expected loop. Like it beat matches? And does odd warpy stuff? Kinda weird.

Also, I have to wonder if it's time the mods create a subcategory for this app, as has been done for LP and Cubasis.

  • Every time I reopen the app I find it better. I really want to fast forward to a point where I know it by heart and can have an idea and do a rough sketch in 5min (which I’ll get to eventually)
Meanwhile a manual would be great, even an incomplete one. I have watched every video and realize what a colossal task writing that manual is, so Im waiting patiently before I cannonball it

It's growing in me. The step sequencer need work but sticking to piano roll makes it more fun.

😂🤣 Lol, sorry, but this typo was too funny not to respond to.

I'm more of a piano roll guy myself, and Jim made a great one! Like Nanostudio 2's, but with probability added in for good measure. That said, perhaps an improved Step Sequencer will help those used to GR-16's OG workflow.

    THANK YOU @Eschatone and @cokomairena

If you nudge (use shift) one note of the chord slightly ahead, and then set the remaining notes to PREV, you can govern the probability of the whole collective chord by the condition assigned to the slightly earlier note

Much obliged to you both for your clever thinking on this

this has to go to the wiki, great!

Not sure if this was already covered but another option that seems to work is to place a note right before the chord and use the “mute” or whatever the button is with the speaker symbol, so it becomes sort of a “ghost note” and then the chord following it can be triggered based on the condition of the ghost note. Seems to work for me. Here’s an example where the first chord will trigger 50% of the time based on the “ghost” note trigger result and the second chord will trigger the other 50% of the time. Only one chord will trigger each loop.

We're so immature, mate. 😂 Bwahaha.

So, I can't be faffed reading the rest of this megathread (though I've read all of it since its inception), but have you tried GR-II yet? :)

Hell yes! I preordered it, and have played with it a lot since it was released (not a word!😂). It’s not perfect, but there’s so much functionality in there that’s really good that I think I will be using this quite a bit compared to some or the other apps I have used in the past.

Man, everything I could possibly want is in this app. Well, I had to import my drums and Soundfonts (easy as moving them into the respective folders in GR-II, but...), but honestly its internal synth is so good. The Poison-202 integration is so-so, where using the external Poison-202 AUv3 plugin allows for better sound design. Pure Acid integration is top-notch. All the internal effects are top-notch as well. :)

  • Can you tell me if it is possible to control clips from a controller or if nothing at all can be assigned to clips? Am I missing something?

  • edited February 9

deleted original post - found answer

Was having trouble importing GR-16 patterns but found the thread that explained how to make it work on this page:

    https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/63978/jim-audio-groove-rider-2-released/p19

    To recap:

    • Export pattern from GR-16 to Files and save
    • Open GR2 and click New
    • Share from file in the Files app and select GR2
  • hi,
sorry if this has been asked already - didn't have much luck with the forum search; but it seems Iconica Sketch isn't working with GR-2 ?

someone reported the same issue on the steinberg forum

  • @EdZAB nice work, great idea to use muted notes to determine probability of later ones 🫡

  • @jwmmakerofmusic Do you find GR-2 capable of making ambient music, like you do it with Cubasis 3?
