Ah! Thanks @Carnbot. FB page. Was looking on the main site.
Exactly how I feel. The only reason I've used iPads as long as I have is because iFunbox made transferring data between the iPad and my laptop bearable. Now that Apple has taken this away, I have much less incentive to bother with iPads for music.
I still like drawing with the Procreate app, so maybe I'll buy a newer iPad second hand down the road. Gone are the days of buying the latest iPad the month it's released.
@Carnbot - Thanks for sharing, great news! I hope that GarageBand's .band files are in the 'yes category'.
Reading the details of that description, I'm not all that hopeful for a lot of music apps. Some of them bury the changeable parts / add on dirs - (legitimately changeable parts) - in places other than Documents.
Was thinking the same. I'm glad they worked out what was going on but ultimately I think this is bad news. I was hoping for 'Apple changed something, we found it—all will be back to normal soon'. This isn't that at all. Not only do devs use folders other than /Documents, how many are going to set that flag to true? What else does that flag do?
Restoring Alchemy IAPs? Installing Z3TA+ waves? etc. etc. Not going to work anymore if I read that properly.
Glad I'm still on 7.1.2
So if I wanted to go back to 8.12 I think, how do I do it if I had the back up on iTunes.
Will it overwrite all my Z3TA patches?
No more custom Animoog timbres, either. I wouldn't be able to back up my user presets from KORG Gadget, either, which would be a nightmare for me. There's no other way to back these up.
And as @syrupcore said, many apps that will allow access to their Documents directory still store important files in other directories. With 8.3, many users have suddenly been cut off from being able to access and/or back up these files. Bad times.
I may be wrong, but I think rolling back to previous iOS versions requires a complete reformat of the device.
I'll credit Apple with one thing: the lack of interesting iPad hardware updates, coupled with increasingly buggy and locked down iOS updates, have pushed me back to using my laptop for music production.
And since going back to using my laptop to kick out beats, I've not only found it refreshing how hassle-free the experience has been, I've also been thrilled with how flexible the software I'm using is. I'm using Renoise, Audacity for sampling, and a small collection of VSTs.
It got to the point where I was fighting the limitations of iOS, rather than being inspired by said limitations. With my desktop software, I'm not fighting any limitations.
Sorry if this is an off-topic rant, but I'm guessing I'm not the only one who has had this experience. On the bright side, I don't feel the need to dump $600 on a new iPad, and my current laptop will last me for at least another few years.
Actually, apps doesn't need to implement file provider extensions to import/export files from/to AudioShare (or other file providers). All they need is to use the DocumentPicker. It takes only a few minutes to add this to their code.
Confirmed. iFunBox still works to transfer files to/from the iTunes File Sharing folder in AudioShare in 8.3.
Wow, not my experience at all. Windows music making was a horror of latency, audio driver and compatibility issues for me. I couldn't wait to get off the thing. I can do more, faster, for less money, and a lot less hassle on the iPad. The only comparable hassle-free music making experience I've had has been with Logic, thanks to the Mac's built in low latency. I struggled for 15 years making noises on the PC and while there were good (though expensive) times (Reason, Ableton, Maschine), it was in no way more hassle-free than the iPad.
Sorry for late reply, but no my post wasn't addressed at you in particular, there was an assumption made that people complaining about the file restrictions were resisting change, and I was responding to that.
Such an ignorant statement really pisses me off...
I wish that you didn't say such crap... I have a homebuilt PC with windows 7, with AMD [email protected] and an RMI 9632 soundcard and I have very low latency. I can set it to 32-64ms and run Maschine 2 and several reaktor ens. and a DAW with no hickups.
I would like to see my ipad AIR perform this way lol...
And I can move files and SHARE them from one central point so they are not duplicated etc and tweak system so I don't have dozens of apps installed like stock exchange and business analysis and other shit.
So please....
Sorry feeling a bit jumpy, not sure why.
As this forum is a nice place to hang out, generally friendly and inoffensive I'm not going to rise to that unpleasant reply. But next time you ask me to test something out for you don't be surprised if I don't bother.
Funny thing is I had a WAY better PC experience making/recording music with an old Windows XP machine and a SB Live card. I swear by at least me experience Windows 7 and PC's have absolutely gone backwards with their capability to make music, handle MIDI etc. Give me ios for making music anytime.
Maybe this thread should have been titled... 'iOS 8.3 out of order!'
I'm sure somewhere or somehow a good solution will emerge (fingers and toes crossed). (Maybe iOS 8.3.1) who knows?
I was reading all the praise about the fixes for Auria/Gadget and others.
It's a shame, I use ifunbox just for the odd back up of music related files.
Pc/laptop are still good, don't use it, but it's good, music wise! My main issues with it are mouse and portability.
But it's a good thread in regards that I'm sticking with iOS 8.1.2 for now!
I hope things work out pretty soon, and you guys can get back to that 'everything is alright' feeling..
I used iFunbox for transferring chunks of files from PC to iPad but need it less and less....partly due to having a 128gb model iPad....I use iCloud Drive and audioshare now and they suffice (so far)
Swiss software company WindSolutions claims its iOS tools CopyTrans are still working with iOS 8.3, including file transfers apparently.
I don't have time to test it right now, but maybe some one likes to try?
Being something of a newbie regarding iOS (but I'm learning fast, with all the knowledge on this here forum), I find it somewhat difficult relative to my many years of windows / desktop music making. My 'workflow' doesn't exist anymore - I'm heavily reliant on folders and knowing where all the sound files I use for a project are.
I'm going to have to adapt to a different way of doing things and hopefully, this may get me out of some ruts / repeated ways of doing things.
Personally, ifunbox not working is not (for me) the end of the world, but having just bought Auria (and being rather confused about it) and using Gadget a lot, 8.3 is a move forward.
Nice find....works for me on Windows 7 I installed Copytrans apps free beta. I can now browse the folders on Audioshare or other apps for example and copy and add or save folders to my computer. If they can so it then surely the others will work it out eventually too...
edit: Haven't worked out yet whether it gives the same access as old ifunbox on all apps but this solves a lot of the transfer problems for me. It gives access to the public folder documents and you can browse them unlike in iTunes.
Hope that 'Everything is Alright' feeling, is coming back!..
It will all work out, soon enough!
@Carnbot
nice to hear it worked. I now installed it myself and it is nice how clean and straightforward this piece of software is. It does give very easy access to public documents.
I never used ifunbox much but I have used itools at some point and that actually gave access to everything, whole folder structure of apps etc.
CopyTrans doesn't seem to do that unfortunately, but for quick access to files, it's really nice and it's free.
I will try it and see if it works for Win XP
CopyTrans is how I would get my mp3's onto my iPhone and iPad without using iTunes. ITunes must be installed though.
@PHᐃNTᐃSM could you tell me how you find/backup Gadget presets? I'm gonna need to do this to transfer them over to my new iPad (which I want to start from fresh rather than restoring from a profile).
There seem to be no Mac version of CopyTrans. So that's not a solution for me unfortunately.
In XP I'm unable to install latest iTunes so that's why I need iFunbox classic. Will copy trans still work with older version of installed iTunes?
