Definitely - that and Shine on you Crazy Diamond! Thanks for the comments - it was just a muck about really, I haven't put anything in for months as I've been learning the thing, but there's a few bits in this I can work on.
@Jocphone,thanks for your comments.Yes the whole drums, bass & guitars were all session band I just added synths.I wish I could play the guitar like Richardyot or Marcel or simply at all!:) but I do enjoy writing melodies to a backing track and then trying to come up with interesting lyrics and the sessionband apps are a good fun starting point for me.
@LostBoy85 actually I'm a rubbish guitarist, also currently learning how to be a rubbish piano/keyboard player.
You could learn enough guitar to write songs with in a few short months, it's really not that hard, you just need to learn to play a few chords. You've got a good singing voice and your song for this month was really good, learning the guitar would open up a whole load of possibilities for you.
The keyboard/piano would also be good, it's less painful on the fingers to start with. One big advantage the guitar has is that it's so easy to transpose with a capo, so you need a lot less knowledge of scales and chords. Write a song using G, C and D, but you need to sing it in a higher key, just a stick a capo on the guitar and problem solved. I guess it's also pretty easy to do this with keyboards these days as well.
It's actually surprising how little technique you can get away with sometimes, writing a song doesn't require you to play like Jimmy Page or Hendrix, Bob Dylan wrote hundreds of great songs with minimal guitar or vocal technique.
(edit) Just to go off on a bit of a tangent, I've dabbled with just about every form of art there is (jack of all trades syndrome), from drawing to writing and everything in between and for me there is something special about music, and specifically when playing an instrument.
What I like about playing the guitar is that you can sit and noodle with the thing and stuff happens. It's a really magical thing, some rhythm will just come out of nowhere and form the germ of a song. It's not an experience I've had in quite the same way in any other discipline. Drawing, which I do for a living, has always been a lot harder, and writing which I've also done professionally is the same, coming up with ideas is difficult. But music seems to somehow be easier to channel from the subconscious/serendipity
@Jocphone, thanks for those comments. If only I WAS a muppet, that would be fantastic! My wedding song was Rainbow Connection if that sheds any light on my muppet fandom...
But yes, it is only my scratch demo, if that song makes the cut in July at our sessions it will be very different and I can assure you I won't be the singer!
I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.
Is there a way to consolidate all of the songs in one post at the top of the thread? Or maybe use a soundcloud account that everyone uploads to? I want to check out more of the songs but they're scattered throughout and on my phone that's tough.
Just a thought. I love this thread idea though, it makes us get some ideas into semblances of songs. I've had a lot of song ideas lately as it gets closer to my sessions and even with my mumbling melodies and such, it will make me get those "sung while driving" snippets out of audio share and into some sort of arranged chaos.
Is it possible to create a Soundlcoud playlist? That would at least gather together the Soundcloud submissions, although a few people are using other platforms.
I guess I could add all the submissions in the first post, bit of work for me
First off, trencherman's work on your part @jocphone! As regards my own little piece, I have grown fonder of it which (for me) is telling. A few weeks goes by with a poem or a song and I know in my veins whether something is more or less than my original rush thought of it.
I like your idea about a second voice, although -from the idea of it- this is supposed to be a lonely little song. Also, in real life, I don't share the music I make with anyone else. All a little too honest and revealing Maybe one day.
@richardyot I think there's a good idea here, although I'm not certain what the solution is. We do end up with a lot of discussion and page views it seems for SOTMC, and I think that's just great, but by month's end things are getting a little cumbersome. I'm sure Soundcloud would work, but not so much for us youtubers. I don't have a problem with 'converting' pieces and just posting on Soundcloud.
Is there another or better solution available for playlists? Anyone?
Certainly don't mind helping out with the work if I'm given a large sheet with instructions on it in block capitals etc
Can't believe June is here already. Let's make the most of it, 'on glass' and out in the world...
@JohnnyGoodyear the solution is for me to edit the first post and stick all the tracks in there. I'll try and get around to it
@richardyot Well done you. I think you should put on a smoking jacket and make a few Chairman's Remarks as well Perhaps thank the tea ladies and give someone a watch....
You could setup a Group in Soundcloud - then you wouldn't have to manually add tracks to it - we'd submit those ourselves.
Not so good for Youtube etc... though
Truly inspirational! And quite hilarious in equal measures..
@Fitz - The End of Man
Love the atmosphere and the melody of this track. Can't help but wonder whether slowed down a tiny bit and with the guitar pausing to let the vocals breath some, that they might have been stronger, more brooding.
@JohnnyGoodyear - Wetexas
Another piece with a really strong hook. I actually found this quite uplifting, hopeful.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - My Heart Beats Fast
Really strong work here. You obviously put a lot into this piece and it shows. Love how you manage to keep it together while throwing lots of disparate textures and rhythms in. If I had a couple of tiny criticisms, the piano at the being feels oddly misplaced, a little robotic, something to do with it's timing or how it is quite clipped? That massive bass sound is quite superb and I was going to say ou could afford to get a but nastier towards the end but after listening for the fourth time it has really opened out for me. Good luck with the competition.
@monzo - Backward Drift
What can I say, thought we were going to have to wait until September! I guess we each have our own comparisons we make to each others music. Definitely channeling Robert Wyatt around his 'Rock Bottom' period when your song morphs into that chilled out later section.
