    Hey everyone!

I will just have to thanks everyone who understand this move. Again, this is something we're just doing during NAMM. It is pretty gutsy, and I wasn't expecting so much reaction from it, to be honest.

It raised plenty of questions, some people understand it, some people hate it, some people love it. We were pretty much prepared for that.

It gives the opportunity to anyone with an iPad to start creating music. More people on board also means more understanding of what people want / don't want / expect. In the end, this will hopefully benefit everyone. Making the perfect app that suits everyone's need is impossible, but making a solid app with a concise feature set is.

Part of this event was also to get a little bit of exposure during NAMM, so the semi-pro / pro crowd can see what's possible to do on an iPad. Sure, BM3 is only "showcasing" part of that, there's plenty more apps out there with the great collection of AUv3 plugins and other DAWs available.

Let's not jump to any conclusion now, let's just enjoy the moment, and welcome everyone to join our ranks!
BeatMaker 3 will still be updated, improved, polished, that's the main goal. Plenty of exciting things to come.

    Have a good day!

    Cheers,
    Mathieu.

I downloaded the app yesterday for free. Thanks!

Still I think it's a pretty stupid move. It undermines also the trust in de iOS ecosystem where the same expensive app can become free the next day. I would even go as far as saying that this whole gesture shows the bankruptcy of the whole app economy. It just comes down that a dev can and/or will do with his/ her app to get exposure. Sad!

The target of so called NAMM people makes the argument even more flawed. (Semi) Pro's with the money should get it Beatmaker for free, and the ordinary iOS musicians crowd that supported the quite pricey app should understand this... I think this is an even more horrible scenario/ thought. If you went, as you said, seriously through this kind of thinking. Why not initiatlly give it away from free to start to build a seriously user base and then slowly raise the price. Or set the intial price a lot lower than the $19.99. I just don't get the strategy to start with a quite high pricepoint, double it soon and after that giving away an app that even was $39.99 for free so that the semi/pro's can get start working with it. It smells a like a cheap publicity stunt and if you are successful in getting this publicity and attention probably more devs will follow this kind of strategy, leading as said above to the bankruptcy of the app economy, because people without deep pockets will think twice of buying expensive apps. On the other hand it could pave the way for to a new dawn of users jailbreaking their iOS devices, because in that case you don't have the feeling of devs ripping you off with expensive apps that in the near future will be free.... so why wait till those expensive apps get free while you can have the for free with a jailbroken device.
So I totally understand while paid users of Beatmaker are frustrated. A lot of them just feel ripped off and being played especially because you use the argument to widen your userbase with the (Semi-) Pro's (the folks with the money) should have it for free just to get acquainted.

A well reasoned statement that I agree with, if this was Intua's intention from the start to eventually give away the app and fund its development via IAPs it would have been nice to know that from the start, if this is the case now, it would be nice to know, or if this is to bring music to the masses then why not just make it free from now on.

I don't know how many app makers have a precise marketing roadmap for their apps let alone will/duty to explain themselves to customers.

I personally don't care about the reasons for their actions nor do I think I have the right to know them. I have a right to a decent product that works well and is supported which I think is the case with BM3 just ad it was with BM2.

To be honest, saying that a decision is stupid without knowing the actual reason for that move is err....stupid.

What would you say if the 'Skoda' you bought, you later found out was now been hired to you!

If the original contract had a clause that it would not happen I’d be absolutely livid, would feel cheated and would park it in friends garage.

Did Intua say that they are going to apply subscription to their current app?

Now you see how physical things and virtual things don't equate, I said 'hired' and you presume subscription. Intua said they are not moving to the subscription model, but not as yet IAPs for things other than content.

So far I am a proud owner of Intua’s Beatmaker 3. I’ve paid for it and with this I’ve contributed to its egsistence (more proud). This whole blame game is a storm in a teacup.

When/if things change I’m more than willing to discuss but at this point it truly is an absolute waste of time. If people feel cheated they’ll have to deal with that themselves as feeding this echo chamber ain’t gonna change a thing.

I agree with you Brambos. It is unbelievable how people are so ungrateful. Man, I really can’t believe what I’m reading. I personally paid for the app. I’m actually really happy for those that got it for free now. Why? Cause that’s the way we all should be. Happy when others get blessed. Sooner or later you’ll get blessed too. It wasn’t our time.

