Recently got X2 what a. great tool for sequencing. Find it very user friendly on the Iphone. A lot to like including it works standalone so I can quickly capture ideas, and easy to learn as it has a manual.

I need some help with a problem I found when working on an uptempo latin dance groove in 12/8.
The tempo feels like a 4/4 to the listener or dancers 1-an-a, 2-an-a, 3-an-a, 4-an-a,

I could not get the bpm to relate to the tempo of the 4 on the floor instead of the 8th notes.
I also imported some drums/percussions midi from DrumStudio into X2 and any swing or groove settings were all there! But anything in 6/8 or 12/8 I could not use because of tempo issues. The workaround I tried making it 4/4 with triplets unfortunately made what was 1 bar before, become 1 and a half bar long

I understand that ''for simple meters, the lower number of the time signature is the beat value, that corresponds to the BPM of the tempo. For compound meters like. 6/8 and 12/8 the beat value is typically 3 times the lower number of the time signature, In the case of 6/8 and 12/8, this is three eighths, or a dotted quarter''

@SevenSystems thanks for listening and a request for a solution in X2

    .

  • @sisterkate, thanks very much for your report and your kind feedback.

I'm really happy to get some input on the implementation of odd meters, because frankly, I'm not very experienced with them myself and 99.9% of people seem to compose in 4/4 or some other "standard" meter, so I wasn't totally sure about the correctness of the current way time signatures work in Xequence.

I will get back to you on this topic shortly and if it's straightforward enough to do, a fix will be provided in an upcoming update to Xequence.

  • 12/8 is felt as 4 beats per measure with each beat being divided into triplets , 3 “8th” notes instead of 2.

6/8 is felt in 2 with each beat being divided into triplets

  • This has probably been already discussed buy how can I change the midi out on an existing track? On Xequence 1 it was very easy (click on the wheel icon and...just change midi out). Here I don’t find a way to do that without creating a new track...

Xequence 2 by default manages tracks automatically as you noticed, so they cannot be re-assigned to different instruments anymore.

However, if you prefer the old way, you can just disable "Automatically manage tracks" in the "Project" tab on the "..." screen, which will fully return to the "old" way of manually managing tracks for that particular project.

  • For anyone still on the fence whether they should upgrade to Xequence 2: Today is the last day it will be available at the reduced price of $9.99.

Regarding Audiobus. Could someone tell me if I’m doing this right?
If I load pure synth into Audiobus, I also need to open it outside of Audiobus to hear sound in Xequencer.

Hi, there’s one really simple thing you’ve done wrong. Select “Audiobus” as the output for the track and not “Audiobus 3”. Then you will not need to load the standalone app.

The “Audiobus 3” destination would be used if you weren’t loading Xequence into Audiobus.

Here’s a preset that will work to get you started.

    http://preset.audiob.us/AxCYhuTbLSwzphr

[edit] whoops. Gimme a second to include external controller and midiflow scales.

Hello! I've been trying to set a session up in the same way as this, using Rozetta in Audiobus and Midi Thru in Xequence 2 to record and send back to a synth in Audiobus 3.

At the moment I can only get midi notes to point at the currently selected track in X2.
Multitrack midi recording is enabled in X2.

Please can someone let me know if its possible to record midi thru to 2 tracks at the same time? eg Rozetta Rythm & Bassline, midi notes recorded in X2, then Thru back into Audiobus 3?

I've selected Audiobus as destination (not Audiobus 3) then chosen each midi channel, but right now all notes are sent to the currently selected track in X2...🤨

    Hi,
Using xequence 2 on an iPad air 12.3.1. with audio bus.
No matter what I do I can't get the system settings in xequence to persist. Meaning, I set up my settings with midi in on...no wide track labels..etc. I then save the xequence project and the audio bus session. When I then reload the ab session the sequence settings are back to default. I load the xequence project and they are still at default. This can't be right, right?
    Thanks in advance.

A followup here: Just to clarify -- Xequence's settings are NOT saved in an Audiobus preset or project. Everything you set on the "..." screen is saved per installation, not per project. So maybe that's where the confusion comes from? (It would possibly make sense to actually save a few of those -- for example the MIDI sources etc. -- as part of an Audiobus preset indeed. But it would also increase the confusion even further).

    Hi @SevenSystems
    Thanks for the response.
I thought I had resolved the issue by opening xequence first. I checked the settings page and my wanted changes were there.
Then cleared ram, and brought up ab and loaded the preset. Went to xequence settings and they had reverted to default.
I may have started this session in xequence 1.....not sure. BTW I am saving / loading both xequence and ab projects.

Have I said how much I love xequence? :-) I do.

    Only a cpl feature requests.....

1 some sort of "takes" system. I'll have a loop going and I suk so it takes me many many iterations to get a decent performance. Maybe auto create "daughter" tracks on end of loop?

2 a big one:-) ...I use this iPad rig live playing with other musicians and use tap tempo realtime using link/midi clock.
When I try that with xequence and tempo changes there are big screw ups:-)
In other words start stop is not important .....I trigger loops and sequences in real time.

