what's your fav thing about it?

Hmmm, I was thinking about that and it is hard to say. From a 'feature sheet' point of view there isnt a single thing I can point to and say 'that is it', because it does what a lot of things do on paper... it is just in how it all comes together.

I used an Electribe MX a couple years ago but found it super clunky and just did not like the sounds... So very hissy too. I also have a Nord Lead and while it can make unique maliable sounds I simply do not have the time or patience to dig in.

Even with the factory presets on the Circuit I am finding there is so much room to explore with those eight knobs and transposing by octave. if you simply have a vibe or mood you want to nail it is like massaging it into being as opposed to cold engineering. it is cool how individual it can be and your personal taste emerges rather then the box purely dictating. At least that is how it feels to me.

Plus once I started twisting those knobs with it running through Looperator in Abelton Lite... Just... So happy.

Find myself tempted by the idea of a Circuit. Does anyone know if I'd be able to upload my UltraNova patches to it, or are we stuck with the factory presets?

Not sure about UltraNova but there is a PC/Mac editor that lets you design your own patches.

You are not "stuck" with the factory presets, you can edit the onboard patches using a third party programme on a PC / Mac, check out the Novation site for details. The synth engines are Nova based but I don't think they are compatible with any other synth patches.

There's an editor for the computer that works great, but you can't upload Ultranova patches to it.

  • Ahh right enough. Just watched the Editor video, looks like the Circuit synths are Nova based but not quite as powerful. Probably be able to set some patches manually though I guess.

best description I've heard of it so far

  • I just bought one and I'm getting a terrible static screeching sound randomly :( it even bypasses the master filter. Anyone have weird glitches or sounds bursts?!

    Sounds like an hardware fault

  • I like it too, especially that the synth has the same engine as the Novas (accessible via editor) BUT... it only has 2 tracks for synth and that's a killer for me.

  • You can make some of the bass drum sounds into bassline, that helps a little.

Yeah, sadly I'm thinking the same thing. :(

    Hey Buska,
Does this happen on every session? try some different sessions, as it might be caused by recorded automation triggering a screeching event/sound? if it persists, we have some super friendly people who can get you sorted fast.

There had been mention of creating packs of existing Nova based patches for import into circuit right at the beginning, but nothing much came out of that the fact circuit only has a subset of the Ultra/Mininova synth (or at least, one less Osc) contributes to this, but it would be good for some kind of release. The editor is great and the synth is clearly very fully featured, but it's pretty overwhelming to make patches with (or at least, compared to the Mininova)

It would also be great if whoever created the cloud based session upload would extend this to a patch library as well. If anyone's sharing them, they're certainly not doing it anywhere I've looked.

Have you updated the firmware? It did have the tendency to do this before I updated when moving sessions.

It happens across sessions, I've turned it off and updated the firmware but still same problem. It's random as to when it strikes. I'm taking it back to the store I bought it from tomorrow :(

Yeah updated the FW straight away

Yeah I think it's a hardware fault, I'm pretty familiar with hardware having owned many groove boxes over the years. The fact that it happens even when the master filter is turned all the way down points to the fact that it's a problem with the hardware. I might make a YouTube video and upload it, knowing my luck it won't do it in the shop when I take it back tomorrow :(

  • Btw when it's not doing it's weird glitch sounds I love this thing.. Very cool little box :)

  • I am so in love with this. What would be great is an app that lets you buy patches and upload them to your circuit. it doesnt even have to be an editor, just a circuit patch store. i will give the PC editor a whirl but i like it when pros make em for me.

Oh but then I guess people could just swap them using the editor and that would cut in on the action. Never mind .

So I guess having an editor app would be sweet.

  • I'm guessing the patch editing the firmware update adds is just additional sysex commands, presumably we could crack open the editor in Max for a look and remake most of the functionality in one of those iPad MIDI control surfaces apps.

(Just about persuaded myself to pick up a Circuit this weekend.)

  • I got mine last week and I love it. It pairs great with the electribe 2. Most of the electribe's knobs correspond to the circuit's macros. I send the audio from the circuit to the electribe for fx, keep them in the same scale, and I just jam for hours on end.

I do hope there will be a venue to share patches. The novation forum is not very active.

  • The Novation forum is closed, that's why :)

I agree, some way of sharing patches would be great. The Isotonik guys were asking people to send in their favorite patches, but I have no idea what the plan is. Considering you can upload new patches without affecting your current sessions, I'd happily buy update packs if they fit my musicial styles.

  • Aaaarrrggghhhh I was meant to go to bed 3 hours ago, damn you Circuit! :)

It's happening even on a new scene with no automation. I've made a video to show the store what's happening as its intermittent. Who are these people that can sort it out quickly? I'd like to talk with them if possible. The store is saying they need to send it away for testing before they can give me either a refund or replacement :( not how I planned to spend the weekend.. No circuit and out of pocket $400

  • Oops, I accidentally went and played with a Circuit in the store for about 2 hours. To add insult to injury I accidentally bought one. Dammit!

Let the unboxing commence. (After a nice hot cup of joe of course, it was cold out there..)

  • Have fun, just taking a quick pause from mine at the moment :)

Haha, I accidentally plugged it into my Tenori-On yesterday and now my apartment remains a filthy mess this morning.

  • I was meant to go to the park with the kids today, convinced them to play in the garden instead so I could play with mine.

I too would like to have the possibility of importing some decent patches. I find the factory ones a bit sort of flimsy/lightweight happy summer in the sun sort of thing.... not from the dark lush seedy gnarly underworld that I would like.

  • Initial impressions:

Well I made 8, 8 bar sessions, then I had to run out to the Gym, bah! When I got back I made another 8. Now it's after midnight and I need to stop. STOP! Of course I don't imagine I'll keep anything I did today, but I sure enjoyed just the sheer joy of creating. It really is very easy to use.

If this thing had had audio over the USB it would have been completely without fault. As it was I was able to patch it into my desktop DAW via the UltraNova. That was neat as didn't relish having to mess with my already full main audio box. The built-in speaker is functional at best, though the headphones are fine as you'd expect.

Recording into DAW it sends MIDI for synths on channel 1&2, and drums on 10. That's cool, klunky, but I can extract any neat patterns I want to expand on in-DAW. Getting multitrack audio of course requires multiple passes solo-ing each channel and then faffing about matching up on the timeline. Not ideal. But do-able I guess.

Played with the patch editor a little bit, but not much. Looks pretty neat. Very familiar looking, I reckon it can probably manage to run quite a lot of UltraNova and MiniNova patches, probably V-Station patches too. I may try transferring a few of my favourites.

Also managed to find the Beta Cloud service thingy that lets you save and load session data to sysex files. It seems to work. Not sure why this isn't part of the main Editor.

And of course, I guess it wasn't really obvious from reading the reviews, though I had an inkling when playing in the store, we can split songs up across sessions just fine so long as we're willing to press the buttons to change sessions at the right time! I can totally make a full-length song on this. (It seems to me session chaining would be a neat addition, I may suggest it)

I like the build quality, it's a solid little bugger.

    tl;dr Win!
