  • Thanks JohnnyBanana ehm, Goodyear. I'll hit you with 2.45, ok maybe 3.45 in June. Interesting we're all seen as what we choose to show of ourselves, our on-line musical avatar. Mine at the moment is 'the loop guy'. Need to shake that off (Tries not to sound overly confident).

Spurred on by all these early entries - here's mine.

It's supposed to be a bit "post rave" (before someone points out that the vocal is cheesy - which it is).

Almost all Gadget sounds (with my new 'effectrix-style midi designer cc template' creating much of the percussion patterns). Made in Gagdet. Mastered in Audio Mastering and then Master Record.

Feedback yerned for, and much appreciated...

  • You know, point of order and all that, if we keep this rate of production up management will be keen to make it Song of the Fortnight Club, mustn't have that :)

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 Matt: I like this plenty, modern music. Not this, not that, not dance, not trance, not EDM, not Icelandic folk, not ambient, not cinema. Some great sounds and very good use of space. If you didn't feed us cheesy vocal samples to help categorize it I don't know what we'd do :)

It is post-rave I guess. Or whatever the chill word is this week. Doesn't matter about that, got a great and clean and somehow sophisticated sound, but my guess is we're (I'm?) talking definitions, because without a narrative (as it were) we don't know what to do with it/what to make of it.

    @supadom - that's a pretty amazing track.

I love concept. I love the funk it has to it, and the attitude. A lot of the words are really great. The "book face" line is genius. Very good. Your voice is pretty fantastic. I can imagine this 6 minute version being great live. In fact it kind of sounds live rather than produced TBH.

Things i might change if it were mine:

    • it sounds a bit too sparce in parts - I'd add some bass or pads to fill the mix a bit

    • I'd think about a more radio friendly version of about 4.5 minutes with the best bits condensed

    • it might benefit from a bit more climax at the end... Maybe getting more dancey, 303?, bass line driven or something. But I don't mind the laid back end either

It's f-ing good though. Nice work.

Reminds me of LCD soundsystem, kind of Air lyric style (sexy boy) and maybe a bit of Mark Ronson thrown in. But it sounds like none of those. It sounds unique.

  • Hey Johnny,I just listened to your track.i really liked it.simple, understated and the vocal nice and er...intimate for want of a better word!:) right...off to listen to Supadoms now..

  • @supadom,cool chilled out vibe mate.i loved the change up at 2mins..ish. I loved the line "befriend you on bookface":) only slight thing for me was the length of it,but that's just a personal thing.Nice vocals mate!
@Matt, dude you had some great sounds in your track.I wish I could space stuff out like that.i particularly liked the weird machine gun kind of sound ( man, there has to be a better way to describe it cos it really doesn't sound anything like a machine gun!!:D) I'm sure you know what I mean tho...cool track.

@supadom - fascinating concept! Original. I like it! Haunting sounds underline the lyrics! Very good. Also the part with no vocals adds to the whole thing! Interesting song. Coherent. Edit: I forgot the mention the vocals: very good!: The urge. The effect you set upon your voice is a really good choice, like a stream of sound is pressed through a keyhole. It adds to the pressing way you perform.

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - interesting soundscape. I see circus artists in space who perform their tricks in slow motion.

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 Like the track, nice clean production and uncluttered. Only constructive feedback would be bring some bass line element in a bit earlier. I like the sub bassy line when it does come in, might want to try layering another bass sound on top with more attack and higher frequencies to bring out bass part. I sometimes listen to bass in my mix on the crappiest speakers I can find, if the bass disappears I try and do something to bring it out. Usually getting it passable on crap speakers makes it sound amazing on decent speakers or headphones.

Edit.. The line you asked about on my trk I think is pitched up reversed guitar sound played with arpeggio setting on samplr.

    +1 Good tip.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear really like the track. The vocals are lofi sounding but that works just right in this track. Very raw, genuine and emotional

  • @supadom Like the vibe of the track. Like the extra production/fx on the vocals around 5min mark. feedback would be maybe edit it down a bit and maybe double up the vocal layers in places or even harmonize some vocal lines

Thanks everyone. @RedSkyLullaby you are so right about the bass line. I didn't really spend enough time on it in this track and that obviously shows. Thanks for the tips.

@LostBoy85 - Thanks. Looking forward to your track. The sound you're talking about is an Abu Dhabi percussion hit with Gadget's GrainStutter effect on it, making a short part of it repeat. I used a lot of different internal Gadget effects on the drums in this track.

The spaced out sounds I did in Wolfsburg using very short, plucked notes and an LFO modulating a very high res filter (so every note sounds very different), with tons of delay and reverb. Oh and some more GrainStutter. The fact you can have 2 effects and 4 LFOs in Wolfsburg make it pretty powerful for weird
    stuff.

@JohnnyGoodYear - thanks. I think you were closest with Icelandic folk. Maybe this particular genre just needs to be called 'Helsinki'.

  • @supadom very good track. Sparse musically, but that's the vibe. I like the bass sounds, the general feeling of weirdness. The lyrics are funny, in a witty way.

