Alpha is pretty cool, sounds somewhat like brass overtones but i havent found any use for it, yet

Hm, interesting to see that you bother to look at the notation when the note representation hasnt much to do with what you hear. I mean change the tuning to whatever u come up with and it will sound totally different while still looking at the very same notes.
Why do you do this? Is it just the way u r used to do it, or do u have a specific reason for it?
it's not only about the tunings, it's also about what you play, the notes, and the instrument (sound). And timing also. What seems dissonant can very well be consonant with the proper timing and context.
But like I said, I'm in the learning phase. I know very few things about microtuning. Indeed some things work and some things don't. Like rhythm. A tango rhythm is good for tango music, and might be totally displaced in heavy metal music. So it is with tunings. Some tunings are for certain instruments, the natural scale of these instruments. Transferring these tunings to completely different instruments (with different natural overtone structure), it won't work.

Before I could even comprehend what an EMS synth was, I'd been desiring a piece of gear that made sounds that they all could. Never having seen any EMS gear live in my 39 years of synth playing / owning / building, seeing the availability the other day of iVCS3 V1.2, and all of the positive commentary as to it - blew me away. And so has owning it, for the last 2 days. Brilliant work!

OK, if this has been covered before, i apologize.
Have had iVCS3 for awhile, but haven't used it much (for no good reason).
Yesterday i open it on my ipad and a preset is already sounding.
i can't stop the sound or turn it off.
if i change presets, the new preset sounds immediately once it is loaded.
It's as if the iVCS3 has a 'hold' function permanently enabled.
Many other synth apps have this option but on the iVCS3 i can't figure out how to disable 'hold'.
When i've played with the iVCS3 in the past,i don't remember this being an issue.
i have the latest iVCS3 update as well...
any help is appreciated
Describe the patch(es) - which presets are you referring to, or if it is one of your own patches, what is the matrix doing regarding output routing, what is the sequencer doing, and what is the envelope off setting?
Don't think the patch/preset is a factor.
Continuous sound from all patches/presets.
These are all bundled/purchased patches.
I haven't made/saved any of my own sounds.
Of the Sequencer/envelope etc. I know little.
Could the sequencer/matrix be triggering the patches continuously?
Again, it's like the iVCS3 has a 'hold' function.
You probably have something connect to the speaker pins in the matrix. Select the init preset and it should go away.
There are numerous patches that sound automatically. The keyboard only works with limited patches as the keys functionality needs to be patched into the matrix. The VCS3 was developed primarily as an instructional tool for electronic sound synthesis and this was before a keyboard was the standard input. As a result, patches for the synth can be made that bypass the keyboard altogether and simply pump out sound continuously.
It's a noisy beast, what do you expect?
There are a pair of L/R mute switches if you just need to hear yourself think for minute, center bottom screen (by the joystick).
I am home from work and will endeavor to figure this out and taking all your thoughts into account as well.

I highly recommend watching Hazel aka Digital Jeepney's iVCS3 tutorials to get up to speed. I believe there are 5 tutorials. She covers a lot of ground in 3-4 minute segments so get a pad and paper, crank up the tutorials on one device and iVCS3 on another.

When using the iVCS3 Oscillator as an AU within Garageband, is there a way to get the GB keyboard to control the amplitude envelope of the iVCS3 Osc and not just the pitch? I'm getting some great stuff by sequencing it in the piano roll but it would be nice if there were a way to send it note-offs.
(I know iVSC3 presents separate AUs for its Oscillator, Envelope, and Filter in other DAWs, but GB seems to only expose the Oscillator for use).
GarageBand has supported AU Effects since version 2.2.
iVCS3 AU Envelope, Spring Reverb, VCA and VCF are available in GB's AU Plugins section.
Those are great! I had no idea you could use the samplers to modify the patches over time or use the meter in that way. Plus the sequencer looks handy for evolving textures.
I'll have to put it back on my radar, I kind of dismissed it as a very clever recreation but of limited sonic potential.
I'm confused about the Envelope Shaper section and ENV AUv3. Is it possible to manually trigger a one-shot envelope, or does it always loop as soon as it finishes a cycle?

I'm glad! It really shows how the synth is a product of its time, when even some of the language around synthesis hadn't fully settled into its current form.

I'm glad the manual is online. I'm very not into having to remember where I stashed paper.
I just remembered that the app has the manual embedded as well (Three-dot menu → User Guide → Book icon). I think it's for a later version since it mentions the Synthi A. I wish iVCS3 had an IAP for a re-skin with that layout which would fit better with the screen in landscape orientation.
