@bsantoro the pressure sensitive controller seems like it could be very useful for music creation. Ideally it would be nice to have touch sensitive screens so you could have more flexible 3D control which can change in response to the software you're using.
FL Studio DAW for PC is lifetime updates for free, not like Cubase.
the idea of being able to run DAWs on a surface is cool but does surface have many music apps specifically designed for tablets like the ipad does? that's what i'd miss alot, stuff like samplr and loopy and good sequencers. ableton on a tablet sounds cool in theory but i don't know how much i'd actually like using it, clicking around tiny menus and shit.
Exactly what I found out first hand when using daws on the surface. Geist is great but that's basically a drum machine not a daw.
Let's all put our heads together and get the real proper FL Studio on the ipad pro & then i'll be happy & this debate in my head will wither away.
I'm up for that...better get saving.
Or buy both and use your DAW on the surface pro to record the output of the iPad. One big advantage of the surface pro is that they give you the choice how to use it (touch, pencil or old school with mouse and keyboard just like a laptop).
Or just get a laptop :P mouse and keyboard is the best with daws hands down
I tend to find it a lot more fluid than using Ableton on a lap top as i dont have to use the track pad or a mouse, i can use my finger or the pen....which are kind of interacting with the thing you want to adjust and not an intermediary.
....ofcourse its all about personal taste i guess and some will like none, some will like one or the other.
I will be interesting to see if Ableton do offer a touch enhanced version although i personally feel it runs fine as it is.
Its simple as this.If you wanna replace your laptop, buy a surface pro and if you like touch screen optimized apps just use your ipad you allready have, because this new ipad pro aint gonna add anything new. With this new ipad pro you can wait for years before they release a daw like ableton, reason etc.
@DaveMagoo, are you using the iPad as a remote control for Ableton Live running on a desktop or laptop? Apps like Touchable, TouchOSC or Lemur?
i still kinda want to get an ipad pro because 1. i want more storage anyway and 2. i feel like the iOS quasi-DAWs like Auria Pro and Loopy Masterpiece are going to be able to make good use of the extra space. also the splitscreen view could be good.
an ipad may be less capable than a surface but the things it does it does really well. over the time i've been making music i've used both big desktop DAWs and separate iOS apps, and i've noticed that i like small, straightforward apps that do one thing and do it well more than i like a huge program that does everything but is tougher to use. i know how to use ableton (and i do use it for mixing/arrangement) but making melodies and such with it feels like such a chore to me. i wonder if using it on a touch-capable surface would change that.
i suppose you're right tho in that it will probably be some time before we actually see the capabilities of the ipad pro put to use
Generally i would agree and i thought the same but in the last year i found that creating tracks with iOS is a lot more complicated for me and i need several apps to do what i can do with one app on my notebook. I think it's just a matter of taste.
I still love playing with single synths on a touch device while a huge DAW like Logic would be a pain on an iOS device. Maybe it's a good way to hold iOS and OSX seperate. But i would still love to be able to have my iOS apps on my mac as well. I just would like a place where all my tools could come together on one device. At the moment my macbook would be that place. I even prefer now to use the integrated mac keyboard for playing my midi notes while i still have the whole screen for viewing.
I think there is no perfect way....... that would be too boring
i could be a bit biased here because i make most of a track via sampling/resampling instead of midi stuff. only thing i use midi for is sync and a controller. people who use alot of midi stuff probably have a different view.
I've seen the argument a few times that says "the iPad Pro doesn't offer anything you can't do on existing iPads". I fundamentally disagree with this!
The bigger screen will make existing instrument apps more playable, existing DAWs more usable, and a split screen more productive.
The extra processing power and RAM will enable more tracks, more concurrent processing and make the whole process just slicker and easier.
Of course there are no iPad Pro-only apps yet, it hasn't even launched yet! Give it six months and I bet there will be unique apps and unique versions of existing apps available which will make full use of the screen and processing.
Time will tell!
But how do you program those samples ? Using a track to program those samples also uses midi in most daws.
I have live on a laptop and surface pro 3, i have Touchable on ipad & iphone but have not used ipad version much but use iphone version most mainly for transport and maybe the odd clip launch/mixer adjustments.
Love the ipad version tho, i suppose when i get more material done i will start doing more live jams with touchable. They should port it to windows i think for surface.
I also have a launchkey mini which i use with the laptop and surface pro for chords, drums and general noodling.
those vids of the molten guy using ableton didn't look bad to me
Looks like we are getting a number of defectors from the iPad Pro before it is even shipped.
Allegiance should certainly be maintained with a healthy, fruitful and nurturing music production environment/platform........wherever she maybe found.
I personally look forward with a vested interest to the time when my desire for an iPad Pro becomes too much to bear compelling me to rush out in a crazed adrenaline fuelled rage selling everything of worth just to be able to hold her, marvel at her slender form and then take her to the breaking point........cramming her full of apps and running as many AU's as she can handle....Auria Pro etc...etc....
....i hope that day comes...theres nothing quite like it...
samplr
i do use korg gadget for drums so i guess that's midi maybe
Samplr also uses midi to record your performance only you can't see it.
Nothing wrong with using samples in my eyes.I work the same way and created a lot of soundbanks sampling old vinyls and movie stuff.Thumbs up for Samplr
Regardless of how much better the Pro is, if I was in the market for a new pad the price would stop me getting one at the mo - twice as much as my Air 2, and at only a few hundred less than a laptop, I'd go for a new MacBook Pro if I was flashing that amount of cash. For that money I'd expect at least twice the performance of my Air 2, USB ports, and the potential to run ports of Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter and Logic to play with. There's just not enough extra goodies on offer to justify the extra cash, for me anyway.
@monzo is the price double and Air2? Not seen a UK price yet.
More probably - my Air 2 was £475 (I think), with the Pencil and keyboard the Pro is said to be over £1000...
Well, that's not a fair comparison then. iPad Air 2 64 GB WIFI versus iPad Pro 128GB + Keyboard + Stylus. You'd have to ad a top quality keyboard case and stylus to the price of the Air. The Pro 128GB WIFI is said to be £699. You would need to spend a lot more for a new MacBook Pro.
Yes... but you get 16GB ram, more space, a much better keyboard with backlight and a very good trackpad, more slots, faster SSD, bigger screen.... etc.
Everything from apple is way overpriced these days but i still feel that my Macbook Pro is the only apple device which i bought where i get a good value from it.
I really would like to own a new iPhone 6S plus (and a 6S for the Mrs. in rose gold and maybe also an iPad Pro (128GB wifi only) plus that pencil. But it's so damn expensive that i think that i finally have to leave iOS for my next mobile devices. I mean my iPhone 5 and iPad Air still works but i would especially love a larger smartphone for couchsurfing, Mitosynth, NanoStudio etc.... means it would be enough to replace my iPhone 5 and my iPad Air and would work excellent to drive ThumbJam as midi controller.
£699 for 128gb? If that's accurate then it's a good deal, but the USP is the Pencil - without that it's just a bigger thing. Personally I'd be happy with a more reliable, small thing.
Another factor in favour of theiPad Pro (and others) against laptops is the cost of software - so much cheaper on the iPad (although that means you tend to buy more...)
Also true.... but then you get tons of free software for desktops and notebooks so you could create music without pay a buck for an app. Also you can demo nearly every tools you are interested in.
In general these 2 platforms are so different. Booth have pro and contra.
