Devs can only generate 100 codes per app update, so this wouldn't be a viable solution
Note is a reasonable slab of Ableton Live for under £10. The idea that a useful IAP that costs £3.99 is 'profiteering' is ridiculous.

Have to agree there, been keeping one eye on This conversation, my own personal feelings is that it's pretty unfair to throw the word greed about when it concerns a company that's given so much to the music making community over the years, admittedly "given" is a relative term, but I don't mind supporting these guys one bit because without them and their innovation the music making landscape globally would be a very different place..
I never used that term.
I think £14 for the full priced thing is a good deal, and the current sale price a steal. But as someone who has spent thousands on their ecosystem already, I just thought it would have been a nice gesture if it had been included with full versions of the desktop software. Even my local pub has a customer loyalty scheme, and I don’t think I’ve spent thousands in there…well…not recently…
No, but I’m sure two major software companies could work out a way between them, if they really wanted to, or Ableton could provide users with a credit note or something via our accounts.
So no, I would never suggest they are ‘profiteering’, that would be offensive, as well as ridiculous. But as a long-term customer I do think they’re a bit stingy sometimes.
Sure, I would like Note to be given away for free too, given that I have Ableton Live Suite. But the cost is insignificant, so as they've decided to go 'paid' for everyone, I don't think it's greedy for them to help fund more development of the app.
I would like a full fat version of Ableton Live on the iPad, of course!
Again, I wouldn't suggest they're being greedy - the less-harsh 'stingy' kinda covers my feelings on it. I'm not going to lose sleep over spending another £14, after the substantial amount I spent on Max4Live devices and VST's over the weekend...
My point is it wouldn't have made a huge dent in their profits to include it as a thank-you for customers that have already spent a lot on their desktop versions. It's not a big deal, just a bit...meh.
I'd happily pay £14 for that. Maybe more...
Thinking about it, the Affinity suite I bought a couple of years ago had unlock codes for the iOS versions, so there are ways it can be done.
I wonder if it's primarily due to how much of a headache it would be to make that link on iOS.
Could be. With the Affinity Suite, the basic apps were free, but with a paid IAP unlock. Suite owners were able to add our purchase codes and unlock them for free.
that's awesome.
And the Full aces Drift IAP is great news! IAP signals toi me that the project is testing the waters to be expanded even more
"We're losing money on every sale, but we'll make it up in volume" - Last thing a company tries to rationalize to itself before it goes under.
If you already have an established brand, then make the money where you can make the money. You've done everything you've done to get to this point so that you can charge people because they have proven to you that they will pay for your product. Let them continue to do that so that you can continue to make good products for them.
Note is ranked where it is in the app store because people bought it. I use it. I don't care about all the crap that is outside the Ableton ecosystem because there is absolutely NO mobile product on the market that has as tight of integration with Ableton itself that Note does. None. Every device on Note is the exact same device in Ableton, all clips, samples, and automation as well, and it transfers 100% over an easy cloud solution. And those also transfer to Move and to Push 3 SA. Show me another $7 product that does that? You can't, because it doesn't exist.
I find it odd that the complaint is that some folks want ableton to give note functionality away for free and that they are a large corporation that should absorb it. And it seems that a lot of those same folks also want all this "non ableton ecosystem" additions in the application because it doesn't compete with "other mobile apps". To me, if Ableton IS a large corporation with bunches of users, then they have enough of a user base to build the Note product with the absolute most ableton ecosystem features possible because they have a large enough user base for the Note product that the current Ableton product owners are their target customer. It was stated that they are a large company, so Ableton should actually be doing everything to make THOSE users have the best experience with ALL of their products. This is exactly why they should prioritize those features in Note, and I'm 100% glad that they do that.
$4 for an IAP that is not required to use the drift functionality is a great deal. And if you've already shelled out hundreds (or thousands) of dollars for Ableton products, who cares about paying $4 more? People that use Note for what it is intended for, which is all that Ableton should care about. It really is strange to me that the viewpoints are still here that don't understand the intent of the product.
Came here looking for discussion of new additions to Note. Found two pages of bickering about a $4 optional IAP. lol
Here's something to really be outraged about - Note still doesn't allow anything but 4/4 time signature. Let's storm the barricades! Who's with me?
It's in good company, my MPC Live 2 running the latest firmware only supports 4/4... 🙄
But more than happy to throw a couple of bucks to Ableton for the Note IAP - they have turned my Move from good to great with free firmware updates over the past 6 months. 👍
Could it be there are two groups of people on this thread who simply don't agree?