Only a couple of minor criticisms from me: I really didn't like the delay on the vocals, just didn't seem to add anything for me, and the track could be a couple of minutes shorter, and also some sense of progression would definitely help, either some additional layers coming in or an unexpected change.

But great song, with an original sound, definitely one of the most individual and innovative submissions.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 For me what this track could really do with is a more consistent groove - everything is so chopped up that it's a little jarring and when I listen to it I can't settle.

Whether that groove is provided by a bass line or a beat, I don't know. But I think if there was more of a groove then the chopped up elements could fit around that in a more pleasing way.

All the sounds in themselves are really nice, the chimey keys, the sampled vocals, the varied layered synth sounds are all beautiful and the overall dynamics with the stops and starts are all good.

  • Thanks @richardyot ...

@RedSkyLullaby 's point about the bass line was so spot on that i've added a more defined bass line (doubled at a higher frequency) and bought it in earlier in the track. Have re-uploaded.

Hopefully it will provide that groove you're looking for Richard :)...

  • @supadom - actually I listened again just now on decent headphones rather than cheap ones - and it doesn't sound sparse, nor does it sound 'live'. It sounds very nicely produced actually. I think it's just a "crappy speakers" mastering thing.

    Great track...

Everybody's got toast! I agree with your take overall but disagree about the vocal echoes; they were my favorite bit :)

Damn you and your subjectivity :)

  • Hi guys,
This is the first time I've EVER posted anything I've done so please be gentle:D
I've used sessionband Rock along with some synths from sampletank into Auria and then used the easy mode on the audio mastering app.
It's just a song about wanting to be a kid again and not having to worry about boring grown up stuff!:D

  • I believe this song was a Number One across large parts of Asia and also the Benelux countries. Excellent video if I remember rightly.

  • Totally agree. With the right haircut, this could be charting on VEVO right now.

  • @LostBoy85 - I think they are joking about it, but that is not doing it justice in my opinion. I think it is a great track!! Good composition, well perfomed, great production. I like it! A complete track. The changeovers from one section to another are really nice (i mean musically, compositionally), I really enjoyed them, they fit very good. One section 'I build a rocket ship...(somewhere else: a tree house) .....' is really very good compositionally, i like it a lot. The vocals are also very good, sounds professional in my ears. I listened to it a few times in a row and as a matter of fact: everything sounds very professional in my ears.

  • Not joking.. Really impressed.

  • Not joking. Totally impressed. Part of the unspoken idea of SOTMC is that in a year's time (or maybe two for us slow ones at the back) we will see marked improvement by way of the discipline of doing. If @Lostboy85 makes the same kind of progress most of us hope for he will have a Number One in Amsterdam and beyond.

Not my kind of stuff, and maybe a little 'We didn't start the Fire'-ish in places, but what the hell, good work. Very looking forward to your sophomore release.

  • @LostBoy85 - wow. That's extremely impressive.

Great production, great chorus, and great 'space rocket' bit (bridge?). I like the fact the chorus sounds a tiny bit punky, amongst the pop.

Your voice is very strong. Everything works together, the song structure and 'change ups' are great. (I think it's got too many parts and should be about a minute shorter though - probably saving the last bit for the 12 inch remix!.)

Yeah, yeah, it's a bit of a cheesy pop song about the 80s (and sure, I don't listen to that type of music all the time because I'm not 14) but I think that's exactly what's it's set out to be and to be honest I can see myself having a great time to it at the end of a drunken night or whatever. It's got so much personality in the music, and to some extent the lyrics which are both great and terrible at the same time :)

Anyway, I love it! Can't wait to hear the next one. Seriously good...

  • Ha ha! Wow, thanks a lot guys for your kind words.I think I was more nervous about sharing that than my wife is about having our first baby due yesterday!!!:D
Unfortunately I have a terrible haircut so sadly no vevo for me!
@marcel thanks mate,I wish I could take the credit but those sessionband apps already sound awesome imo before u even write anything to them.
@johnny,thanks man and yeah I think I subconsciously did that list at the end based on 'didn't start the fire'
    Just a bit of fun.
Thanks for the confidence boost guys!

  • Not my thing either, but I found it very enjoyable and well done @LostBoy85. Is that you singing? I liked the confidence and energy in the vocals.

Best wishes on your new addition!

  • @LostBoy85 Congrats on the soon to be. Now fatherhood; THAT'S an adventure, but there are plenty of us around here who manage to balance the diaper twostep with dupstep (or whatever). Anyway, you've set a high bar, look forward to hearing you exceed it.

Note: Might want to start working your magic on the lullaby genre, sleep is about to be your special friend...

  • @funjunkie thanks mate.yep that's me singing in my car of all places! thanks for giving it a listen.
@Matt thanks a lot dude! I'm glad u got it as 'a cheesy song about growing up in the 80's'. Ha ha! & of course u are right about the lyrics I need to work on that a bit.thanks for your feedback man.
@johnny cheers dude, were very excited and also terrified of course:D

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 definite improvement, sounds good