This just goes to show how polluted and self righteous humanity has become. Just because a business owner decides to give his product away for free for a few days, all others who previously had possibly said good things about this business owner, now are saying “crucify” him! Wow, kind of reminds me of what we did when our own creator gave his only son to us to save us and forgive us from our sins, we said “crucify” him, while just a few days before all we’re screaming Hosana to the King! Most of you know that I’m talking about Jesus Christ.

How does this fit in, well, it just goes to show that after almost 2,000 years we haven’t changed a bit.

My suggestion, speak your heart out, it’s okay; that’s why we have open respectful forum where we can all speak and have disagreements. But let’s not throw dirt on such a noble and gracious move by a well respected and honorable developer.

Remember this is just my humble opinion. And I’m ok if you disagree.

Peace, love; the greatest is love!

Some time ago you paid [x amount of money] for BM3 because you felt the value of it was proportional to the asking price at that time. What someone else pays for it today is of no consequence to you because you already decided it was worth its price.

Don’t confuse feelings of jealousy with unsavory business practices. They’re two very different things. I’m convinced there are no bad intentions in this move.

Respect, but may I ask if you're just a Christian for a few days, or it's more permanent.

Permanence, or the attempt to adhere to this, you have my respect.

A few days - this would confuse me.

If the intent is to bring music via Beatmaker 3 to everyone, this I fully respect, why only a few days.

  • No really. I had to work hard for my cash too. Yet it just really depends on your heart. Do you get happy when others get blessed? Ultimately that’s the question. From what I’m reading, the majority doesn’t. Which again, just goes to show where we all are currently as a human race.

Do I get angry when a homeless person gets a free lunch and I just paid for it? Absolutely no.

We need to see our hearts first.

I can totally understand that. It’s the anger being directed at Intua that is unrelatable to me. Pissed off in general, sure. Pissed off at someone other than yourself, not so sure.

I believe our societies have been breeding and normalising this intolerance for many years. I’m not religious, but I’m with you on feeling good when others get something good. There really is enough good to go around if only people can see where the real greed hides itself :)

There's a voice of reason. I can't say I'm too shocked at some of the responses here. There was a time I would have been, but I've learned not to overestimate.

Regarding whether this is a good move by Intua or not... I doubt it hurts them, but it could help if it broadens awareness and their user base, or sells more of their other products in the future. BM3 has a certain value, and those of us who paid for it, recognized that value. That value doesn't disappear because they gave it away for free. The value is based on how good and useful the app is, not how much it could be acquired for at its lowest cost. Otherwise sellers would be shooting themselves in the foot every time they offered a sale on anything.

We can revisit this crazy thread a year from now and maybe see if it was all a big to do about nothing. My guess is BeatMaker will still be popular in whatever form it's in. It depends on the health of the iOS music-making market, which Intua has little to no control over.

It does not grate my cheese at all so I obviously just landed on this planet. What’s cheese even? We don’t have that where I’m from. But if I get upset now is there still a chance I can be a human too?

Yes, being pissed off, and then completely irrational because we're pissed off, is definitely a human characteristic. It's not something we all aspire to.

    Horrible.

I wonder how many of those thinking a £40 - £0 price cut is a wonderful thing, paid £40 for the app? Actually I don’t need to wonder, the answer is none.

    Tossers.

What’s in it for ME? Could I get some free sound packs out of it? Who cares if the ship is sinking. Is the ship sinking? If it is sinking then who cares if I get free sound packs or that intua are giving their app for free.

Is the ship sinking? Maybe they’re just sending out the crow.

What if they know something we don’t? What if they know that iOS 11.3 screws up all the audio and this is the end of all this?

What is the actual worth of a software application?

What’s in it for me? Is this how we can finally define humanity?

If the price is low it shifts in high numbers, it it is high it shifts in low numbers. Market forces? Now I know what Beatles meant when they sang ‘the inside is out and the outside is in’.

Apple and all the other big tech companies are more than prepared and able to shaft all and everyone of us to pay for dividends, yachts and shiny bling.
The meek will inherit the earth, what’s left of it! ;-)

True, that'll be the robots then.

  • good luck to INTUA. hope it works out for them

Since Jesus and Hitler stopped by (!), Buddha can’t be far behind:

Y’all may have heard of the “4 Immeasurables”, four energies when ignited in people that become self sustaining, energies that are truly bottomless and that endlessly benefit all that share in them.

One is called mudita in Sanskrit, translated roughly as appreciative joy at the success or good fortune of others. It seems to be sprinkled throughout the thread, alongside its opposite. One way is life giving, the other not so much.
