Matt_Fletcher_2000 Yep, I can see taking a particular part and changing up the sound, perhaps particularly the bass, but I am still finding plenty to feed the beast inside of Gadget now with Darwin. This might fade a little as the novelty of so many different new sounds wears off a little or I progress to being a little more selective etc. Might take a while. For now I wish there were a way to save sounds in Gadget that have been adjusted in Darwin itself. Can't seem to figure that out (beyond just saving the whole song).

Yep. Darwin feels a bit of a break from the other gadgets to be honest. You can't save any presets with Darwin at all (all the other Gadgets you can). You also have this weird thing with going into the iM1 app to make changes.

I must admit to not really feeling any of the Darwin stuff yet. There's a lot to wade through. There's a couple of nice 'organs' that were used a lot for that classic 90s house bass sound. Few pads maybe.

I find drums on a keyboard a bit weird - and it just makes the sound (unlike the drum gadgets where you can tweak the pitch, length, and pan of each drum). Might be hidden jem sounds I guess.

I guess the main thing I need to get over is if I find a good sound (particularly a distinctive pad or effect), I have a distinct feeling it's likely to have been heavily used in hundreds of tracks already and I quite like the idea of using all my own original sounds. I know, however, it depends on how you use stuff.

I'll keep going through the presets I think. The quality of the sounds does sound very full and thick - so it would be cool to use on tracks.

Agreed, I don't understand why Korg didn't give Darwin multiple screens (like most other gadgets).
The control knobs at the bottom are a bit limited.

I like adjusting a sound while composing and switching back and forth to iM1 is not ideal.

Imagine how nice it would be to have something like iM1's 'Easy' screen in Darwin, combined with the automation options of Gadget.
Wish Korg would add that in the future..

@R_2 Agreed. I wonder if they felt elements of 'well, this is plenty, easy job, loads of sounds, keep the kids happy, no need to spend an extra three months on this, out the door, on to the next thing...' Not complaining, it's a steady six point five, but would have been nice to have a nine :)

  • Tweak the VDF and away you go...

  • What are some good midi apps to drive drum patches inside the M1? Step poly does not work great for drums. Anything pattern based?

(1). Gadget already installed, (not open).

(2). Downloaded iM1, played around with it for 10 minutes.

(3). Then opened Gadget, (whilst iM1 was open).

(4). Questioned about intergration etc. (preseds yes of course).

    (5. Played around with Darwin in Gadget.

(6). Then installed top IAP's, tested them.

    (7). Then downloaded 2nd IAP's.

    All is well...

Not sure if the issue was tackled already but following this step-by-step = all good here (Air 1 / 8.3)
    Thanks for this @KING777

And Holy-Nostalgia iM1 ! I do see what the fuss has been about: more inspiration than one can shake a stick at.

  • I read somewhere that every drumsound in a kit could have his own filter (cutoff) setting,is this true?Anyone tried?I know that you can do it for tune or decay but filter?

  • edited May 2015

It's possible to have filter offset among other parameters per sound. Envelope is on the VDF page :)

    City in Australia!

@taroface Erm, just out of an ongoing interest into folks and their relative awareness of geography, whereabouts in the world do you call home? This is not a knock, I'm guessing that the proportion of folks who knew/know of Darwin as an Aussie city is much high in the UK and any former colonies (US apart).....could be wrong.

  • What next, they start naming the new Gadgets after towns in West Yorkshire (UK):

    Luddendenfoot, Mytholmroyd and Triangle ?

Until recently I was in NYC. I had actually ruled out the AUS Darwin because I couldn't see a thematic connection. Am I missing something embarrassingly obvious about this city...???

Well, let's see how the Gadget/Korg boys position it, but it's brand is largely 'way-the-fuck-up-in-the-north', perhaps we should ask our AB friends (@Michael) what they think....of course, it is, you know, Darwin (talking of brands :), evolution of the species, survival of the fittest, natural selection AND the Beagle; now that would be a great name for a Gadget...

  • I think they're big sillies naming them after cities. Welsh towns, now that would be more interesting - 'I used Eglwyswrw for the rhythm, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch for the bass...'

And Sosban Fach for extra percussion ;)

You can get ointment for that

Putting aside the 'citular' requirement for Gadgets (which often seem to have some surplus connection), we could be seeing Korg's frequent nod to their workstation line as an 'evolution.'

I think I recall this being something they emphasized with the M3, making sure to note it as successor to Trinity line (with dollop of Oasis), and of course M1 before it and Kronos thereafter.

Then again, that's just ubiquitous ad-speak.

Another angle could be M1 = fittest: the best-selling keyboard (of all time?) that selected most cutting edge elements (the sequencing, PCM sampling/synthesis, effects) for all-in-one box, forcing competitors to adapt.

  • The M1 was not the best or most advanced at anything in particular when it came out, there were others that were better in this area or that. What the M1 had was the immediate impact of impressively immediately-usable sounds out of the box, that sounded better than a DX7, and better than any analogue synth, better than any CZ synth, and better than a lot of the Roland LA synths, because (and mainly because) there were lots of layered effected patches that integrated a ton of lush reverb, straight out of the box. Later synths beat it in most areas — the SY77 for example, and I remember my Emu Proteus really surprising me when I first got it, it had almost Mac-like usability and obviousness and insanely great sounds.

  • edited May 2015

It would be nice to have acces to the Proteus and all of the Emulator sounds. I was wondering what you mean by the Proteus having a Mac like usability.

  • Oh yes, an Ios Proteus would be a good call!

  • Always thought Proteus was well named; water God and all that who (and this is the bit I like) would only answer to those capable of capturing him.

  • The Proteus samples are available free online. You could download them and put them in bs-16i .

  • Pirchi do you have a link for the Proteus sounds?

  • Hell yes please :)
