I've upgraded because I started to have random issues just by upgrading individual apps. It became upgrading then downgrading game until a point when my test mini retina on IOS8 started being more stable than my air running the same set up. After a couple of months I found myself using the one on 8 more which prompted me to move. I'm still running an old version of audiobus and Turnado because I found them the most stable for what I do. I'm glad I've moved for several reasons. Samplr syncs really well with loopy now for example.
No regrets.
It is a personal decision that largely depends on set up one uses. I also use gadget, isem, animoog, Xynthesizr and audioshare and they all work well for me.
NB. I would have never updated to 8 without testing my set up on another iPad as a safety net otherwise it is always a gamble.
@ supadom, I starting to notice random issues on 7.1.3 now too, I'm sure from upgrading apps. I'm just hesitant to move to 8.
I do think apple has lost their way for musicians a bit, but perhaps it's because so many "regular" folks are on apple devices now too? Macs used to be much more isolated to the domain of visual arts and music, so apple had to make them happy. Now they are more concerned with making things work for non music production activities. Will the absolute need for antivirus on Mac come soon too ? We'll see.
Man I don't know what kind of problems people are worried about so much, unless you have an older app you just know won't run on 8.3. Running the latest OS as usually and all my music apps work just fine, no issues. Its not like it's a crash fest for everyone.
@Proto For my viewpoint, I think between the last posts by @Tarekith, @mrufino1 and @supdaom you have a fair answer as long as you add a splash of @ChisG in there too
I upgraded to 8 around Xmas - no issues.
Kept upgrading until 8.3 killed iFunBox support. So I've parked it on 8.2 - no issues.
Everything works as expected. Seamless every step of the way. Genuinely sorry to hear it's not so easy for some ... But the "Apple killed the future of iOS music-making with 8.x, those bastards" variations simply don't jive with my experience, or the experience of my favorite iOS bloggers.
Absolutely.
I started with iOS 8, have almost every major app out there, use my iPad heavily for recording and live use running multiple simultaneous apps and Audiobus. I have only seen a few very minor issues here and there, and most of those were solved long ago - so I'm still not sure what the concerns are that keep people from moving.
Honestly, far fewer stability issues on my iOS 8 rig than my PC based Ableton rig. I guess I've just never experienced the iOS 7 nirvana
I'm thinking of moving from 7 to 8, what's holding me back is that some people (Marcel and Monzo) have reported some nasty timing issues that appear to be iOS 8 only.
ditto - things sync quite well for my purposes on 7...
This may have already been addressed, but for folks updating recently from iOS 7.x to 8.3 who have Alchemy, did all your libraries disappear, or did they make the upgrade intact? Thinking about upgrading today, but I'm wary about having to budget extra time to load in all those libraries from a backup if they are going to get nuked in the process.
I think I did a totally fresh install when 8.0 dropped, so unfortunately I had to obviously reload them all.
When i upgraded i still had my sounds always still in there but i would aware since sometimes the same upgrades seems to do different things on our idevices. The only good thing i still have all the desktop libraries and think i can put them again all in via i-tunes (but not sure since i still hate i-tunes and use it just if i really really need it).
Alchemy is for me still the absolut king on iOS for high quality patches with very smooth morphs. Nothing else can touch it. I mean steamworx is maybe my all-time favourite patch bank ever.
The only reason why im not running ios 8 is because i wasted lots of money the past 2 years on music apps.If you only have a few music apps the decision would be much easier. Also strange that it took so long before the most ios 8 audio problems were solved.
Its that little hope that everything runs a little better compared to the old os.IOS 7 also got problems with midi sync and inter app audio, but must say audiobus always worked perfect.
Can you test if Samplr also syncs with FreEwi and cubasis.Freewi only send start and stop commands but if you put the bpm in Samplr manually it runs very solid and stays in sync for a long time. FreEwi is a little lighter for the memory in the background.Tried your method before but loopyhd and drumjam as a clock source gets out of sync very quick. FreEwi is a free app and if this works im gonna update : )
Finally, I have updated, because the random freezes. Six hours later, everything looks fine, smooth, and I have recovered about 10 Gb (yes, 10 Gb!) of free space. I think that could be by installing/deleting a lot of apps.
No regrets at all. PDF Expert work ok under iOS8.x despite the dev told me it won't (and invited me to buy his new app). Some apps have gone, as Sketchbook Pro (now Sketchbook with IAP), and it looks I have to pay again???
OK. I was able to reinstall the Sketchbook Pro 2.9.1 version from my ipa backup via iFunBox.
My "Memory" app no longer works and its not on the app store either. This app used to really free up a lot of my iPads RAM.
Do you mean this one?

I ran once and seems to work fine, but at second chance it crashed, and my iPad turned off...Next I wasn't able to turn it on! (screams).
Turned on again, but still crashing. Sad. Very useful app.
What a weird thing...when I started Sketchbook Pro (which isn't at the Store anymore), Apple ask me to sign with my niece's ID, when was me who let install her that app bought by me.
Yeah this is the one. It says it was removed from the app store.
Mine was working fine even with IOS8.3. I should have backed it up.
I think Apple had a "cull" a short while back on "memory management" apps, possibly battery management ones too. I had a couple of them because my iPhone 3Gs was constantly running out of space, I just got used to running one every day to clear memory and storage. I noticed they have either gone from the AppStore or they now state something like "memory cleaning function removed". Who knows the reasoning?!
Updated my ipad air from ios 7 to 8.3 and it all works fine.Feels like my ipad runs a little faster after the update.
Remember how you used to clean your bike and it always seemed to go faster
Do you guys think I should upgrade my idpad 2 now before ios9 comes out, wait for ir, or just stay in io7.3? It works fine now, and I don't need any extra stuff from newer ios versions, except if there is performance upagrade. I'm also afraid developers will stop supporting ios7.
Still nothing to get me away from 7.1.2 so far - especially the GB complaints. Something needs to change quick, because I'm starting to run into the inabity to DL apps I want that need 8.x.
The shifting sands of progress here on iOS shift more than most OS's, I do really hope this is a temporary thing with regard to the introduction of 64 bit element of the OS, on other systems this transition too, has been the cause of many troubles.
or take a pill and dance better?
Forsake the medicinals, just use bluetooth headphones with audio apps, psychotropia.
Looks like iexplorer is updated to be compatible with 8.3. I'm not sure how deep the file system access is though http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/