Thank you for a great sequencer! Immediately felt "at home".

  • @no1normal Sorry, MIDI Thru currently does not respect the Multitrack Recording settings, it always routes to the current instrument. This is something that is going to be looked at for a future update though.

  • @FlowingRobes thanks and happy to hear you feel at home in Xequence 2 land (or as most seem to officially call it now -- "X2" 😎).

When Xequence doesn't save changes to the settings, it means that it has crashed or was killed by iOS due to low RAM or battery before it had a chance to save them.

A "takes" system just as you described is the first major feature addition that will be available in a free update this summer.

And yes, sorry Xequence doesn't follow tempo changes very well -- its basic design has been laid out for a fixed tempo throughout the song. That includes externally induced tempo changes.

  • Cheers for the quick response! One track at at time it is for now then...
Congratulations on a great app too. It's pretty cool that I can use this kind of set up on my iPhone while waiting to be seen in A&E during rush hour...😩 But funny the places where we finally find time to use all this amazing tech 😁

  • @no1normal thanks, much appreciated 🙂 there should be some way to get what you want by using clever Audiobus routing (outside of Xequence), maybe someone else can help?

  • Thank you so much for creating this wonderful creative space, Xequence 2.

  • I'm finding Xequence 2 and Modstep make a nice partnership, jam into Xequence midi thru to AUM with Modstep and record the jams in Xequence and arrange etc.
I hope Modstep at least gets stop/start Link though as that's one thing which would improve the combo :)

  • Just bought this v2 (already have the original) version to support this developer. I do hope that someday time signatures changes and tempo changes will be added ;)

This inspired me to try polyrhythms and tempo changes in MIDI generating apps (eg. Patterning 2, Poly - if it still works, etc.) external to X2, and see if X2 captures it all accurately. >:)

I think that's what that fabulously high PPQ resolution is for.

  • I can work that out.

I do find editing MIDI in Cubasis a bit cumbersome.

I didn’t realize Midi Thru was single destination. No problem, here’s a way to do it without MIDI Thru. In fact, you should to disable midi thru for this.

If you set it up like this, you can then take an empty project, turn on multi-track recording, and press record. X2 will add the needed tracks. You can then go to the instrument page and set the outputs to Audiobus (not Audiobus 3) and switch off the Rozeta plugins so that they are no longer sending midi.

If you want to record additional parts from Rozeta, just disable the output from the X2 channels you enabled above, and turn Rozeta back on, record, repeat above.

I hope that makes sense! It’s easier than it sounds.

I do find editing MIDI in Cubasis a bit cumbersome.

Once I realized that the handles (horizontal and vertical) were meant to be held and dragged, I've been finding editing to be pleasant - easy to transpose, shorten/lengthen notes, stretch/shrink clips, etc. You can edit an individual note, or you can select specific notes, or a specific group of notes.

If you can post some specific use cases, maybe you can get more details from us. I recall making a drum track to be a PITA in Cubasis, because I couldn't figure out a quick way to copy and paste a 2-bar drum pattern. Doing the same thing in X2 is ridiculously quick in comparison.

Could you please add some details about your setup?

With Modstep set up as it's tracks midi out to "Xequence destination" on different midi channels.
Then in Xequence with "midi thru" on, the different tracks set out to AUM tracks and instruments.

So when you sequence in Modstep it's going "thru" Xequence first and then to AUM.
Then record into Xequence when you are ready to print to the timeline. And arrange and edit the clips etc :)

I like the midi editor in X2 much better, but it will add complexity to your experience. You will have to get into some fairly complicated routing setups. I don’t know if I recommend it unless you have a serious dislike for editing in Cubasis.

You might consider the idea of Atom running inside Cubasis for an alternative midi editing experience. But even that adds complexity (though less).

I think that's what that fabulously high PPQ resolution is for.

It will capture it all accurately if the sending apps and everything in between correctly passes on the timestamps and receive the packets in advance, and "Use Incoming Timestamps" in Xequence's settings -> MIDI / Recording -> MIDI Input is enabled. Otherwise, it will be captured "good enough" most of the time :) (you can always quantize after recording).

The high PPQ is mostly there for being able to make micro-adjustments to events (or a track's "Delay" setting).

  • Thanks everyone for upgrading and for your feedback after the release! The introduction sale is now over.

Also, a final bugfix update is being pushed to Apple right now, which contains fixes for the last known issues, which should make 2.0.6 completely bug-free.

That is always the goal that we want to reach before moving on to new features -- now that this is the case, we'll slowly move on to the 2.1 release, which should provide a "Takes" system for loop recording, and possibly a few more bits.

Any questions, suggestions or issues always welcome, as usual!

    Cheers

  • Hi all

Can anyone tell me how to trigger a sample in AUM from x2? I want to trigger a one-shot sample to play every 8 bars but am stumped at the moment. Any help greatly appreciated - I fear I’m being a bit of a numpty, but that’s fine 🤗