Great stuff but you've made the mistake of setting yourself too high a standard that you will have to better each month. At least with mine people only "think surely it can't get any worse.."
Really enjoying this whole Song of the Month affair. Has definitely got me digging in and producing more and it sounds like it is having the same positive effect on others.
I think there is a lot to be said for gut instinct.
Yeah I understand that some things need to be resolved for yourself.
The what-ifs are somehow easier to imagine for other peoples music. Probably need to work that out..
Thanks for the feedback - big compliment with the Robert Wyatt reference - I'm a big fan of his, and in particular his approach to making music. I'll probably avoid the Ruth is stranger than Richard stuff for this thread though
Gadget's opened up a new World for me, even more so when the camera connection lead turns up and I can connect a proper keyboard. Initially I was a bit daunted by the quality of music on here, but it's actually pushed me to make more of an effort. I'm still going to do the weird stuff elsewhere, but creating something more listenable and structured for this thread is a great challenge and a rare attempt at discipline for me.
Thanks Jocphone. That bassline is actually just a long C1 a C2 and a C3 sampled from a Thor patch and thrown into 3 pads in Bilbao. Then I alternate between them, put them in a choke group and have them cut each other off etc and also use the 'pump' filter to add a bit of wobble sometimes. I'm so pleased with how this technique has turned out I'm definitely going to use it in the future with more external sounds (Z3ta, Cyclops, FM4 etc). I find it hard sometimes to get really amazing and nasty basslines out of Gadget because of the restrictions on FX.
Thanks for the comments on my tracks. And thanks also @Monzo .
Going to submit it tonight. FYI I've taken all your advice and edited it down to 5 minutes something and taken some of the sample repetition out.
By the way, well listened re the intro piano chords, jocophone, they are indeed a bit clipped because they are a sample that's spliced to change it from 120bpm to 170. Not entirely successfully, but they are the only other thing from the artist I'm remixing (along with the vocals). Didn't want to time stretch by such an amount so I spliced instead.

The word 'just' has no business in this sentence. Really creative technique. Had no idea there were choke groups in Bilbao even.
Thanks @Jocphone @JohnnyGoodyear
Final version is here. Reduced down to 5.43 as per everyones suggestion - more nuts drums in the climaxes and slightly reduced overuse of the sample as per Johnny's suggestion... more bass. It's getting submitted to the comp tomorrow morning so if anyone can bear listening again and notices anything glaring, let me know. (@Jocphone is right about that clipped piano at the start - but I don't have any time/energy to do anything about that one!)
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 If I had a radio and turned it on and this was randomly coming out of it I wouldn't do anything else but keep on peeling the potatoes and start tapping my toes. Pro stuff, especially in light of the vox samples being set for you.
I'm going to be a wanker and say that for me the song starts at 3.15 when the 'other' drums come in. But any complaints I have are only to do with the generic nature of this genre (to me). BUT even the grumpus I am was really digging it in the second half. Made me want a faster car and no roof, always a good sign.
ADD: GOOD LUCK! Don't forget the little people etc.
Thanks @JohnnyGoodyear for listening again. Geniunely appreciated...
The second half is better - you're quite right... and the minute I chopped out was all from the first half.
I'm not sure the whole track can be climax because you kind of need to build up to it don't you? But I know what you're saying... Hopefully the judges don't stop peeling their potatoes and switch over before 3.15 ...
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 No, no. Not at all. This is THEIR genre, right? I'm sure they'll consider this a sprint
In my clumsy way I was trying to say that even though this isn't my bag of biscuits, once it going I didn't care anymore about the style, just the feel.
@JohnnyGoodyear Actually they (the group that generated the samples and that piano riff) are a pop band. The choice of genre for the 'remix' was mine. The band are the judges I believe - so god knows what they'll make of it.
See orginal track on the video here: https://www.indabamusic.com/opportunities/lewis-lane-converse-rubber-tracks-sample-session/details
Ha ha - thanks, i'll try not to...
@Richardyot,thanks for your thoughtful post earlier. You are right of course but I should clarify that I have tried guitar in years past and I just couldn't get where I wanted to go quick enough,if that makes sense.(I also have fun sized hands which sucks for guitar).I do however own a ukelele which I really enjoy and I too am learning to be a rubbish piano player!
I can play a bad ass 'Triangle' solo when required aswell!
Everyone and their drunk uncle bangs on the triangle, stick with the banjo if you want to get the girls (albeit ones who mostly wear dirndls or the regional equivalent).
Impressive ... Most impressive. I'd like to hear the drums louder, as the interplay between kick and snare should be the foundational element of all genres based on the trap kit. Didn't no less mighty a sage than Huey Lewis advise the world in days of yore that "The heart of rock and roll is the beating?" Or was that a parental advisory?
Anyway, I wish my own drum tracks were louder, so, hefty grain of salt there. Great track, nice composition, mix and execution. Bravo, sir!
On a side note, hated to miss out on May, I commented here and there but did not submit. Hope to return with a squeak of vengeance in June
@eustressor A note was made young Mr. Stress. In a copybook that now bears a blot.
Ha! You should see my High School permanent record! All due respect to TSOTMC juggernaut, but small potatoes, Mr. Goodyear, small potatoes.