Why should they? Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, no?
When I want to waltz I just set up a 3-bar loop and my “bars” are 3 measures each. Not perfect but it works in a pinch!
Fair enough. I know I’ve spoken my peace and am ready for the conversation to move on.
What I will say for the “full drift” feature on the merits, is that for me it hints at a workflow where projects bounce back and forth between Note and Move, with composition/improvisation and automation happen on Move, and sound design and fine MIDI editing happen in Note. I just got a Move last week and was wondering if it’d end up replacing Note for me, but I see some real potential with a workflow that integrates both. Ultimately it’d be amazing if you could plug a Move into an iPad, and work on projects stored on the Move using Note’s UI and DSP and the Move’s pads, buttons and knobs. I’m not holding my breath for that, but both products are developing and improving rapidly so who knows?
It also reminds me that I’m still waiting for Logic Pro on iPad to improve on the current Playskool interface for Alchemy. Between Note and Loopy Pro 2, it’s getting hard to remember why I’m paying for Logic.
If you are saying, in some form, that people should discuss such a thing...
Could it be that those two groups of people on this thread simply discuss their differences in opinions? Why shouldn't they? Everyone's entitled to a healthy debate, no?
Nobody is angry with anybody, it's just conversation. This thread has been dead for weeks, and now something significant changes in the Note platform, and nobody is supposed to discuss it?
If that is NOT what you were getting at, then I retract this statement (to you specifically).
I'm curious what part of it you consider enshitification, feature creep? or the addition of iaps? Like I say not a judgment just trying to understand the rationale here.. I'm okay with it myself, if I want new packs or whatever for live I have to pay to unlock them, I don't see them being behind a paywall as a form of enshitification, its just a way for legit content creators and developers to be paid and keep the whole train rolling..
Clearly Ableton should raise the price of Note to $50 so that their $4 IAP is more acceptable.
One of the main objectives for releasing Note, so I've read, was to encourage more users to buy into their desktop ecosystem, borne out by the total lack of integration with other apps on the iOS platform.
And considering the relatively low price compared to other beat-makers, I doubt they were hanging their hats on this one being much of a profit generator (in its current form).
Taking the above into consideration, 'volume' is exactly what they're after.
Absolutely. And a main tactic of major brands across the globe is to encourage brand loyalty, with their customers acting as advocates for the brand and recommending their products to others. Customer reward schemes, are an established marketing strategy businesses use to build stronger relationships with their customers.
So I was a bit surprised, as a loyal customer for many years, Note wasn't included in the desktop versions of Live. What's a tenner to a company that's already made thousands from me (including an upgrade of a couple of hundred quid I had to pay for so I could actually use Note with the desktop version)? It would have been a nice gesture, a thank you.
I couldn't care less about the price, I spent over £60 on apps last weekend, and am already eyeing up a batch of Max4Live devices for this one. But why would I go out of my way to be a vocal advocate for a brand that doesn't value me as a loyal customer? Even established brands dish out the occasional 'thank you'.
Because if Ableton has 100K users and 50K of them bought Note, that would be 350K in revenue. The add-on would be another 200K. That's a half a million dollars. You are funding its development. Who knows if it becomes such a hit with ableton users that they all just buy it, by giving it away you just lost that opportunity. Again, if you already spent so much on ableton, 7 bucks is nothing and you just impulse buy it. They market it on their site so everyone that goes to the site see's that product. It would be crazy not to grab 7 dollars from each of them. This is exactly why the app is consistently ranked high in the app store for sales...because people are buying it.
I don’t have a desktop so I don’t use ableton as a daw. Is the Note still worth it? Kinda reminds me of the Reason Figure app, which I love for capturing quick music ideas on the go. Does Note do anything different or better to rationalize picking it up?
Well, minus Apples 30%, plus payment provider fees, customer support costs, management, development/updating costs, tax etc. But I get your point, every little helps.
If it’s an important income stream for them, and worth more than generating a bit of goodwill for its loyal customer base, then fair play, but we don’t know exactly how many copies have been sold - it’s currently sitting between Testere Super Saw and Line Hum.
Anyway, I hope it does help the company as I’m pretty well locked into their ecosystem.
I’ll drop out of this now, I’ve made my point and will just be repeating myself otherwise.
